Radiance
« on: February 02, 2007, 04:58:24 PM »
Alright, so I decided to start up work on Radiance again. You may know that I've done very little in quite a long while, mainly due to having no ideas whatsoever and having too many deadlines and related things in "real life".

But it occured to me that it might be a good idea to get this thing going again (As well as me noticing Meis' rather flattering briefing of the game on the Wiki), so I shall. Huzzah.

The old thread was a bit cluttered and full of junk, but there's some interesting stuff in there too. If you haven't been following the game since the beginning, there may be some things there you'll find interesting.

The old thread can be found HERE.

I must admit that work will be slow, since I have stuff I need to take care of, but I will be making an effort to get something done.

Dana, the land of equality, has fallen many times before.

In the beginning, the world and its many races were created by the Ancients, the Gods presiding over Dana. They were confined to a parallel plane, sealed behind a barrier, that, if crossed, would drain their strength to the point where they could take no action.

So the Gods could only watch as their world began building itself.

They were Goliath, God of the Planet; Felza, Goddess of Life; Rin, God of Wealth; Corva, Goddess of Peace; Morta, God of War; Iefa, God of Crafting and Art; Benz, Goddess of Magicks; and Lakou, God of Music. And together, they had forged Dana, to decide its own fate.

The races began prevailing. The race of men stretched out its hands and took over much of the world. Theirs was co-existence with other races, and vast power with it.

The Demons had no such success. They were deeply religious, kind, thoughtful. But they did not have the Gods' favour. Their crops were planted in infertile land, their livestock died from pestilence, famine reigned. And all, the Demons believed, because the Gods were focused on the other races instead of them.

They had a choice. Starve into extinction, or do something about the other races. They had numbers, strength, immense magical talent. Their priests gave their approval. The Demons raised an army, which began to move, led by Anda, the Demons' matron mother.

Within a month, thousands had been slain.

The Gods watched as part of their creation began destroying the rest. They knew something had to be done, but if they crossed to the mortals' world, their strength would be gone, and it would take thousands of years to regain.

Yet in the end they had no choice. They crossed the planar barrier, halted and slaughtered the Demon race, and since she was too powerful to destroy completely, sealed Anda behind a wall of enchanted rock, upon which was painted a Mural, a warning to travelers.

And then the Gods returned to their own plane to rest, and despite the chaos that had befallen, six milennia of peace came.

One Demon had survived the carnage. He was known simply as "Harvest", and he knew that once he had gathered enough Gatsun - the dark half of a person's soul - he could become powerful enough to release his mother, and continue the legacy of the Demons.

The Gods faced a dilemma. They were unable to cross the barrier again, with their strength so low, so they had to find another way to stop Harvest. They decided to create a warrior on the mortals' plane - but creating the perfect fighter would take too much strength. And so, the Gods sought a body to act as the host for their power, and perhaps stop Harvest in his tracks.

For one such warrior, somewhere to the east, darkness comes.

Characters

Radian

Age: 22
Height: 5'10
Class: Warrior
Weapon: Axe
Bio: A young man, who knows nothing of his past. He was entrusted with a difficult task which he knows little about; a task which could affect the future of humanity. He is emotional and deep, but he can also be calm and focused when he needs to - he can accomplish any task when he puts his mind to it. His memory has faded to the point where his first name is all he knows. He is also highly trained with his Axe, although he does not know how or why.

Endair

Age: 182
Height: 6'0
Class: Archer
Weapon: Longbow
Bio: An Elven Ex-Commander, exiled for disobeying his leader's rules. He commanded a large part of the Elven Army, but when he disagreed with the Army's increasingly suicidal protocols, he took up Archery, and urged his unit to do the same. For this, he was banished. He is calm and collected, and hopes that one day he can return to the Army to apologise to his leader and regain his position.

Karen

Age: 21
Height: 5'8
Class: Medic
Weapon: Knife
Bio: An optimistic young Medic from Karika. She is hard-working, but loves to have fun. She is popular and speaks her mind whenever she can. Trained as a Medic, she followed Radian on his journey to "Make sure he was alright". However, she has deeper reasons, which stretch further than anyone can possibly know...

Karma

Age: 25
Height: 5'10
Class: Guardian
Weapon: Two-Handed Sword
Bio: The Guardian to the President of Merren's daughter. He is courteous and obedient, and will follow the orders he has been given before thinking about his own safety. However, he is strong, courageous and trustworthy with it. When the President of Merren discovered that the realm of Fenne were spending his regular donations on buying forbidden machines for its weak army, the President's daughter was kidnapped. Fearing that she would be harmed, Karma chased the fleeing airships, but was shot down by an unknown source...

Arlan

Age: 27
Height: 6'0
Class: Defender
Weapon: Zashi Blades
Bio: Arlan is an emotional young man, who has had his fair share of sadness. His father died when he was young, mauled by a monster which dwelt outside their village. His mother soon shared the same fate. Blinded by his rage, Arlan took his Zashi Blades (Knives designed to be either used to physically attack, or to throw as a Kozuka), and slew the monster. He later joined the Griza Regiment, a small privately-owned Army which had a high success rate. He was away on business when the entire army was annihilated by its enemies. Arlan is the only remaining survivor... Or so he believes...

King

Age: 34
Height: 5'11
Class: Chief
Weapon: Shortsword and Shield
Bio: King is the "fearless Chief" of the Lizardmen. He presides over the remote, tropical Lizard Isle, where he is greatly revered by Lizardman and Human alike as being the most intelligent and virtuous Lizardman ever to have existed. While he can sometimes appear withdrawn or lost in thought, he is not afraid to speak his mind, and he has proven himself on numerous occasions to be more level-headed than some of the wisest men in Dana. He accompanies Radian to prove the talent of all Lizardmen, and to represent his race in the upcoming battle.

Demo

Alright, as you may know, the old Radiance demo isn't available for download any more. However, I'm pretty sure I have it saved on my computer somewhere, so I'll try to get it uploaded again, so you can all have some Radiance to play with while you wait for me to finish Chapter I. Once the Chapter is finished I'll release it as the demo.

To-Do List

 - Finish writing up the character bios and adding their respective images.
 - Add the screenshots.
 - Get some resources which have been nagging at my progress for a while (If anyone has a decent MIDI for a large, wealthy town, it'd be much appreciated).
 - Try to get the demo up.
 - Wait for people to comment.

So, anyway, that's that. Thanks for reading.
