RPG Maker Page
« on: February 06, 2007, 12:14:04 AM »
Come on now. We're an RPG Maker website. How can the  RPG Maker article be so bland and empty?

A description of RPG Maker and several things that are common among them all would be nice - a mention of the console ones too, and then links to articles for individual versions which can detail much more - RM2k3 can detail how it is different from 2k, including battlecharas. RMXP can have a small section on Ruby leading to a larger, Ruby article. Also, each article about an RPG Maker should have a quick stat list listing the dimensions for resources, as well as their color depth and limitations and such.

A comprehensive list of code actions would be nice too, perhaps a central article with links to separate articles that describe the code action and provide an example of it's usage?

Well, I was thinking about making seperate articles for elements in RPG Maker, such as charaset, chipsets, battle animations, etc... but I was wondering if it should be done or not. I was thinking maybe instead it could all be within one article. Or maybe in that RPG Maker article. So... input, anyone?

I think separate would be better, so It's easier to find what you want, an so noobs dont start spamming up how to find a certain article.

In regards to event commands, I think one article will be fine, then we can link to tutorials for the more advanced commands (switches, variables, key input, etc). As for the different types of resources, they should each get one article, then we'll just put them into an RPG Maker Resources subcategory or something.

I can understand wanting to put them all in one article, but I just want to emphasize that making a page huge hurts the eyes and makes reading a bore - History of Charas article, for example. Mainly that made me realize that adding several pages that the user can go to at their leisure is easier for them in that they don't have to sift through the long page, and is also less daunting.

Well, there's only so much you can say about a command like, say, Proceed with Movement - it's not worth a whole page if you're only going to put 2 or 3 sentences in it.
I do see your angle, though - perhaps we'll separate the Event Commands function into three pages, representing the three pages in the program, then have links to relevant full articles and tutorials.

You can certainly do it that way - it's better, I think than before - but just so you understood more the format I was imagining (discussion about it can possibly improve it, and if not, oh well, it was worth a try, so don't feel like I'm forcing you to change. :P), I was thinking more of:

Move Left
Function
The move left command moves the target, whether it be the main character or an NPC, to the left. You can specify how many squares to move left by using the box labeled "# of Squares"
Examples and Usage
The move left command can be used in the making of a cutscene, or perhaps to make an NPC follow a certain path around town, such as having them go to their house at night, alongside a day/night system.

The move left command, after being used, should look like this in code:

See Also
Move Command
Stop Command

I made up a lot of stuff, but it's a decent enough length article. More complex commands would get more detailed examples and descriptions.

This isn't that place for this, and if you want to use them in VX, you will have to move them around.
