Island Sky

My first released full RPG Maker 2003 game, Island Sky. The game takes place in an Island, 4 students and a teacher are on vacation from school and are enjoying their day.

----Characters----

Sabrina
Age: 21
Looks: A girl with short brown hair that's in a ponytail.
Personality: She's a very calm girl. She's kinda shy too, not so much when she's around friends, but it definitely shows when around strangers. She's pretty lazy, but very smart and has a variety of talents, mostly computer related. She values her friendships, and just likes to enjoy life. Especially playing video games.
Battle focus: She's well rounded. She has a wide variety of skills, from healing, to elemental, to protection, and a fair amount of strength. Basically a Red Mage. Does double damage to Aquatic enemies.

Angela
Age: 25
Looks: A beautiful girl with long blond hair.
Personality: She's a university language teacher. Other than that, Sabrina knew Angela before and they are great friends. Angela is a very friendly person, who will really care for her friends. She can speak 4 languages, and is smart, just not in math or computers. She likes to have fun, which usually means relaxing by the beach for her. She likes to make fun of Sabrina sometimes. She's a coward, and is afraid of a lot of things, including the dark, snakes, heights.
Battle focus: Starts off very strong physically, and very strong in elemental magic. She has access to powerful elemental skills, and will get most of them before Sabrina does.

James
Age: 22
Looks: He has short brownish/reddish hair.
Personality: He's not very smart. He barely gets by his classes, and usually that involves copying peoples homeworks. Uninterestingly enough, he loves talking in an older English style, and will sometimes refer to himself as Lord MacJames rather than James. This kinda annoys people, but he doesn't care. In fact, sometimes he's embarassing to be around, but he's completely oblivious to that fact. He is a bit prone to pick fights with people, but rarely will he actually physically fight. In addition to speaking in an older English style (to try to impress people), he can also talk in a very street like manner.
Battle focus: As strong physically as Angela, but concentrates solely on physical attacks and techniques. Can do double damage versus human enemies.

William
Age: 21
Looks: He's the tallest one, and darker skinned than the rest.
Personality: He's smarter than people think he is. Since he's usually joking around and pulling pranks on people, you wouldn't know that he's pretty smart. Friend or not, he'll pick on you, trip you, tease you and call you names. He's pretty outgoing, but he'll usually end up making the other person embarass themselves, rather than him. He's able to easily get out of any tight situations. He's not completely mean, he makes a good friend if you know him well.
Battle focus: Long range fighter, and very good movement range. Rarely do you have to worry about MP with him. Not very strong, however. Does double damage to Aerial enemies.

Lisa
Age: 23
Looks: She's orange haired.
Personality: She's fairly intelligent, though not overly so. She's quite a loner, so she only really talks to or likes being around friends. She bothers Sabrina a bit, but she's not otherwise much of a talker.
Battle focus: Double damage to animal type enemies, decent range and attack power. She can boost up allies' stats as well.

----Features----

*It has a custom battle system, which is kinda in the style of tactical RPGs, but I don't think you'll be thinking very hard to beat the battles (They're very easy, so I don't consider it a tactical RPG).
*It has a media player, online bank, some minigames, stuff like that.
*The music is all custom made by me. Let me know what you think of it!

*Note: This game was actually made in RM2k back in 2002 before RM2K3 came out. Then I switched to RM2K3. I released this in 2005 because my other projects got lost in a computer crash and I only had a backup of this one.

In rar form
In zip form
It is about 17 to 20 MB zipped. It shouldn't really take too long to beat, it's not that long. I'd say a few hours, like 2-4 hours.

looks fun.  I'm hoping you weren't trying your hardest with the basic story, but it looks fun.  I'll play it. :D  I'll give a review when I finished.

EDIT: or I would play it.  can you upload it as a zip?  I can't use RARs for some reason.

Less an issue of trying, more that I didn't really want a big complex story with this. It's a light hearted game, no demons taking over the world, no need to even save the world, no empires.

And as you requested, I added a zip form to the first post. Hope you like it!

Thanks a ton! ;)

hey, that's what I like about how it looks.  its original.  I'll tell you what I thought of the game tomorrow or so.

I can't wait to see where this goes :D

EDIT: I got passed the toy city or whatever its called, and here's a few things.  the two custom systems you made didn't work, and actually I had to hack two parts (in a sense) to get passed it.  that's a major issue, because it shuts the game down unless you fix it.  the game lacked a title picture, which caused the program to shut down.  ok, I edited that up myself.  ok, both are not game killing, but still, you should try and find a way to fix that.

ok, that's all good with me, and that's pretty much the games only problems, except the glitch where you can use techniques after attacks some times, or how if you move into a wall, it counts as a move, and if you attack the wrong direction, it ends your attack turn.  ok, you just have to be careful.

the battles were fairly challenging (bosses), and the mapping was very good.  the story, if you call it that,  was nothing like I expected, but its still good.  its highly original, (I almost dropped on the floor at 12:30 AM laughing my head off when the TV said the cause of the wave was a fat man falling in the water.)

I love your use of puns and such, and the creativity put in the characters, such as Sir Loin, james (I REALLY like how he gets a spear at the ruins >:])

A review:

graphics 10:  I love how you used photographs as panamora, although the charasets are alittle bit mixed up looking.  the chipsets are awesome, and even more so awesomeness shown by how well you brought out everything.

Sound 8: the sound quality is excellent, but you don't really use much sound effects.  I love how you used the enter and back sound effects from sonic adventure (I think...).  I love how you made the music yourself, but you don't use sound effects out on the map much.

Gameplay 8: the game is very well made, and very fun.  I love how you put minigames (that's a big reason why I play many rpgs, and that's the entire reason I like the pirates game on 2k3 posted recently.)  I am amazed how well you put together a strategy game, but there are quite a few bugs. (for one, in the laser tag hall, if you shoot them multiple times fast enough, they'll start flying around like they have seizures, that or you have a little voodoo doll of them throwing it against the walls and such.

Fun 8: the game is very fun, if not somewhat frustrating at times.  the battles are entertaining, the minigames are fun, and the scenes are, well, good overall.

Story 7: not what I was expecting, but still good.  the character's personalities will occasionally take odd turns, but for the most part everything's good.  the game has an interesting surrounding theme, and is very original.  all and all, I think that this could have been done alittle better but good job.

Execution 8: the game's execution wasn't done perfect, but it was done well.  I didn't expect that it would be a strategy, so that really upped its points for me, and the basic systems are great.

rating according to above:  8.1

rating according to personal thoughts: 9.0

Keep up the good work in game making, and I really mean good work.  :D

Wow, thanks for the review!

Yeah, I have to take in the bugs and problems and stuff into consideration for my current/future projects. I'll look into what could be the problem.

I'll need to boost up my story making/telling skills, that I see. It's not my strength, but hopefully I can work on it and improve there. Glad that you enjoyed it, anyway. Thanks again!

I could always make stories for you.  just give me some characters, a world map, an era, and an optional small history summary and I'll form together a story for you.

yeah, actually that could be fun having a somewhat 'partnership', plus I'm working on a site so you could host the games there :D

EDIT: that is ofcourse, if you really want to.

I'll see. I think I'm basically set story-wise for my current project (Which is currently being worked on at a snails pace due to university and work), but it's not a full story so maybe I'll ask for help on that once I get a demo set up (Not in the near future though, sorry).

Has anyone else tried it?

I tried it, I didn't have time to play too much though. I think its a little to random. Personally, I would have liked it to be a little more structured.

But anyway, its a nice change from all the save the world games out there. Something just fun to play. I'll play the rest of it when I have time. So far its very interesting :)

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN
