Tears of the Phoenix
« on: June 13, 2007, 02:10:30 AM »
STORY:

"Out there somewhere, there is a bird of brilliant red with a golden mane and tail. This bird is said to be able to grant a wish every fifty years, as when one wish is granted, the Phoenix emits all of it's life energy to make sure the wish is as pure as intended. Doing this brings death upon the Phoenix. However, fifty years after, it is reborn once more on Phoenix Summit, aptly named for the bird of miracles that rests upon it. Anyone can make a wish, but only one with good intentions will have it come true. one with evil intent who makes a wish is instantly and painfully destroyed by a white flame. Unfortunately, this white flame is also the life force of the Phoenix, and it dies, once again entering the Resurrection cycle. When a wish is made, and the Phoenix dies, the sky turns red and rain falls. This event is thought to be the Phoenix saying a tearful good bye, and is seen worldwide. This rain is known as the Tears of the Phoenix. Once the fifty years passes, the sky is filled with warming sunlight, and this too is seen worldwide. This warmth is known as the Rebirth. It is unknown whether anyone can tame such a creature, but it is thought that no one would want to. The wishes it grants are gifts, and whomever would want to tame this creatures power and keep it trapped would surely be of a dark or nonexistent heart."

"This is it, guys. Our goal is to find the Phoenix," states Ryokotsu as he rises from his seat.

"What makes you think we can do something like that?!" shouted the older young man, Tobias, as he shook his fist. "We can hardly protect this village! Much less travel the world looking for a creature that hasn't even been reborn yet! Not to mention that Phoenix Summit is halfway around the freakin' world! Why should we go anyway?!"

"For the fun of it, Toby. To get stronger, wiser, and overall better," replied Ryokotsu in a mystified voice.

A shy voice speaks up, "Uh, um, I think it's a good idea, Tobias. I mean, I bet we all have our own wishes, but my mom said she wanted to see the rain before she goes...And you know she doesn't have long," retorts Leina.

"That's true but--!" A smack flies across the back of the yelling Tobias's head as the wisest of the four, Eon, redraws his hand. "See what you've done, oaf, you've made her cry." As he points to Leina, her eyes tearful.

Tobias rubs his head, dumbfounded, apologizing, "I'm sorry Leina. But even if we could go, The Rebirth hasn't occured yet."

Ryokotsu jumps estatically at this statement, replying, "So, if the Rebirth were to happen, Toby, you'd go?"

"Yeah"

As if on cue, the white light of the Rebirth fill the sky, seen from outside the window. The light outside brightens all but Tobias's face whom reacts negatively.

"...Well...****..."

CHARACTERS:

Ryokotsu Sincai
AGE: 23
WEAPON: Javelins
CLASS: Dragoon
SKILL SUBSET: Dragoon (Dragoon Techniques)
ABILITY: Jump
==== This ability allows Ryokotsu to jump high into the air and land two turns later with great force, damage to enemies increasing 100%. If Ryokotsu has an elemental javelin equipped, the damage increase will apply to the elements as well, dealing as much as 200% normal damage, or healing as much if the enemy is strong against the element. As well, a different animation plays if you have an elemental lance. EX: If Ryokotsu has a flame javelin, he will be engulfed in flames when he lands ====
BIO: Ryokotsu lost his grandpa and his father in the battle against the Wyverns twenty years ago. Both accomplished Dragoon, they protected the village with their lives. Since his mother died giving birth, and his only living relatives died in the fight, he's been living with his mother's best friend, Theresa Miran. He's grown up in the same house as his best friend, Leina Miran, and they've grown as close, like a brother and sister. But secretly, Leina wants more, ever since Ryokotsu rescued her. He tells her it was because he cares, and she takes this as a wrong way. But who knows, maybe in time he'll change. There are times when he seems to morph into another person, his eyes going from blue to red, and his gentle personality becoming cinical and evil.
IN BATTLE: Ryokotsu is a mid damage dealer whom uses techniques based on Dragons. As well, his jump ability can make or break a battle in terms of sheer power and avoidance of instant death attacks. Because of his hatred for Wyverns, he deals double damage to all Dragon, Drake, and Wyvern enemies.
PERSONALITY: Ryokotsu is chivalrous in every meaning of the word, without overstepping boundries. He treats most people respectfully, even when angry, and tries to find the middle ground in most conflicts so everyone is happy. As said above, when someone's life is in danger, he is known to unleash an alternate personality of sorts. This is when he becomes somewhat cynical and evil. (plays a key later in the story)
REASON TO FIND THE PHOENIX: For the fun of the adventure

Leina Miran
AGE: 21
WEAPON: Rapiers
CLASS: Priestess
SKILL SUBSET: Wht Mag (White Magic)
ABILITY: Barrier
==== Using this ability, Leina puts up a magical protective barrier around herself, boosting her defense 100% for five turns. If Leina happens to be wearing elemental armor, the elemental resistence of said element is increased. However, if the opposing element is used against Leina, she will recieve double damage ====
BIO: Leina has known Ryokotsu since she can remember, and has always hid behind him, he serving as her protective big brother of sorts. When her father died of cholera, she ran away. She was close to her father, and she didn't want to face life without him being there to support her. For three days she wandered around. When Ryokotsu found her, she was covered in dirt, her hair was messed up and her dress was torn. As Ryokotsu carried her back, she felt a warmth in her heart and has loved him since that day four years ago. Being the shy person she is, she wont admit it. She may not be the bravest, but when push comes to shove, she can keep everyone going with her abilities as a healer.
IN BATTLE: She is a healer primarily, but if needed, she is a competant fighter with her skills in fencing. Her Barrier can help her last a few more turns so she can concentrate on the healing of other characters before herself. When her MP is drained, she can hold her own with her fighting abilities.
PERSONALITY: Leina is a shy person, who always seems to be blushing and stuttering when around Ryokotsu, or as she and everyone else calls him, Ryo. She tries her best to be brave, but often chickens out, calling for the others to come to her rescue. She wants to be strong, but she can't find the motivation to put forth the needed effort.
REASON TO FIND THE PHOENIX: So her dying mother can witness the Tears of the Phoenix

Eon Sentry
AGE: 23
WEAPON: Gauntlets
CLASS: Mage
SKILL SUBSET: Blk Mag (Black Magic)
ABILITY: Focus
==== Using this ability, Eon boosts his intelligence by focusing only on his magic. During this time span of five turns, Eon's magic power is doubled, but his power is reduced to 0 (Not counting the ATK that's added from his weapon). However, during this time, all elements will, or course, heal the enemy as much as it would deal damage ====
BIO: Eon has lived with an elder couple since birth, as he was abandoned and found when an injured wolfen brought him into the village, then died. He showed a gift of magic from seven, using his first spell to save his "parents" from a feral wolfen. When he was fifteen, however, he lost control of a powerful spell, and set his house on fire, killing his adopted elderly parents and killing the nerves in his hands, making it impossible for him to hold a book or staff. When he was about to drown himself, a healer came upon him, stopping him from killing himself. Eon told the healer his story, and the healer restored the young man's hands, and gave him special gauntlets, that keep magical power in check. Eon often has a superior personality towards Tobias, but when it comes to the two of them, you'll find no better team.
IN BATTLE: Eon is a huge damage dealer, being able to decimate enemies with his powerful spells...as long as his MP hold out. He has a high enough MP, but if taught spells too early, his MP will drain from the higher level spells very quickly, and he will be useless.
PERSONALITY; SIMILAR TO: Eon's an ***hole to a lot of people, plain and simple. He sees himself superior, and as such, doesn;t give many people respect. Although this gets in the way of friends, the three in their little group have found a way to get through this tough exterior to the kind heart inside. He will do anything to get his way, especially if his way involves he and his friends staying alive.
REASON TO FIND THE PHOENIX: To master many magic spells along the way.

Tobias Wental
AGE: 27
WEAPON: Swords
CLASS: Swordsman
SKILL SUBSET: Kenpo (Sword Arts)
ABILITY: Rage
==== Using this ability, Tobias unleashes all of his anger to boost his attack by a great amount, but his defense is halved by this anger induced state. If Tobias has an elemental weapon equipped, the damage it deals is stacked, dealing four times normal damage, or healing four times the normal amount ====
BIO: Tobias, unlike the rest of the group, actually played a small part in the defense of their village. He handed out swords and spears to the villagers, but unfortunately, his aid wasn't enough to help his father. He watched as his father was brutally killed by a pair of Wyvern. He collapsed crying, and eventually snapped, killing a Wyvern that was headed for his little sister. After it fell, he continued to attack it until it was too difficult to tell it was what it once was. Since then, he studied swordsmanship from book and various passerbys, thinking of new attacks to add to his knowledge of abilities. He is not the smartest person in the world, but he's one of the bravest and most dedicated people you will ever meet in the world. He still has a lot to learn, but he's willing.
IN BATTLE: Tobias is a tank. He uses swords, swords, and more swords, and you can tell from his battle role. He deals damage with, of course, swords and sword based abilities that use little MP, which is good because he has little. When he uses his Rage ability, he can turn the tide in his and his allies favor, from allies that are weakened against a thug group and their leader to a restrengthed team against a bunch of leaderless scardey cats wanting to run.
PERSONALITY: Tobias doesn't think...At all. He wll blurt out exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time, and get himself into a mess. He gets himself out of it alright, but it wouldn't be necessary if he watched what he said. Once his mind is set on a task, he carries it out with gusto until it is done. His one track mind comes in useful for battles, just not much else.
REASON TO FIND THE PHOENIX: Along for the ride

FEATURES:

Enhanced DBS with:

- Kijutsu
-- Spirit Techniques that are similar to limit breaks. As they use their skills, they gain more and more Spirit Energy built up. When the Spirit Energy tops out, they can unleash special abilities that will come in handy on many boss fights.

- Stamina (NOT CONFIRMED)
-- Each character has an amount of stamina that can be used to strike enemies with advanced combos. EX: If Tobias has one stamina, then he can unleash a two-hit combo on the enemy. Stamina will reduce as these abilities are used.

- Ability Upgrade Quests
-- Each character will be able to complete a side-quest that will give their ability an upgrade. EX: Ryokotsu's JUMP will become SOAR.

I will be using the CHIBI Tales Of style, meaning the little tiny ones like in the GBA version. A friend of mine is readying a template for use, and I will be spriting characters myself. I plan on this game being not so much graphically driven as story driven, but I plan on some nice graphics as well.

The story sounds interesting. One question, though: Who (or what) is the villain? Your explanation doesn't really give much of a chance for an antagonist.

That's to be revealed.

I don't want to just fire everything at you at once. If people really want to know who the villain is, then more will ask, then I'll introduce them. Otherwise, all shall remain as is until you play the game.

I don't have the chance to seriously sit down and read it, but I'm a little confused. I'll read it again tommorow.

It's not that it lacks a villain, but that it lacks conflict. Never give away the main villain as the villain's emergence is usually the climax to the story.

My Tobias will be better than yours. :p

It's not as much their personality as a comparison. I'm just being lazy, but I see what you mean, I'll switch them out.

Didn't read the plot, but I read the characters.

I sound like your little mage guy.

Also, at the end of the first post, do you mean to infer that Tobias learns JUMP also? Or was that just a typo?

I guess that's more of what I was meaning to say. But, other than that, the story sounds pretty interesting.

Well, the conflict really isn't introduced until later in the game. For now, the only conflict is the adventure, because they may be good warriors in their village, but outside of it, they're newbies to combat.

EDIT:

I read the plot and I like it, it's obvious you know how to write a story. The only part I don't like:

Guy: I really wish the Rebirth happened. Like, right now.

*woosh*

Guy: OMGAWD totally did not see that coming!

I'll comment on the characters later.

I added that for humour. It was expected, as you can tell from Ryokotsu's comment. Tobias is just that oblivious.
However, why Ryokotsu knew it would happen is a secret.
