Descent into Madness
« on: September 11, 2007, 07:27:42 PM »
Okay, I have finally settled on a story and title for the game. That story puts Ragnarok chronologically game 3, so.... yeah.
Anyway, this is about game one, Descent into Madness: The Darius War.
There's not a whole lot of backstory to this one, so here goes:
The year is 103 of the First Age of history. Humans, Mularks(humans, orcs and dwarves tossed into a blender), elves, aven, and vampires all exist in a semblance of harmony. However, in reality the world is split in two: the elves and aven have formed a council of elders, while the mularks and vampires both agree that one man should lead the races. Though the groups oppose each other politically, they have never declared war on each other. Enter the Eternal Ones, a race of demigods created by Reshvorrak, the Dragon-God. They were sent to the planet in order to bring peace, however they have caused quite the opposite. Their arrival ignites the bitter rivalry between the races, leaving the humans trapped between the two warring factions, unable to pick a side. The Eternals have left the world, leaving only a spiteful rebel named Darius and his band of followers behind to fight the war. The game begins in the thirtieth year of the civil war.

Characters:
Gram Enith
(Image coming soon!!)
Bio: A human warrior that hasn't chosen a side yet in the massive war. Gram isn't really the type of guy to make fast decisions, however, so this is pretty normal. He lives alone in the small city of Dawnray.
His weapon is a two-handed sword, Dragon's Fang.

Aerik Thardrak
(Image coming soon!!)
Bio: A quarter-elf sneak thief. He fights for both sides, whoever pays the highest at any given time will have his loyalty. He wields a dagger, Deathbringer, and a shortbow, Glador's Eye.

Reshvorrak
(Image coming soon!!)
Bio: The legendary Dragon-God. He was born like any other dragon, but soon it became apparent that he was destined for far greater things. He studied high arcana until his adulthood at age 400, and then became more interested in the sciences. After 800 years of study, he became able to use magic to create life. He failed several experiments before combining humans, elves, and birds to make the aven. His greatest accomplishment was the race known as the Eternal Ones, created from vampires.

Darius
(Image coming soon!!)
Bio: One of Reshvorrak's demi-god children, Darius has never been like the rest. While his kin enjoy studying the arts, Darius prefers magic and sciences, like his creator. However, unlike the great God-Dragon, Darius found himself curious of the darker arts such as summoning. He read the Forbidden Book of Knowledge, learning to summon demons, devils, and the undead to do his bidding. Darius and a few other Eternal Ones, Baltu, Nerak, Drayn, and Faid, have remained behind on Earth. What could their motives be?

Bhaltu, Nerak, Drayn, and Faid
(Images coming soon!!)
Bio: These four are Darius's closest advisers, the only four of his kind left on the planet. So far, they seem to be benevolent, but they meet in secret in dark corners of the world. What are they after?

Here are a few feature that will DEFINITELY be in the game:
*A unique CBS that plays off Aerik and Gram's teamwork.

*Powerful summon spells that consume a small portion of your soul with each casting.

*A trap system and mini-game where timing and coordination are key to avoiding deadly traps.

That should be all. I'll have the demo soon, actually! The trap system may not show up in the demo, but it'll be up by next Friday or Saturday, at the latest.

You're going to really have to work hard to make the player understand all this history. I remember I had a similarly complicated backstory to one of my games and I just gave up because there was too much information flying around at once.

I was a bit confused at Alex, to be honest. I think the term assassin is thrown around a lot :p. He's an assassin powerful enough to defeat warlords that also possessed magic powerful enough to seal an ancient and also the qualities to reign as king 0_o

Other than that, looking good. How much have you got done?

The game's a sequel to a game my cousin made and won't share and my unfinished game, Abyss. The backstory is the story from those games.

As for Alex, he killed a weak little elf (Aruel) and Dreth, who was the only actual warlord out of the two. Dreth nearly killed Alex in Abyss, but in the end, Alex kinda... shoved him off a cliff. As for sealing the ancient, he actually just screwed up Darius' spell as he was casting it, making the portal unstable and sending Darius to the place he was trying to let stuff out of. As for reigning as king, as I said, he really only made some rules and sat around on a throne. He had his advisers rule for him.

And, had I finished Abyss before it went into the abyss itself, you'd have seen that Alex really is an assassin, he killed people for money and, in my cousin's game, killed quite a few nobles.

And I have the story written out 100% on paper, but I'm having trouble with the Redemption system. So, as of now, the first ten minutes are done, but I wanted a twenty-minute demo using the character set I want to use for Mikail.
So, no demo for a while.

Yeah, double post. Ahem.
I have made zero changes to the earlier game, but decided to start with the first game, mostly thanks to Mossetroop pointing out the trouble with using such a long history.
So... Yeah. Demo next week, images tomorrow or Thursday.
