Charas Magazine Idea List
« on: October 08, 2007, 08:26:50 PM »
-2 pages: Reference sheet for symbols in RPG Maker and other reference-worthy items
-1 page: table of contents
-1 page: Editorial
-1 page: Staff Comments
-1 Page: Unfunny comics
-1 Page: Epic Adventures
-2 Pages: Cut Out Charas Cards
-1 Page: Featured tutorial
-1 Page: Day in the Life of Charas w/ Comic intro
-2 Pages: Review
-1 Pages: Review
-6 Pages: Various articles.

Total - 20 pages

The total of 20 pages is set - they have to be even numbers and 20 seems a nice number. The ideas themselves are not. Specifically, I may change the Charas Cards to something else, as well as rework the number of pages for reviews and articles, as they fall more into the 9 pages of I don't know what to do with.

That would work if this was going to be a monthly thing. Maybe some day in the future, but right now this is just a one time thing.

How about this.

Page 1: Table of Contents
Page 2: Introduction - What is Charas?
Page 3: Staff Comments
Page 4: Article/Editorial about Charas, perhaps written by Alex?
Page 5: Featured Resource from either the Generators or CR
Page 6: Ad for a fictitious product/company
Page 7-8: How To: A couple of tutorials on simple things, and a more advanced tutorial.
Page 9: Featured RM Game
Page 10-13: Comics/art/shops from various members of Charas (including EpicA, Unfunny Comics, Day in the Life of Charas, etc)
Page 14-17: Featured writing - short stories, editorials, rants, etc.
Page 18: Something random (perhaps the cut-out Charas cards, or another fake ad)
Page 19: Outro written by Moose
Page 20: Credits

Of those, I would volunteer to do the two How To pages and would also contribute to Featured Writing, as well as any other needed articles. I'm not totally sure about pages 6 or 18, hence the fillericious suggestion of a fake ad, but it seems like a good place to start, at least.

Filling up 20 pages is hard as it is. >_< If we get enough stuff and can fill even more pages I'd be happy to slap on more pages but 20 is the goal as of now.

Warxe: Alex doesn't have the time to write up an editorial about Charas - besides, Editorials are by the editor, AKA me. :P

Originally these were going to be comic book sized pages as that was the best option Lulu had, but they've now added letter-size pages, and I'm just going to go ahead now and switch to that size.

My point being that trying to devote an entire page to a single featured resource won't work, and quite frankly, featuring single resources sounds like a bad idea to me in general - sprites are nice but not important enough to get an entire page.

Also, I'm going to go against ads, fake or otherwise. Real ads - who would we advertise and why? Fake ads - we can't make an ad funny enough to be worth it.

Warxe, what would you do a tutorial on?

My idea would be that Page 7 would have a couple of simple tutorials describing basic systems (switches, variables, branches, etc), while Page 8 would be a full-page advanced tutorial. If I were to write one right now, it would probably be an in-depth one on learning skills from items.

Taking your suggestions into consideration...

Page 4: Letter from the Editor
Page 5: Featured Member - someone of your choosing who's a good member of Charas.
OR
Page 5: Current Events - contests, mini-teams, crap like that. Basically what's happening in the next little while.
Page 6: Idea column - gives ideas for plot/character development, better maps, etc.
...
Page 18: Random what-the-hell page where we put everything in.

Better?

EDIT: I agree that 20 pages is enough.

As for advertising, how about we send round word that the first person to donate a certain amount to charas wins an ad for their game? Or they could even bid for the place. Do you think anyone would actually be interested in that?

Weird idea... CK or someone else who's around writes a bit of sheet music? I dunno.

A Day in the Life of Charas

- Newbie joins.
- Someone suggests a new feature for the forum, everyone hates it.
- Unmod becomes slightly more like /b/.

Now that make take up a whole page.

Expanding on that a bit, maybe we could get a list of all active charas members still working on rpg maker projects, and post a small bit on each one. Each could have a fancy title, a screenshot or two, and a paragraph or two. And maybe not just rpg maker projects, but other types of 'creative' projects as well.

I could write a few tutorials on stuff like coding mini-games or story ideas or whater is needed.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

Some kind of layout a bit like ONM would be nice. You could have like "games that never were", "games that sucked", "hopefuls", "cult games- ones that dont reveal much info" and stuff like that in different boxes. A scoring system would be good too, like sound, graphics, story, gameplay, innovation etc. Just my opinion.

This is the revised layout - not much more interesting but it's an okay guide - we should start actually working on stuff instead of standing around trying to decide how to do it.

Page 1: Introduction - What is Charas?
Page 2: Table of Contents
Page 3: Staff Comments
Page 4: Editorial
Page 5-7: Tutorials
Page 8-9: RM Games
Page 10-13: Comics and Art
Page 14-18: Articles
Page 19: Reader Comments
Page 20: Credits

So far ZeroKirby is the only person besides myself who has decided to work on the graphics side, so  will be talking with him about the issues on that side.

Here's a list of people I have working on the project so far, along with what, if anything, I want them to do:

Osmose: Editor-in-chief, comic, lots of stuff
Razor: Comic
Moosetroop: Comic
Warxe: Item-skill-learning tutorial
DragonBlaze: RPG Maker VX Article
ZeroKirby: Graphical matters, layout
Dragoon Del Sol: Skill level up tutorial

The only real tidbit here is that I want Warxe to start working on his tutorial. Don't worry about making it too big, but remember that some of it may have to be cut down, and screenshots/graphics illustrating things would be helpful.

That would be a neat addition.

Like a review on the most recent demos and such.

As well as comments and such from current projects in work that have got the forums attention.  Maybe giving a few spoilers in the mix.

I like "Most popular topic" and "most popular projects" ideas for pages.
