Tina of the Stars
« on: January 04, 2009, 06:52:06 AM »
For a contest hosted on another forum, where you create a game that is under an hour in length, I've decided that I want to do something I haven't really done with RPG Maker before: Making a short, kind of arcade-styled game that isn't a role playing game.

Updates (Jun. 04, 09):
I'm a bad person, I know. After about 3 months of doing anything but working on this project, I've decided to put my efforts back into completing this project, or getting back to rpg making in general. Anyway, I've got a new demo released, and I will soon upload this project to the download manager on RRR's homepage. Here are the features:
> A temporary version of Level 5 completed (Not too happy with how it looks at the moment)
> An in-game tutorial level to help you play the game.
> Unless I get a report, the game should now be stand alone, meaning that you do not need RMXP to play it.
~Ratty

Well enough with the jabber, here are the details:

Story:
Among the farthest reaches of the universe, there is a fairy-inhabited galaxy known as the Fairy Galaxy. Amongst this galaxy is a lush planet called Pix. The fairies that live there call themselves the Pixies, and they flutter about with their wings and enjoy a peaceful lifestyle. All of that is about to change.

One day, everything on planet pix seems to be like any other day, blissful and quiet. Suddenly, a dark haze envelopes the entire planet, blocking out the sun and covers the land with darkness. Several comets suddenly drop from this haze, and what comes out when they crash onto the ground? Freaks, and other hostile creatures. They attack the citizens and wreak havoc whevever they go, sending this once-peaceful world into a panic. Up in the dark sky, a cloaked figure gazes upon the mayhem and laughs. The Space Demon, Sir Grimm of Darkness, has arrived to conquer the planet.

Among the violence caused by the monsters, a small, green-haired fairy rushes to a shrine. She bows down and makes a wish to the stars, her message became a star and flew off into space. Somewhere among the Fairy Galaxy, a space ship hovers slowly, carrying a sleeping, white-haired fairy wearing pink boxing gloves and a star-symboled tank top. Suddenly, the ship sounds an alarm, awaking the fairy abruptly. The alarm has detected a wish to a Galaxy Warrior, and a planet is in deep trouble. This young warrior's name is Tinabom, and she sets her ship to warp speed to travel to the planet Pix. While this little fairy doesn't really know what she has to do yet, she has a feeling that she is about to do something big for her small size.

Cast:
I haven't really developed much of this part.

Tinabom "Tina"

Age: 130 (Equivalent to about 13 or 12 in human years)
Species: Star Fairy
Tinabom, or "Tina" as the name she goes by,  is a cheery fairy whose powers are derived from stars. She was born with the title of a Galaxy Warrior, a person who defends planets from higher entities such as demons, and spends her days traveling in her space ship. She is playful and kind-hearted, yet brash and naive. Tina is friendly to everyone, even her enemies in some cases.

Dori:

Age: 120
Species: Grass/Woodland Fairy
Dori is one of the many fairy denizens of planet Pix. While a sweetheart, she is terribly shy and doesn't like being approached by other people when she's not aware of it. She is a lonely fairy girl who wants to have a friend who will stick by her side, which is part of the reason why she  wished for a hero to save the planet. Just as the wish was finished, however, she was captured by Sir Grimm and imprisoned in his dark haze. Dori waits for someone she can call a friend to save her.

Grimm:

Age: He's been around since the beginning of life
Species: Space Demon
Bearing a wicked glare on his face, Sir Grimm finds nothing more interesting to do than to inspire fear in the hearts of people. He came from outer space to conquer the planet Pix and rid the universe of Galaxy Warriors. The main reason for this is that the fear and rage that lives inside people is what keeps him alive. Using the power to create monsters, Sir Grimm littered planet pix with hostile creatures to terrorize civilians.

Monsters:
These are the lists of monsters planned to appear in the game. Each is intended to have their own unique abilities.

Fool Ghoul:

Slow in both movement and thinking, Fool Ghoul is considered one of Grimm's worst creations. It floats gently around the area, going wherever it pleases. When Tina is powered up, it will start running away like a coward.

Bonehead:

This creature looks like a skull with glowing, yellow eyes and two legs attached to the bottom of its head. It moves just as slow as Fool Ghoul, yet it is smart enough to follow wherever Tina goes.

Marty:

Marty looks like a bat with two horns and a single eye. Because it is flying, it can pass any block. Movements can vary, though predictable.

Wheelin:

An enemy that resembles a wheel with an angry look on its face. It moves quite fast, yet only in one direction.

Bon:

Bon looks like a smiling head covered in flames. It moves a little bit faster than Fool Ghoul or Bonehead and follows the player. Once in a while, however, it will get tired and take a nap.

Targit:

Targit looks like a target symbol with a face. He exists only in the bonus level of the game. Smash away!

Perforato:

If you run out of time in a level, all remaining monsters will transform into this spiked creature. It is invinsible, and comes at you fast. To put it short: if you see this monster, you are screwed.

Game Controls:
>Arrow Keys/Joystick: Move Tina around the field.

>Action Button: Punch (Only when Tina has collected all of the stars on the field).

Gameplay concept:
 • The entire progression of this game is level-based. The goal of each level is to kill all of the monsters and move to the next.
 • Before you try to kill these monsters, however, you need to collect items called "Sparkling Stars". At this point, any monster can touch you and you will loose lives, but if you collect all the sparkling stars in the level, you will become "Powered Up", and be able to turn the tables on those beasts by punching them.
 • Once a monster is punched, they will be launched towards the direction the player is facing. Once that monster is defeated, a coin will appear, giving you points if you touch it.
 • Every level (except the bonus and the boss level) has a timer. The amount of time depends on the level. The player must collect the stars and defeat the monster before this time runs out, otherwise the remaining monsters will transform into the "Perforato" enemy and will kill you.
 • I'm planning for a total of 7 levels. One level, being the third, is a "bonus level". This level will be where the player can kill as many randomly appearing monsters as possible, to improve his/her score. That level ends when the timer reaches zero. The final level is the only boss level in the game, where you fight Sir Grimm himself.

Impresive, your sprites are very nicely drawn and you have a wonderful style. My question is: Is this game stand alone (youu don't need a copy of RMXP to play it)?

Yep. I've excluded the RTP from the project and imported everything, so when the download comes you won't need the stand alone to play it.

Yay! :) It's nice to see someone who knows to that, so even no XP users can use it. Bye the way, how big are your levels? It look's like they are pretty big from the screens. Which is a good thing, since you only have three levels plus your bonus level.

Except for the collecting of the stars, I think this looks like the original Bomberman games, especially with the level layouts.
I like it, especially your spriting and pictures of the creatures, very good job on that. Can't wait to play it.

The Fool Ghoul reminds me of someone on this site.

Yes. You are collecting stars and turning the tables on your enemies. While the concept was borrowed, the gameplay is done a little bit differently. The monsters need to be destroyed to clear the level, it has a mini-game in which you destroy as many enemies as possible, and the theme of the level changes every two stages (a grass to desert to cave/mystery world).

The standard level size I've set is 25 x 15 tiles, though some will be bigger. It varies.

Update bump:

I've got the first demo of the game put up. Check the download section and lend me your comments.

I'll also be putting up a video of the gameplay in a short while.

That's strange. When I configured the game's settings selected no RTP to be used in the project.
I guess that didn't work? Either way I'll give a link to the Runtime Package
http://tkool.jp/products/rpgxp/eng/download.html

I've also just realized that many people might not have a font I've used in the project, so here is a download link to that as well.

I'm sorry but: It's Pacman with cuter and better graphics and a bonus stage.  :*: :*: :*: Three stars, but only because it's so like Pacman. At least it gives this forum some variety from each RPG trying to outdo the ones before it. A Pacman game can be good once and a while ;D

My main goal was to make a game that used RPG Maker for more than what it was intended to, so at least I succeeded in that. :P

I myself am tired that most people in RM communities don't really try that hard to use the maker differently.

Here's the gameplay video as promised. It only has the first level since when I recorded all in the demo youtube wouldn't let me upload it.
