It's a Crack?

Yeah. So, Mastodon came out with it's fifth album, "Crack the Skye"... The fourth album in the 'elements' series [Remission (fire), Leviathan (water), Blood Mountain (earth)]...

I know we have at least a few people here on Charas who are Mastodon fans (gemini), or have at least heard of them. So... What are your thoughts on Crack the Skye?

Discuss.

Leviathan is one of the best album of all time.
BLood mountain was good.
Crack the skye is different then anything else theyve done.
Personally, I love it.
Second favorite to Leviathan.

I will be seing them live in about 3.5 weeks, at a small bar, here in Edmonton.
I was lucky enough to get the Album pre-release. Along with the Oblivion single and some stellar shirts.

Also, You have put too much emphasis on this whole "elemtents" thing. Most of the "element" is simply in the artwork.
Levithan was more focused on Moby dick then water. Blood mountain was more about an epic adventure and perilous dangers. Not so much earth, but I guess the theme fits.
Crack the Skye was aimed at aleins and ghosts. Its just that the last four albums have been more conceptual then others, progressively so

Its awesome, but i would have liked some more tracks. However, the tracks that are there are super progressive and epic. This album is WAAAY more prg then their others, and the vocals are dramatically different then they have been in the past.

I saw them a while back at the Sam Houston race park during Mayhem Fest.

Hell of a show they put on.

Oh, and you two haters are dumb. There are various reasons why (facts are actually involved, too!), but I'm far too tired to explain why just now. Perhaps someone else can explain.

I only have that habit if I actually like the music enough.

This is one of those "enough" bands.

disturbed blows.

As for Doms "I MUST AGREE"

You need to die for mentioning those three bands in the same post.

Slayers vocals are their weakpoint....they pioneered...Dont compare them to slapknut.

Metallica pioneered too. But they suck. Hetfields Vocals are lulzy in a bad way. Every word that finished off any given line, he adds an "aahhhh" or "ugh" or "eeeeeh" for no real reason.

Slayer, allthough they still pump out new stuff, is not putting out any new or innovative material....they pulled off their first blastbeats in forever with a little help from Mr Lumbardo on their last album, but Comparing them to A band like mastodon is simply apples and oranges.

Slipknot is a completly differnt genre then any of the other bands mentioned in this thread, and as such you have proved your opinion malinformed.

In fact NONE of those bands share the same genre.

Seriously, if you dislike mastodon for their vocals, just go make a point of listening to their instrumental tracks. Or buy the new album special edition, and you get a bonus disc of ALL THE TRACKS MINUS VOCALS.

This is a band I refuse to pirate. their album art is stunning. They deserve my money.
And if people with musical taste such as the naysayer above dont like it, I guess thats fine. The further this gem of awesome stays from the mainstream, the better the tightly packed small venue shows will be, and the drunker and happier I will be after a case of imported beers.

The way I see it, Mastodon has been getting progressively more... Progressive. No pun intended. It's as if with each album, their music moves down a notch in a scale towards the 'progressive' end, and away from their older stuff. But they've never been all the way to one side, so their music still maintains a balance between badass sludge riffs (a la "I Am Ahab") and interweaving progressive melodies (See: Sleeping Giant).

Of course, you still get the asshats complaining that they're getting too progressive, or too soft, or whatever.

Personally, I'd still love Mastodon either way they went, because their older, sludgy stuff kicks ***, and their newer, progressive stuff kicks ***.

In conclusion, I'm pumped about Crack the Skye, and I can't wait to get it. **** yeah.

I can only hope that they get more progressive. Their more proggy songs are my favorites, and I love prog more than anything. If I were a musical genre, I'd be progressive rock.
