For you computer geeks.
« on: June 20, 2009, 07:54:02 AM »
I have a dream of building an UMPC (Ultra-Mobile PC) capable of playing full, high-end PC games, at decent, if not high quality settings. Emphasis on the word "dream", because even if it was possible, I can't pull money out of my arse.

To further fuel my interest in such an item, I began researching small form-factor hardware. I came across the Nvidia ION platform. It's a Pico-ITX form-factor motherboard with built-in Nvidia graphics, sporting an Intel Atom Dual-Core 330 CPU. For those of you who don't know what the hell any of that means, it's a fully functioning computer, slightly larger than a playing card. Just pop on a hard drive, and you have a computer. It's got all kinds of goodies on both the Nvidia and Intel ends of the spectrum. The Nvidia GPU supports 1080p HD video, DirectX 10, PhysX (among other things), and the Intel Atom 330 is a Hyperthreaded Dual-Core processor. Considering the size of the platform, that's fucking incredible.

Perfect for a high-powered UMPC.

Just slap on a Toshiba 250GB 1.8" hard drive, add any ol' UMPC-sized battery capable of supporting the fairly low power consumption of the system, and the only thing you're missing are the peripherals. Keyboard, monitor, etc. Since the idea really is to have high-end gaming in your pocket, I'm thinking slightly-larger-than-PSP sized stuff.

Another thing I looked into was OnLive. OnLive is, in very simple terms, a gaming service that allows you to play high-end PC games at high-quality settings without demanding much from your system. It does this by bouncing information between you and their servers, so that your computer is only rendering a real time, compressed video. You're essentially playing a video. There's other advantages to this, such as not really having to download or install anything other than the software for OnLive itself. Now, there's already video proof of the ION platform playing COD4 on a fairly large monitor, in full screen, and that means at a fairly large resolution. With this, one can assume that it would be all too easy for the ION platform to run high-end games with high quality settings turned on, through OnLive, on a UMPC-sized monitor.

With the research I have done, I feel that I can safely say... "Yes, a pocket-sized UMPC capable of playing high-end PC games is possible."

And now, I leave you with some MSPaint concept diagram goodness.

EDIT: Updated diagram. Forgot triggers. Silly me.

It looks like the PSP Go.
Except it's a fully functioning computer. And it doesn't fail.

I'm not sure what you mean here... Did you read through the whole thing? I can assure you no pocket-sized device has been released to the public with the kind of power I'm talking about here.

Mostly due to the fact that the NVidia ION system hasn't been released at all yet, in a product or otherwise.

There's no need for such a system and it looks like one of those PDA or whatchemaycallthems. Honestly, it's a useless idea.

i like it i think you can make it so you wind it up for power it powers the battery
so you don't need electric if you moving in a car or moving around the world a lot with it this may save you not having to look for the electric to power it all the time
if you give it two battery's so you have one on stand by you can but a level in it so you know when your battery's is getting low then all you do is wind it up you can but a memory chip on it that lets you play the game when you last playing it like a save mode so you don't have to play the game over and over to get to the level you was at when you lasts played the game all you have to do it look for the last time you played your game in the save mode if you know what i am saying  some think you need to know is you have to have to post your self a letter with the date you had the dream of building an UMPC  and one to a lawyer you know of
as i can make this tonight in a work shop and you can not do any think as
i can make a blueprint that needs lawyers to say its my invasion and not you's
and make money out of you for this invasion but as i was saying i can put some of my invasion's to it  you need to find some one that knows of how to make a blueprint
then go to a work shop make only one then go to a PC shop let them see it working
get inform what they think it needs we call this feedback
like a games card like the iPhone SIM Card Removal but with one or two games on it  see if i had time and the money to put in to this any one can make one all ways look in to thinks First before you say what your dream is all i am say as some a.s.s hole can nick it of you and make lots of money

So what happens if you want to play a game on this Sham-wow/slap-chop/blackberry-minus-qwerty-layout High end system that uses something more then like, w,s,a,d and the mouse. For instance...like Wow. Or like, AoC....or like.....one of the many games out there that uses more then just a mouse?

Nah, i think the whole thing is convoluted. Just my opinion though.

Good luck. Ill post again in a couple of weeks.

Of course there's not a need for it. Anyway, to each his own.

I think it'd be pretty neat.

Yeah, it looks cool and all, but I'd rather stick to cheap and effective. Plus, I game better while not moving. **** you, Guitar Hero: On-Tour!

[...] it looks cool [...]
I know, right?

Quote splicing aside...
The ION system itself, which is the GPU/CPU combo at the center of this idea, is actually relatively cheap. $190, I believe. And it's effective enough to play CoD4 well, at a high resolution. Bearing in mind this system will be playing games on a smaller screen, it should be pretty effective.

It's the other components that would significantly add to the price. :\

And yes, Guitar Hero: On-Tour fails.
