Desolated - RP

"Hello?! Hello?! Anyone?!"

There should be someone out there, right? This place is huge, I can't be the only one. Just what the hell happened? What happened to this city? Those were the thoughts running through my mind. I just did not want to think I would be the only person in this place, I just could not be.

"Hello?! Anyone?! Please?!"

For an hour long I've tried screaming, shouting. For anything, anyone. Just to hear a voice, to see a face. For someone to explain what has happened or where I am. Nothing. Sadly, that was also how my stomach felt. Like it was drained; empty. I could not remember how long it has been since I last ate. I remember being at a convention for my new book, talking in front of a crowd. How long has this been? Is this the same city? If so, what happened in that short time I lost? But what if I lost more than a short time? As soon as that thought hit me, I checked my pockets. My phone should be in there, like always. I never left home without it, not that I got hundreds of calls a day, but because it was my personal watch. Empty, that's what they were. Nothing was in my pockets. My gum? Gone. My pen? Gone. My notebook? My phone? My wallet? Gone. I immediately checked my clothes, but these were the clothes I was wearing a few hours ago. Was I in my car before? I always emptied my pockets before driving, could that be where my stuff is? A quick scan of the surrounding let to another confusion, it wasn't there.

A quick painful stab in my stomach made my priorities clear, though. The car and my stuff could wait, I needed food first. I remember being at some park before I left out to scavenge for something edible. It looked huge, and I do mean HUGE. It went on as far as my eyes could see. Maybe it was a forest? I don't know. This city has really high and tall buildings, why would there be a forest that big so close to what seems like a metropolis? It didn't look like an ordinary park, didn't look man-made. I don't know. I did know that my changes of getting something to eat lied in the opposite direction, a large wide street. Strangely enough, there were no bars, terraces, restaurants, stores where I was at. Maybe further along the street? It did not look like the town I was in just several hours ago, I would've remembered the huge forest. It could wait. My thoughts could wait. I needed food, bad. I remember seeing the sign, "67th Street", if I remember correctly. Looked like it goes on forever, so there must be a store or some place with food.

It was strange - I knew I wanted to get away, but this wasn't what I had in mind. I... I remembered wanting out. And I did leave. It wasn't a hard thing to do. I just walked out the front door. I was on my way somewhere... I can't remember where, but I definitely had a destination. I was going somewhere. But anything from having left my yard to up to just a few minutes ago; it's just not there. Not registering. My mind's blank.

Looking around, I feel like I've seen a place very similar to this before. It looks like a regular piece of suburbia - houses, buildings, trees. But something's missing. Something vital to humanity. Out of place. Why can't I figure it out? It shouldn't be hard to figure out, should it?

There were no stores in this street. I passed a total of forty buildings on each side. Yet not single restaurant, kiosk or even book store. No food, no information. I felt so unlucky until I saw it, an open door. Leading up to a huge, probably twenty-five or thirty story high building. It was the same building as all the others. All connected like it's some huge street of apartments, yet no living creature who inhabits any of them. All the previous doors were locked, leaving me in doubt. Should I enter this building? What if something IS in it. This place is so deserted, something bad must have happened. What am I talking about? I'm afraid of what? There has been nothing in this street so far, there probably is nothing inside. No, I'm certain nothing is inside. Nothing except food and information.

I had been walking aimlessly for what seemed like hours, but after a while in a place like this, time becomes so irrelevant, you can't even feel it passing. It was rather refreshing, really, the peace and quiet of this barren metropolis. It reminded me of how I had always wanted to live in the country, with lots of land. If I were to die here, wherever this was, it would be better than dying on Earth. But I intended on surviving anyway, and the primary necessity for survival is food.

I'm not the most optimistic person, so the chances of finding food in a place like this seem pretty slim. Nevertheless, I searched. Rounding a corner, I happened upon a sign... "67th Street," I read aloud. The sound of my voice resonated through the street... As if I wasn't lonely enough, now I have the pleasure of hearing everything I say echoed back at me.

Those first steps, they were so difficult. Trembling, my hands, my legs, but I had to go inside. There must be food inside. Only a slight corner of the door was open, but open enough to just take a peek inside. Like a thought, an apartment complex. I see a staircase, an elevator. Two doors on each side of the hall, looks like they're shut tight. Swallowing my fears, I slowly open the door further. There's nothing, I knew it. Of course there was nothing there, the place looked deserted. Well, it was deserted. Yet, I was still being careful. Listening for any sound, watching for any movement. Nothing happened. No creak; no growl; no scratch; no footsteps. I decided to take the elevator, pressed the button, but nothing came. Figures, if a place is this deserted it won't have a working elevator. Why would I use it, anyway? I'm not that lazy.

Heading up the stairs, I still listen for anything that could mean I'm not alone. For a second I thought I heard a faint echo in the distance, but it was probably the wind. I shouted for hours, there was no single person in this area. Having reached the first floor, I see three doors. One on my right, one on my front, one on my left.

"Yes!" I softly whispered, perhaps louder than I would have wanted. The door on the left was open. I could see inside. There was a desk, but it has some weird device on it. It doesn't look dangerous nor active, it's probably just as dead as the elevator. There was a pile on the ground; jackets; some shoes; a glove. The carpet was dirty, but the dirt didn't look fresh. Like it's been there for decades, dried up something, I couldn't tell what the stains were made off. I didn't care.

I took another glance at the sign, and turned to face the street. This had to be one of the longest streets I had ever seen. Hands burrowed comfortably in my pockets, I began to make my way through the lengthy stretch. I took my time, inspecting every facility to the left and right with precision as I passed. I started whistling a segment of a song I had stuck in my head, out of habit. A mile later, with no trace of sustenance or objects of interest, I propped my back against a nondescript, empty building and slumped into an uncomfortable sitting position. The 'thump' of my bottom making contact with the ground echoed, reasserting the emptiness.

There was one building I could try. It was tall, towering over the rest of the buildings on the street. You knever know if you don't try it. If anything, I could use it as shelter if I had to go a night in this place without food. Is there even such thing as night here? Who knows.

"Hup," I let out a quick breath as I brought myself to my feet. I set off towards the building.

When I first woke, I thought that something had hit my head.

I laid there, feeling the world flood back; and with it all the feelings that sleep had been protecting me from. A ravenous hunger, right to the bottom of my gut, paralysed me the moment I tried to move. A  terrible stiffness in my back told me that I'd been passed out a while.

I remembered back to the day, years ago, when an entire bookcase fell on top of me- I'm still not sure how it happened. I'd awoken then, worried faces above me and the thick scratchy library carpet below, the grooves pushing into my face. I imagined I was there now, amongst friends, but the concrete below me had something cruel about it and the slow breeze told me I was far from home.

I lifted my head with some effort and realised to my surprise that I was in a building. Initially confused about the air current on my face, I eventually craned my acheing neck up far enough to see a window of broken glass and stripping paint nearby. I rolled over and sat up. The concrete floor made up the landing above and below a set of stairs twisting up the building, and suddenly reminded me of the inside of a car park, or a horrid public toilet, grimy from neglect. For the first time I properly wondered why I was there. I had certainly never come there before.

A movement in the building below echoed up the staircase towards me. Footsteps? I wasn't sure.

It was only one floor up, but there it was. The open door. I slowly walked towards it, step by step. The doors in the hallway were closed, one on the left and one in front of me. No sign of living beings here, that's a relieve. I think it is, but I'm not sure. I'd rather meet them out in the streets, at least I can see them coming without giving me a heart attack.

I decided to open the door in front of me, thinking that's the best bet for the kitchen. Step by step, I walked towards another door. My heartbeat was beating like crazy. Of course it was, what if something was behind that door. Grabbing a hold on the door knob, I felt my hands getting sweaty. A big breath in, a big one out. I turned the knob and pushed open the door, just a small bit, to take a peek. The kitchen! Yes! I pushed it open further, to check if something was here. Nothing! Hell yes! It's safe. Stepping inside, I immediately started searching for the fridge. Where is it? Left? No. In front? No. Right? No. Where the hell is it? Must be here, right? I checked all the corners, but there was no fridge. That's when I noticed it, a long rectangle shaped device on the wall. I walked up to it, pressed a button on the right, voíla. It opened.

This is a fridge? I thought, looking at the weird device in front of me. It indeed was a fridge. I have never seen or heard about anything like this. Taking my thoughts aside, I checked everything. Empty bottles, ****. Slices of meat, yes. There are slices of meat in the fridge. It still looks fresh? How weird. This place looks like it has been deserted for years. I grabbed the package of meat and checked the cabinets for something to drink. Luckily, I found a big bottle of water. Opening the package, I first smelled the meat. Inspected it. I must be absolutely certain it's still good, worst thing is to get sick now. It smelled great, absolutely fantastic. The smell was strong, it quickly filled the entire room. I ate a slice. Delicious. I grabbed the water bottle and opened it. Smells good too. Taking a sip, I suddenly felt something wrong.

Well, I don't mean I felt something physically, but my mind said something was off. I stopped with every movement and noise and listened. A crack upstairs, looked like nothing. Whistling? No, it can't be. The wind is playing tricks with my mind again. I stepped out of the kitchen and faced the second door. This one probably goes to the living room and rooms alike. That's when I heard it. Scratching on the ground, scratching on the door. There was something in this room. I put my ear against the door, but I couldn't hear anything specific. Taking a few steps towards the exit, I kept looking at the door. Looking at it without a thought of what's behind me.

All of a sudden, a claw spiked through the door, ripping up a big hole. ****! I thought. I got to get out of here. I took a step backwards, I wish I hadn't. I bumped into something. I bloody bumped into something! What if it's the same like in that room. Without look at it, I quickly ran towards to the stairs, taking a leap down it. Loosing grip on my landing, I fell to the front with a loud bump. ****, I've done it now. I heard a loud shriek from upstairs, not to far up. It must be from what I bumped into and from what is in the room.

Quickly recovering myself, I ran outside as fast as I could, took a right back into the 67th Street and started running with no second thought.

OOC: Sorry for the long post, just wanted to cover a lot.

Also, MT11, I never made it a rule to type in first-person =P Only started it because it works better for me, but everyone should feel free to type how they type best.

I was flat on my back. A cold hard surface underneath me. Tarmac? Concrete? Something like that... I opened my eyes and swore. I had the closest thing I've ever had to a migraine and the only thing I could see was a massive black gash in the sky. I swore again when I realized that it was actually a large scratch in my glasses. I pulled myself up and then immediately doubled up from the pain in my stomach. I needed some food. The sky was overcast and heavy grey clouds dominated the horizon. Was I still in Britain? I stumbled down the street and spotted a sign.
'69th Street... America!? What the HELL am I doing in America?
My pockets were empty. I would've sworn again but it was getting kinda repetitive. I stumbled. My shout echoed at least sixteen times... This place must've been quieter than a cemetery! After my cry stopped ringing in my ears I thought I heard whistling. Perhaps the whistler knew what was going on? I shouted as loud as I could:
'HEY!! WHO'S THERE? ANYONE? WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?
By this time, my anger was overriding my curiosity.
'I WANT ANSWERS!!!!!'
My empty stomach returned with a vengeance and I decided to keep looking for something to eat.

Amy made her way downstairs slowly, feeling the rough sides of the stairwell, knowing that she could hold herself up if for any reason her legs failed. Hunger was her strongest emotion now, overriding all of her aches and pains, and also any fear of what might be ahead- She had convinced herself that the noise she had heard had indeed been footsteps, and reasoned that the person who had made them would be her ticket to finding out where she was, and what to do next. They might have food and water, as well.

Suddenly, as if conjured by her thoughts, a delicious smell wafted through the air. Meat, from somewhere near the bottom of the stairs. She could hear noises now, too, which were almost certainly human in origin, and hurried onwards, forgetting tiredness for the moment in her sudden overwhelming desire for human contact. This was no place to be lost alone. Covering the last few steps quickly but quietly, she breezed into the kitchen and was met by a sight she would never forget.

A middle aged man was in the middle of the room, with his back to her, so close that she could have reached out and touched him; and past him, on the other side of the room, a wooden door was splintering, being ripped asunder by the attentions of some clawed thing that Amy could only have dreamt about. She went to scream but found her throat too dry; and at that moment, the terrified man took a hurried step backwards and collided with her. She fell, throwing an arm downwards to protect herself, and the man, clearly too frightened to even look at what he'd bumped into, ran off in the direction of the door. Amy scrambled to her feet and ran backwards, then turned and went back up the stairs. She heard the door's last attempts to barr the creature's passage and then a blood curdling shreik from the kitchen which announced it's freedom. The information flashed through Amy's mind in an instant and then she kept running. It would either follow her or the man, she knew. She hoped to god it would be the former.

I stumbled on for what seemed like hours until, finally, I fell into a slump by a road sign. Something crashed in the distance. I suddenly realized that my sleeveless hoodie was not really the warmest piece of clothing in the world. I scrambled to my feet as a scream ripped across the ruins. I wasn't alone! I sprinted towards the noises, doing my best to ignore the pangs of hunger stabbing at my side.
