The Pomelo
« on: December 05, 2009, 11:44:30 PM »
Hello there,  Fellows. As you all remembered, I am a man who eats, grows and observes freaky fruits. Yesterday, I was at Kroger when I spotted a pretty big Citrus fruit. Now I remembered this fruit from it being mentioned in an episode of Good Eats (Orange Aid) and is considered one of the ancestors of all citrus. The other being the mandarin and the citron (also known as Bhudda's Hand). Now I picked it up, but I have yet to eat it. But from what I hear, it isn't bitter and is rather sweet. Now before I dig into it, I need to know what plans I'll have for it. I do plan on making candy from it's peels, but I could also make a marmalade from it. I have images below of this oddball fruit. One will show how big that can get... they can get to be 25 pounds!

If you thought my Squmpkin was a terror, wait until you see what I can breed out of this thing!

So, any of you had one?

It's sweet, it's citrus, it's huge, and it's pink inside? I gotta get in on this stuff.

The internal color depends. They range from white to pink to blood red on the inside. It is said that the red flesh is the sweetest

The bitters from the peel dont have a distinct flavour....its not like "WOAH, THAT TASTES LIKE POMELO"...not even citrusy...just very very sweet.

The flesh of the peel is quite thick. The pulp inside is very sweet.
This is a good fruit to use for braising meat with.

I've tried some weird fruit in my day, but no pomelo. I'll have to put that on my to-do list.

Since we're talking about crazy fruit, I wanted to see if anyone's had durian.

It's a giant spiky-*** football of a fruit that grows high up in the trees of Indonesia. When ripe, it drops off the trees with no warning, possibly killing anyone below. That's right, this fruit has claimed lives. It also smells like rotting death and is banned in many airports and hotels across the world. But supposedly if you can get past the stench, it tastes like rich custard.

At a nearby Asian supermarket, they were selling durian in an airtight container...but I haven't gotten the courage to try it.

Valiere, I heard of the Durian... but I had no idea it KILLED people by dropping on their heads. That's insane! I guess if anyone grows one, they need to wear helmets.

Gemini, my sister cut the fruit today and it wasn't rip yet. Since it wasn't ripe, it was rather citrusy and not so sweet. I'll have to buy another. Though from what I've heard, it varies on the type of Pomelo and the color of the flesh as to how citrusy it'll be.

Durian... they have 'em at the Japanese market up the street.

My mother won't let one in the house.  Or even near it.

Durian fruit is awesome.

Star fruit, dragon fruit, and anything lychee is generally rad too.

I get to cook with all sorts of exotic produce. Lately ive been working with a lot of ancient strains of carrots and beets. The restaraunt I work at
deals with "all natural organic" produce whenever possible. Its awesome, because I get to research the specials Im going to run, and play with them.

Biggest disappointment ever: Dragon fruit!

It looks and feels amazing. I'd wanted to eat one for years. It just looked like the
most perfect, kiwi-like fruit imaginible.

Awful. Tastes of nothing whatsoever.

Never heard of it. They would be cool to grow. I've always wondered if Yabloko Malokos from MGS3 are real... they're supposed to have a star shape in the middle if you cut it lengthwise.
