NCAA Football Tactics 2005... yeah, welcome to my world
« on: July 18, 2004, 09:14:48 PM »
Introducing NCAA Football Tactics 2005.  Two things about this game that's unique.

1. It's a sports game

2. It's a Tactical RPG

Not much to say yet, but it should include at least 25 teams with their own stats, a 2-player mode, Home-field advantage, and a season mode.  Yeah, I told you you wouldn't care.

Here are the 25 confirmed teams (based on Athlon Sports' preseason top 25)

1. Southern California Trojans
2. Oklahoma Sooners
3. Georgia Bulldogs
4. Miami Hurricanes
5. West Virginia Mountaineers
6. Texas Longhorns
7. Michigan Wolverines
8. Louisiana State Tigers
9. Florida State Seminoles
10. Ohio State Buckeyes
11. Missouri Tigers
12. Kansas State Wildcats
13. Clemson Tigers
14. California Golden Bears
15. Florida Gators
16. Utah Utes
17. Iowa Hawkeyes
18. Tennessee Volunteers
19. Auburn Tigers
20. Maryland Terrapins
21. Wisconsin Badgers
22. Oregan State Beavers
23. Nebraska Cornhuskers
24. Minnesota Golden Gophers
25. Virginia Cavaliers

Well, like I said, probably nobody will care, but if you do, post comments and stuff here.

I like sport games, I just don't think that rm2k3 is the best way to make one. It would basically be the same as one of the good football games such as madden 2004, exept it will have crappy gfx. If you're gonna build some sort of tactical system, I suggest making an rpg where you can put it in and not a football game.

By football you mean football right? And not soccer?

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

Yes, I mean football.  The reason I made the tactical game I was experimenting with a football themed game is because I wanted to make it less like a regular old tactical RPG (see FF Tactics or  FF Tactics Advance or advance wars or something) is simply I wanted to make it different from all other tactical games.  I also didn't want to make it so that if your guys have really good stats, you could just line 'em up and knock your opponent silly, I wanted to make another way to win, so I threw on the AMERICAN football rules.  The game will use all sorts of math to decide what happens during a play, instead of
(ATK/DEF round up) *1.5 + rand. # between -5 and 10 = damage
Everything will come into play from speed to blocking, catching, distance, whatever.

Allen personally doesn't like sports games all too much, though I have played some before. The thing is, tactical games tend to be among my favorites, henceforth, this project is rather appealing to me.

It seems to be a very interesting take on the whole tactical field of games.

Somewhat of a question (may be a dumb one); When a person has possesion of the football and gets tackled or whatnot, would a portion of his defense be knocked down according to the attack of the one whom hit him? Then assuming they're still up, that their defense would remain the same, or perhaps recover slowly or something...
I dunno really, just throwing stuff out there. Kinda curious how it'll work.

I'll look forward for updates on this to see how it turns out.

*looks up at first post of topic*..hey, Minnesota. Allen's liking that, as long as they're not as bad as the Vikings.. -_-

Chapter 1: Is your team any good?

First I'd like to say that if your team is listed, then they're pretty darn good, first they are in the elite league (Div. 1-A) of the NCAA.  (that's National Collegiate Athletic Association, AKA kids that are in college that play sports to represent their school)  Second of all, there are 117 teams in Div. 1-A so if your team is listed, they are thought to be better than atleast... 363 collegiate teams.  So... yeah, your guys are pretty darn good, but you won't neccesarily be able to whoop butt if your team is listed, as the top 25 are currently the only teams on the list.  Not even EA Sports has been able to put all 388 teams in their game.

                     Chapter 2: Football basics

Okay, here's the core of the game, and if you don't know football, I'll try to explain it best I can.

Each team can have 11 players on the field at once, and there are 3 different squads that you play with:

[GLOW]Offense:[/GLOW] The squad that is trying to score by reaching the opponents endzone, there is an endzone at each end of the field, and the field is 100 yards in length.  Before a play, they will choose the play they want to use.  In the college game, there are 3 basic types of plays.

1. Pass: the QB throws the ball into the air hoping one of his receivers will catch it, if they do, the player who catches it can run with the ball, and can continue running until he is tackled by the other team.  (in the NCAA, you are considered tackled if a knee or higher body part, besides your hand is touching the ground or if you have one foot out of bounds) If the other team catches it, it is their ball, and they are free to run with it until they get tackled.  And finnally if the ball hits the ground before anyone catches it, the ball is spotted where the play had started.

2. Run: the QB can run with the ball and can continue running until he is tackled, he can also give the ball to someone else so they can run with it.  If the ball is dropped, this is a fumble, and anyone can pick it up and run with it.

3. Option: This is a play pretty much exclusive to the NCAA, and can sometimes feel like a make it up as you go along play.  Options usually start out as run plays, and can sometimes develop into a pass.  In a general option the QB can either hand off to his FB or fake the hand off.  If he fakes it he will run to the outside, and do one of 3 things:

1: cut inside and run up field
2: lateral to the HB so he can run up field
3: drop back and throw to any WRs or TEs

In the game, during a play, the Offense will move their men (all of them) first.  One minor setback is that on the first move of the play, the QB can not pass.  This gives the Defense a chance to move their men to cover the receivers.
____________________________________________________

[GLOW]Midplay:[/GLOW] In between turns of every play the linemen of both teams will do their trench fight.  The Offensive Linemen, or the guys protecting the QB from the Defensive Lineman have a stat called block, and it can be a number from 9-20, the higher the better.  The Defensive Linemen, or the guys trying to rip the Qbs head off (here's a prime example of the QB after they rip his head off  :blue-eye: )  have a rating called D-moves and it is a number from 1-8.  D-moves divided by block = the odds of the Defensive Lineman getting through the Offensive Lineman.  After they break through, the defensive player is free to move them in for the kill!!!  Maybe I should take it easy.
____________________________________________________

[GLOW]Defense:[/GLOW] These guys try to prevent the offense from scoring, they can also change the ball control to their team by taking the ball from the offense.  These guys move all their men second.  This simulates the defences ability to 'read' the offences play.  Before a play, they choose a formation to stop the offense with.  The defence can also score by turning the ball over and scoring a TD, or tackling the offense in their own endzone.

____________________________________________________

Special Teams is still 'under construction' I'm trying to figure out how to work this in the game.

More to come soon!

P.S. I would also like it if someone could give me tips on programming A.I..   After all, none of have friends to play with in 2 player mode right?  Yeah, that's what I thought. :smoke:
