Title: Bout! - Formerly Circus
Post by: X_marks_the_ed on December 11, 2008, 11:13:36 PM
After months of trying to get Fighter Maker to work with me, I no longer wished to pursue the Circus Project. For that do not know about the Circus project, you can find the information here (http://www.charas-project.net/forum/index.php?topic=22242.0http://www.charas-project.net/forum/index.php?topic=22242.0), but much of it is now obsolete. I have restarted the project on Game Maker, as I had successfully programmed a "working" CPU script out of boredom, referring to sprites and actions which did not exist at the time.

For about three weeks, I have been programming an engine to run the project on. I have uploaded a BETA of the engine with two characters, one level, and really shitty menus. I have constructed a log for development of the engine (which hasn't been updated in a while, it will be after this), and you can find it here. (http://charasbout.tk) On it, I plan to announce any ideas that will be put into the game.

You can find the beta for testing here. (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IIJB3UKC)

Please note the following:
-I am and will be accepting new characters, whether they be a member or a member's own creation up until the final release! The more the merrier! Just keep your submissions down to three. I will not add anyone to the roster if the creator cannot supply a decent spritesheet with at least two attacks.
-NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU NANU

Controls:
A - Attack 1
D - Attack 2
E - Attack 3
S - Shield/duck (it has been found that Lucas' duck does not work.)
Left/Right - Run
Shift+Left/Right - Dash
Up - Jump (up to three times)

Bugs already found:
-You can attack in the middle of an attack.
-The enemy is known to fly in the wrong direction.
-Lucas' shield/duck does not work.
-The beta does not work on Windows Vista, apparently.
-Lucas only faces the Prpl if he is under your control.
-Prpl is Jesus (he can walk on air)
-Using E a couple of times can keep Pleasent in the air.
THAT'S WHY WE DO THESE TESTS :D

Use this thread to suggest, submit, and report bugs you find in the beta. Oh, and Merry 14-day-early Christmas. I would like to thank Hell Angel for making the level music.

------

I'm tired of responding to this:

Yes. The current beta does not work on Vista. I have upgraded to Game Maker 7 since then, which should fix the problem. The next beta will hopefully work on Windows Vista.

I make sure all characters maintain a reasonable size. His sprite will be resized accordingly beforehand.

Lilsniffs, I'll add you to the roster in a few minutes.

Awesome.

But you both do realise you won't actually be added to the roster until you can supply a spritesheet, don't you? Last time, members could reserve spots, but then weren't motivated to actually make the sheets, making it difficult when I went to actually work on the characters.

I'm not saying you can't join, this just means that I won't start programming you or mentioning you in the log until I have something to work with.

On another note: Log (http://charasbout.tk/) has just been updated!

Yes, I do know it. I didn't asked for reserving a spot, just said that I'll try to make the sprites, then ask to join. ^^

Unfortunately, a grunt of the rebellion. But it's just the story, plays no real role in the battles.

Well, I've been working on my sprite sheet. I'm done with jump and dash, so that leaves Attack 2 and 3.

And possibly 4 if I'm up to doing it. --- Disregard that, I didn't read that you can only have 3 attacks. Less work for me! :3

EDIT: By the way, is the download link for the beta in the first post up-to-date? If not, can I/we has current beta? kthx.

EDIT 2: Okay, I am 100% done with my spritesheet.

Here you are, sir:

Title: Re: Bout! - Formerly Circus

you can only have 3 attacks.

Not true. Players may have as many attacks as they like, but three will be chosen for the basic commands (E, D, and A.) The rest will become key combos.

Due to questions regarding sheets, Here some info on what I require:

I require only a few moves for the sheet. You do not have to finish the sheet to submit it, but I must have something to build off of if you vanish for some reason before the sheet is finished.

The moves Bout! will use are:
-Idle (Standing)
-Walking
-Running
-3 attacks, one should be used as a third jump.
-A basic jump
-A secondary jump (jump after another jump - optional)
-and a shield.

To preserve a spot, a sheet requires only an idle and walking/running poses. But the rest of the sheet must be finished before the final release, or I may make the attacks myself.

You may have any amount of attacks, but three will be chosen for basic commands, the rest will require a key combo to use in-game. (Such as R-R-Y to use a move called "Ironfist")

I don't think that'll be needed. I upgraded the project to GM 7, apparently upgrading to GM7 should do the trick.

Zeek and Warxe will be added to the roster in the next few minutes. However, to appear in the roster in the sig, I'll need a 44x44 size face image.

I missed this. There is only one beta at the moment. That is the Vista hater, unfortunately, but the second beta is nearing completion. I just have to make a few more tweeks.

The next beta will have a new character to test out, hopefully the CPU will be fixed and be ready for testing, the Beta stage FACTORY will not appear as I wish to change it a bit, planned levels will appear, but only Raynbow is selectable for now. All menus are complete. Yay!

Post by: Bluhman on January 01, 2009, 07:34:27 AM
I decided I'd take a bit of a closer peek at the mechanics of this game. Here's a few suggestions about it after a quick runthrough:

-The jump seems a bit twitchy to me; it's very hard to get the full height out of each jump, because once you take that finger off the up button, your character will stop in midair and begin to descend. Pressing the jump button should apply upward force to your character until your character begins to slow down, and not until he really begins to change direction in the jump.

-For some odd reason, if a character touches the edge of a platform, they will immediately teleport to the ground level.

-As you said, you can attack in the middle of an attack. You can also change direction in the middle of an attack, as well as be doing something else, and yet have the projectile of an attack appear.

-Pleasent is way too small a target. Only Prpl's melee attack hits him; his missile's arc is very hard to get the aim right, and the magic projectile heads right over him.

Oh, and is it alright if I post a few pointers on how my characters should be done in this game as far as move combos and stuff? I also might be able to supply some resources for new stages as well.

Bluhman's sheet needs a bit of updating, after I took a short look at it.
Chisoku's actions are in place though:

If possible, make his scarf a separate object that changes frame with level of wind or movement relative to it.

Idle - The four poses in low position near the upper left.
Walk - The poses that... Look like he's walking.
Run - The four poses the look like he's running. It should let him move quite fast. There should be poses around that sheet that look a bit like starting and stopping running.
Jump 1 - That knee-ing pose in the upper center. Or maybe the one a little below and to the right that just looks like he's moving up.
Jump 2 - This could be the knee-ing pose I mentioned above instead. I don't know actually.
Jump 3 - Somersaulting; should be in the curled ball seen in the 2nd row, turning in the direction of his jump.
Backwards Jump - Backflip; should be the pose of him lying horizontally, looking sort of curved.
A attack - Alternating jabs. Hold it down to keep doing the jabs.
D - Straight kick; should look like Chisoku's about to start running, but then quickly switches into a straight kick using the two kicking animations seen at the top of the sheet.
E - Booster knee; Chisoku charges forward on a single running frame (not animated; should sort of look like he's sliding across the floor), and at end of charge, will leap up into air with knee extended out.
Guard/Shield/Duck thing - I actually have an updated sheet of Chisoku that has a guarding animation. I'll upload it at some point.
Guard+Down - Dodge; this is in his sheet; it looks like Chisoku is leaning backwards. For the moment that this move is in play, Chisoku's hitbox will dissapear.
A+Down - Cryogun - Rapidfire gun that shoots blue laser beams. (The beams are actually out of the RTP Spear animations)
D+Down - Victory Punch - A very falcon punch-esque attack, only it's chargable. Press the key combo to start charging it, then press D again to release. Or, another move key can be pressed to stop charging. If the attack is fully charged, Chisoku will flash faintly, and it can instantly be released with another D+Down combo. There are also other ways it can be released...
Running D - Victory Punch Release - Normally, if there's no charge in the Victory Punch, this will just be a standard charging punch attack. However, any charge in the Victory Punch will be transferred to this move as well. (I'm not actually sure this will work, after looking at the control configuration. Shift+Direction+D would be quite hairy to control. I'm used to running actually simply being a double tap of the direction you want to run.)

I'm still thinking of other moves these guys could have; all of this so far is based off actions I'm seeing in their sprite sheets.

Oh, and as far as level features go, what should I include as resources?

And, can you make after images on the sword attacks. Poses and animation aren't really my forte.

I drew a whole first issue (3 pages long), then I found out my scanner didn't work, so I put the first issue in my backpack, and forgot about it. When I took it back out a few weeks later, it was pretty much destroyed. (My backpack tends to do that)

I'm already in the roster? That means you're using my already completed sprites, since I did not provide any to you yet?

Also, if possible use my current avatar instead of the realistic face you've chosen.

Won't work on Vista. I was really excited for that and up for helping.

I was really hoping to not have to put it up on the first post. But I'm tired of responding of this.

About my question....?

If you want, I can show you the sheet i have in storage, and I'll let you confirm if it is the correct sheet. As for your face, as I have stated in the log, Spoon was one character too much for my current Charselect system. I am constructing a new one. Spoon's face will be added and yours will be updated as soon as I finish this new charselect system.

If you've seen the Jump Super/Ultimate Stars Sprites, those are a good size to scale on, but I will do some resizing if needed.

I actauly have a Jump edit of David that I created recently. Which makes me wonder, which sprite are you using for David? Since I only ever made one David fighting game style sheet, and that was for the new Avy Wars that never took place. Is that the one your using? Because the one I have is much bigger.

I have one in the collection I believe you are referring to. You may gladly finish this sheet and submit it.

Posts like this make me lose interest. Honestly.

MY SIG STILL HAS MISSING RESOURCES, people! 44x44 Roster images plox. And while you're all at it, some 75w x 100h Charselect Profiles.

I may be doing the programming, but if you want your character to end up the way you want, you have to submit the "paperwork" so to speak. <.<

The ? is a character to be revealed after unlocking him in-game.

I used a ripped Goku from the GBA game (Dragonball Advance Adventure), took out his hair, removed the tair, recolored him purple, gave him sleeves, and gave him a hood. And here it is:

Name: Rayonius (Ray) Autery

The intro animation at the bottom should play before the battle starts, the rest of the animations should be clear enough in their labels.

Hope ye don't mind that I'm not a terribly popular member of charas, maybe you can use me as a grunt; would be a pleasure to be in the game anyhow.

edit: oh, and x_marks_the_ed, if you need a picture to put in your Bout! sig, you can use my forum avatar, since the face i put on the sprite sheet looks way too big for it.

Boozer's in the roster. It should be obvious you don't have to be a god here to join. :D (No offense, Boozer.)

Sorry for kicking, but Ed, are you still working on this?

Well, now it's going in a post I can reference now.

YES

From time to time, I work on it, most likely once a week, but yes, progress is still going forward. I'm just mostly working on stuff that is not beta-worthy. Mainly menu systems, single player mode, and trying to keep everything in an engine, rather than a game. If I can keep it set up the way I do, I can also release the game engine for the Game Maker community. Doing this uses a lot of variable reference (which will most likely all be revamped as I now know how to use switches), and writing and debugging scripts is not something that can be done in an afternoon.

Unfortunately, it is not a big priority with me at the moment, I am primarily focused on Control Case.

EDIT: Also, by keeping it in engine form, I can easily add yearly updates with newer members and more challenges.
