Thankful? I'm British. We don't do thankful much. However, I'm thankful for the internet for successfully doubling my group of friends! I'm also thankful for rain...

We had food everyone could eat (we had gluten-free, lactose-free, etc.)

Two sets of grandparents still alive.

I ate a little bit of food (yeah, a little bit), and then watched Zoolander again for the hundredth time. Had to deal with my family all day, and I'm like some giant insult target to them, so you can imagine how fun that was.

And then I'm here now.

So, yeah. About as lame as the rest of my year has been.

It's mostly a harvest festival holiday. According to story and legend, religious pilgrims aboard the ship Mayflower left England due to religious persecution and came to the American colonies to be able to practice religion in peace. But they kind of picked a bad time to do it and were freezing in the new land without really knowing how to feed themselves and survive the winter. The Indians native Americans in the area took pity on them and helped them survive the winter and learn some basic farming techniques. The holiday is based on a feast between the natives and the pilgrims that may or may not have actually ever happened, but it makes a pretty good story. When I was in like grade school we dressed up half with pilgrim hats and half with Indian headband things and ate lunch together on the last school day before the holiday. I don't know if they still do that - my guess is that ultra-sensitive America can't handle that sort of thing anymore...

Nowadays it's a secular holiday. Traditions include meeting up with all of one's extended family, eating a big meal that focuses around a turkey, and saying what one is thankful for in the past year or so.

Heh, I remember doing that. I was an Indian. I wore some kind of leather vest thing made of brown construction paper. They still do it, but yeah, there's always ultra-sensitive people complaining that it's racist somehow, and some schools are banning it.

I also remember that Thanksgiving dress-up thing. I was a stick-in-the-mud, and I ditched the costume ASAP.

I also remember some sort of game from my pre-school. When fishstick day rolled around, the teachers would set up one of those little plastic swimming pools and fill them with water and plastic goldfish with magnets in them. Then, during recess, you could "catch" lunch with a little fishing pole with a magnet on the end.

Lots of fun, really. I miss that.
