Recruiting for a Stencyl Beta Testing Design Team
« on: May 11, 2010, 08:46:15 PM »
I know some of you have either heard me make reference to Stencyl, or somewhat followed its development over the last couple years.

http://forums.stencyl.com/

Basically, Stencyl is a game creation package, for making 2-Dimensional Games. RPG, Action, Shump, Music Sim, you name it. Its been in Development for a few years now. About 2 years ago, Jon, and the rest of the dev. team decided to start their idea from scratch, with the goal of creating the best and most accesible game creation for both game creation vets and nubs alike.

I signed up for private beta testing, which started a while back. A couple of months ago, I was accepted into private beta, and until very recently had only really tinkered. The last few days Ive been learning the ins and outs of the interface and what its capable of. Its a great engine, and after you get to know the interface its easy to get a steady learning curve happening. Ive been working on a platformer project with simple atari style 4 bit grafix, and have a bunch of potential other projects on the mind for once I can make finished product. Generally, Its was easier to pick up then Gamemaker...On par with RPG maker if not better for workflow, and has a comfortable interface.
There are a whole bunch of awesome features in development that I cant talk about outside of the tester forum, and a couple of features, like an integrated Graphics editor and game debugging and testing, as well as an integrated, online bank of downloadable plug-and-play resources for your games like snippets of code (adds funtionality like platformer movement, jumping, saving, advanced collison detection, GUIS and HUDs and stuff) graphics and music that are all uploaded by the users of stencyl, and its community. Im not blowing smoke when I say that by the time Beta goes public, the finished product will be pretty much the go-to software for making
independent 2-d games.

Basically, Id like to bring a couple of you in on the beta testing, hopefully to create a sort of a testing team. I have a set of simple graphics made, and Am making more. Animations, and 8-bit sounds, songs and loops have been made. Im figuring out the scene designer (which is the drag and drop alternative for the java that stecyl is currently using).

Serious offers only. You dont need to devote a bunch of time to this...just a bit here and there. I can give you my graphics, or you can make your own. Id like to find people to come and test the scene designer and basically LEARN THE SOFTWARE with me, not that its difficult, but Id like to bring in some familiar folks that I know are into game development.

Specifically, Im working on a platformer game, Jump, run and gun, similar to megaman meets cave story, with graphics similar to Herocore (google that). Not story heavy, nothing epic, just a simple engine with solid flow and gameplay, and would like to bring someone on with this project. Im not terribly active with the tester community, and would like to collaborate on design documents and a game idea to post over in the community.

Basically, I can get you a beta invite. Im posting the Project thread soon, and design docs. I can refer you to test under the assumption that you are part of my design team.

Check out the website. Ask me Questions here.
If youd like to join me on this
Ill post the Project Info Soon, with mockups, and a title. and post a link to the project Im making here, a bit later.

I'm gonna use this so hard when I get time. Of course, AFAIK, you already signed me up or something. Haven't received anything from Stencyl themselves, though.

This sounds pretty awesome.  I think I had heard of this before but had not looked up much on it.  School will be letting out soon, so I'd have plenty of time to do this sort of thing.  None-the-less this seems like it would be an interesting experience.

Ah, what the hell, I'll join in.
I've been interested in Stencyl, but haven't really joined up for the beta, because...I'm actually perfectly fine with the psuedo-code of GM.
I'd absolutely love an opportunity to learn a new gaming platform, though.

I'm really interested in this, but I don't know if I can really dedicate, well, anything to it beyond tooling around a bit with the interface and learning a bit about it. Sign me up if you like, I am interested in giving this thing a look.

I've played some beta games made in stencyl, they were really great. I can't wait to give stencyl a look through myself.

Just asking, what operating systems does Stencyl support?

SO ANYWAYS

Just so I know OFFICIALLY who is in an not

Send me a message, with your primary email, how much time you can spend testing stencyl, and What aspect of the team you are interested in (graphics sound etc)

I think anyone who has any skill with events in r2k would find stencyls editor easy once they adjust to it

I would love, love, LOVE, to get my hands on a beta for Stencyl. I'm really sick of using Rm2k3, and I don't feel like learning Gamemaker with this coming round the bend. The problem is, I would mostly contribute music/sound, which you said is already set to go. I could contribute graphics, considering the style you're using wouldn't be too hard for me to get a hang of. But what other things specifically would you need help for? I'll gladly test the ins and outs of the game, learn the program, and tinker with everything. I've been wanting a new program to explore for a while.
