Anti-virus software

So mine expired, yar. Got the new version of it, installed it and it's still complaining. So, I set back the year to 2000 and problem solved.

Though, I'm wondering. Is it even nessecary? One of those.

I've always thought that you always need one, on a pc at least, and the power of the software you needed depended on what you do with the computer.

I've never ever had a virus checker or anti-virus softwear or anything.
Although I do have something for spywear, and adwear. But meh.

I have one, "just in case". It can never hurt to have it, unless it's a piece of crap that doesn't do anything (I'm lookin at you, McAfee)

You should have one if you use MSN a lot, and update it a lot to look for worms.

I suggest AVG. It's been helpful. Or if you can get it to work, I'd also suggest Housecall.

AVG and Stinger go pretty much hand-in-hand. Stinger can clean up what AVG leaves behind when it does it's thing and pick up any spyware AVG misses.

To answer the question, yes. Virus protection is essential. However, those commercial virus protectors are all just a bunch of ****ing crap. They plant viruses in your computer and say that if you want your computer saved, you must pay 500$. You could pay, but in another month it plants another virus and demands the same thing.  Just about every commercial virus protector does this.

Another thing to avoid is those programs that claim they get rid of all spam, viruses, worms, trojans, etc. No program so far has been able to do a good job when trying to get rid of them all at once. It's better to have separate programs dealing with the threats individually.
