XNA Studio
« on: October 27, 2006, 05:45:43 AM »
So yeah, a little while ago I got a membership card at gamestop, and with that they gave me a free subscription to this magazine called Game Informer, or something like that. Anyway, there was an article in it about XNA studio express, which is supposed to be a game making engine developed by microsoft for the xbox 360 and the pc. From what I've seen, they've tried to make it simple to use, as no scripting knowlage is required, the graphic capablilties seem to be nice, and well, overall, it seems like it could pwn rpg maker.

Being a game making program, I'm sure someone here has heard about it before and knows a bit about it. It looks like it could be solid, but it doens't look like making rpgs with it will be that easy.

I don't know many details about it, and I don't have a site for it, though I'm sure you'll find something if you search google for XNA studio express or something.

So yeah, whats your thoughts on this? Anyone plan on being a converter :p

Sounds cool, depends on how much they charge for it though. I'm not buying a 360 until It goes down in price once, so I'll have to wait and see how expensive this program is.

I think you'll like the price, cuz its free. At least the basic version is free. With the basic version, you can't create 360 games. You also get starter kits and premade stuff if you get the membership (like the rtp crap I'm guessing). While that would probably be nice to have, most people hate defult graphics, so you probably wouldn't use them too much anyway.

The membership cost is $100 a year. Which I think is crap.

Anyway, microsoft will probably come out with a paid version of the software and include the starter kits and such. If not, I'm sure someone will put them up for grabs on the internet.

I've heard of it. I got a free Game Informer subscription too. It's done now, and I don't think I'll be getting another.

On topic. I'm not getting a 360, and even if I did, I probably wouldn't pick this up. I still like the idea of a free-easy to use game maker.

Usually, I don't like RPG makers other than 2k and 2k3 because they don't look "Super Nintendo-ish." I like the looks of those games, with the 256 color limits and stuff. I guess that's just a hobby thing.

I'd get the PC version, for da customariness. Just like RPG Maker, you couldn't like draw your own graphics and **** for the PSX version. So... ya. Also, I don't have a 360.

Well, you could make a set in-game, but it gave you no idea of where the grid was for the poses and you had an overly sensitive controller. There was like a dexcard or something you could transfer files to, but the maker itself sucked. 999 switches and a limited number of maps with no variables I dont think.

Yeah, the article didn't say much about any of the specs or anything. Though I thought that the version thats out now is just a demo or trial version, I have a hard time believing that the full version would only have 999 switches and no variables...

Anyway, the only way I'd even consider using it would be if they had an optional scripting system with C++ or some form of basic or something, or at least include arrays in the system. If rm2k3 had arrays, it would save me hours and hours of work.

But yeah, if this came out a few years ago, I would have switched over just for the 3d support and crap, but yeah, I doub't I'll use this once I'm done with rm2k3.

XD, my bad. The 999 switch thing didn't bother me with the psx rpg maker, back then, I had no f***ing clue what a switch was or how to work it. Whenever a key scene happened, I just gave the party an item or something, and as long as they had that item, the scene wouldn't play again.
