TV as computer monitor?
« on: April 25, 2005, 12:52:26 AM »
I have massive hardware faluire on my computer, and its probably going to be cheaper for me to buy a new computer than to fix it. So, in the mean time, I can use an old computer that my dad had, only problem is it doesn't have a monitor, plus I'd have no room for a monitor in my room (the reason why my current compy is a laptop). Anyway, at my old school, my teachers used to hook up their tv's as monitors to present stuff to the class. If I could hook up the old compy to use my tv as a monitor, it'd be a lot cheaper (I think), and it would save a lot of room. Only problem is I have no idea what attachments and stuff I would need for it, or how much they cost. So does anyone know what attachments and stuff I would need, and about how much they would cost?

Oh, and my compy can't read the backup disk, so I lost everything, including my game. To everyone who I was going to make something for, don't count on getting it any time soon. I also lost my game, so I'm probably going to move on to rmxp with a game I was planning, thats not certain, but I don't know if I could stand re-making 30% of my game. I do have a demo version of it online, so I wouldn't have to completely start over, I just don't know if I'm up to it.

Oh man, that sucks, bad. I was looking foward to your game. But anyways, a friend of mine has to do that and he uses something, but it looked really bad. Maybe someone here knows what I'm talking about. Or maybe you could buy a 10 dollar monitor at Goodwill or something for the meantime.

Look at the back of the computer and see if there is a videocord slot in the back, like the ones you use to hook up a PS2 or Xbox or Gamecube. If there is, simply connect that to your TV. If your TV doesn't have any audio/video slots, you can get an RF modulator at Radioshack for around $10 that can hook it into your cable cords.

Thanks a ton Osmose, when I looked for things that did what the RF modulators did, I always looked in the computer section of the store. I searched them up at Best Buy, and they're listed under the tv/dvd catagory.

I'll be running out to Best Buy tuesday if I have enough gas in my car, and I'll check it out. I need to get a keyboard as well, but with any luck, I should have my compy all set and ready next weekend. In the mean time, I'll work to see if I can recover my back up files, if not, I'll start working on making graphics for my new game which I allready have concept chars and tiles drawn out to make the process a lot faster.

Is that similar to a Scart Lead?

Anyways, I agree. Do that, and please don't give up on the game. Use what you have and carry on. ;)

Hmm, I have two differant hook ups right by where the hook up to the monitor is located. One is a coaxial (sp?) port, but I don't have any of those types of chords around my house right now. The other hook up is for a chord like the yellow, red, and white ones for video and sound, but its black. I tried hooking the video cable from my computer to my dvd/vcr player, but I didn't get it to work. I looked in the controll panel for an option to switch the video feed into the tv, but I didn't find anything it, I didn't even find anything to do with the monitor hook up. I knew where to go with my windows xp compy, but this 98 one is a bit messed up.

As for my game, if I can recover it, I'll continue for sure. When I started making it at the begining of the school year, I designed it to be short so I could finish it by the end of the school year so I would have the summer to my rmxp game. If I started working on my game from my demo, I would be working on it for half the summer at least, and I just don't know if I can do that. So unless I get some major help, I'll probably start with my 2k3 game.

To everyone who liked my 2k3 game: I got most of the elements for my 2k3 game from this rmxp game I'm planning. The two will have a lot in common, except this xp game will have better graphics, cooler systems, a well-developed story line, and it will be quite a bit longer than my 2k3 game would have been. Chances are that if you liked my 2k3 game, you'll like the xp game just as much.

I'm still not 100% sure what I'll do yet though...
