Default back row

In RPG Maker 2003, Is there a way to assign a character to the back row as soon as he joins your team?  I mean automatically, without having to go to the options screen.

Try going into the database and then into battle layout. Click on whichever character you need in the back row and then hit back under "Row Shown".

It doesn't.  That just changes where they're shown in that particular menu. It has no effect on the game.

Try editing the Battle Layout tab on his/her Character
Directions:
1)Goto Database
2)Goto Battle Layout
3)Change the Chara's row
