The Game with no name
« on: October 29, 2005, 07:01:49 PM »
I've come up with a game that looks pretty good so far. When you first read it, it will sound pretty cliched, but it really isn't. Its a Mario game, and I can't decide what to call it.

Anyway, this is it -

Many years ago, during the arcade era, a new character surfaced - Jumpman. Then, a few years later, Mario came out and stole the spotlight. Over the course of many years, Jumpman had to tolerate the growing popularity of this 'Mario' character...

... but now, Jumpman has a plan to take back the spotlight, a plan that could disrupt the very fabric of the video-game dimension. He's going to take characters from all around the universe and pit them against Mario, in an attempt to become the greatest once again.

The main character, of course, is Mario. But there are many characters that can join your party. Most are from Super Smash Brothers, and I thought to name it Super Smash Brothers RPG, but it just sounds too cliched.

Those who don't know who jumpman was, he was the inspiration for Mario. He starred in Donkey Kong, as the blue-overalls-wearing hero.

It's not 'cliched,' it's a fan game.
I think it's stupid to make this game an RPG, the only way it could be pulled off is like, a fighting game.

I actually think it sounds pretty fun. Though you'll have to keep the game light hearted, I doubt this will turn out well if you try and make it a seriuos game.

I wouldn't worry about if your title is cliche or not with a fan game of this nature. Super Smash RPG, Mario: the revenge of Jumpman, whatever fits the game.

Yes, if you make this game comedic or parody of other games/cliches then it could be pretty fun.

Please, whatever you do, dont use colons ( : ) in your title. Its done so much and its becoming an eye-sore. But you do need to put some serious thought into your title, as this is important. Don't slap something together that sounds cool. Hmm, maybe I should write a tutorial about naming your game. http://www.geocities.com/llvllerlin/emot-raise.gif

Theres nothing wrong with :'s when used proporly. Though they should only be used when dealing with games in a series. Since Mario is a big series, it works. Now lets say your using the same story, except you're making up your own characters, since it's no longer part of a series, the :'s can't be used. ;)

Perhaps if the title were to be Mario: Revenge of Jumpman, then yes it works. I will have to go over proper colon use in game titles with the tutorial. ;)

I prefer to stylize it a different way. Say, if the game was written about in a video game magazine, it would be written "Mario: Revenge of Whateveritis", but on the box/title screen or whatever, "MARIO" in big letters at the top and "Revenge of Whatever" underneath it, perhaps divided by a horizontal rule-type thing.

Its a comedy. I might be a noob to the forums here, but I'm no noob to Rm2k3, and I already have a CBS up. There are 20-some characters. I just can't decide which characters to put in the game. I have awesome sprite sheets for these characters-

Mario (of course)
Luigi
Bobbery
Wart
Mips
Koops
Baby Mario/Luigi

Kirby (with 26 powers, including character powers)

Roy Eliwood
Canas

Mr. Game and Watch

Link
Zelda/Shiek
Gannondorf

8-Bit and 16-bit (Two new characters I made that can change into not-so-perfect copys of other characters)

Samus

Pikachu
Pichu Twins

Diddy Kong
DK

Captain Falcon

Ness

And there are more, it's just the sprite sheets for them suck.

No Marth?!

No seriously, I think Lugi, Kirby, Link, Zelda/Sheik and Gannondorf should be in it.

I like how the game sounds, but I think I have already played a game called Super Smash Bros RPG or something like that.

I'd have to agree with the "No Marth!?" thing. He's much better then Eliwood. But, ironicly, the only difference between Eliwood and Marth is that marth has blue hair. So.... it you wanted to put Marth in all you'd have to do is recolor the hair.

Kirby is pretty hard to do, I have a lot of different powers for him that I'm putting into the game, like:

Ball
Wheel
Mirror
Laser
Beam
Meteor
Ufo
Hammer
Mini
Crash
Cutter
Backdrop
Ice
Parasol
Sword

M-cap
L-cap
W-cap
WL-cap
Link
Falcon
MrGaW
Dr Mario
Ness
Bowser (my favorite)

I'm getting most of my resources from TSR, as most of you could guess.

Plus, the CBS is 24-karat gold. It's sorta like an RPG, but it's not. You basically have a list of commands, and you can choose 1-5 depending on what you want to do or what you are able to do, and your attack is based on those choices.

Example - Mario

Jump (1BP) + Slam (3BP) = Ground Pound

Jump (1BP) + Mario Spin (4BP) = Mario Tornado

Jump (1BP) + Jump (1BP) = Multi-Bounce#2 (Jump on one enemy, bounce off and hit another)

Kick (1BP) + Mario Spin (4BP) = Spin Kick

Jump (1BP) + Fireball (3BP) + Mario Spin (4BP) = Meteorite Shower

Jump (1BP) + Fireball (3BP) + Fireball (3BP) + Fireball (3BP) + Mario Spin (4BP) = Meteor Shower

There are many attacks already set up. Basically, the cbs goes just like this -

It takes 100 SP to level up. Every time you level up, you can either increase your HitP, BattleP, ComboP, or BadgeP. HitP is your HP. Common knowledge. BattleP are your Battle Points. You use these every time you attack. An attack such as Jump uses up one Battle Point. You can recharge these points by using Charge or defeating an enemy. Also, if you pull of a new Combo, all of your points automatically recarge. You see, much like Rikku's Mix ability, you don't have a list of combos. You have to experiment. If you use Jump and couple it with Fireball, there is no combo. All you will do is jump on the enemy, and then land, and then shoot a fireball. As soon as you pull of a new combo move, though, it gets added to your Combo Dictionary. Combo moves are normally more powerful that the 2 moves on thier own. Every time you use a combo, you not only use the specified amount of BP, but you also use up 1 ComboP.

Anyone who has played Paper Mario 1 or 2 will know what badges are. You equip these, and it can increase something, give you a new skill, do whatever.

So far, the only characters I have left (to finish thier attacks and combos) are Kirby's 20-some entitys, and the Pichu Bros. Then, after them, I might add some of the other characters that have yet-to-be-decent sprite sheets (after i decentize them, of course).
