There' no real way to teach someone.  All you can really do is show them the basics, and he or she has to learn on his or her own.

The most important things to teach first would be switches and variables.

The help is like a dictionary. No one reads through it all the way, but when they need something specific they can find some information. Show him how to use the help so he can look things up himself.

If you have RM2000 the sample game is very good at teaching people as it has tons of simple and advanced techniques that are really useful for a beginner.

I've gone through teaching omeone before, just walk hm through the databse, show him the basic event like chests and tell him to contact you when he needs assistance.

I learned throught the PSX rpg maker instruction book. It sucked though.

First I'd have them play through a sample game.
Then I'd show them how to work the database. Making hero's, items, ect.
Then I'd work on how to make maps.
Then how to add events, starting with people, messages, and teleporting.
Then to switches and variables.
Then just by practicing.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN
