Yes, BUT I did get most tabs by just trying out myself. Almost published them on the internet because they were shiat, but so are most on the internet.

"real" musicians? That sounds kinda one sided right there, if you ask me. I don't see why people think that because they can read sheet music, they're suddenly better than people that use Tabs. It's a preference, you choose one and get on with it. Doesn't make you better or worse.

EDIT: And if using sheet music is better, why isn't it banned from the internet as well? I'm actually not sure if it is, but if it isn't, than wtf?

Sheet music (whish really isn't on sheets on the net (hence the term 'standard notation')) can be copywrighted, and is therefore already not allowed to be distributed on the net like a tab.  The problem is tabs can't be copywrighten (sp?).

As for the 'real musicians use standard notation' notion, it has arguments for both sides.  Certainly the ability to read it does indicate a slightly higher comitment on the musician's part as far as music theory, it has little to no bearing on a musician's actual skill with the instrument however.  I don't even know what the note on the bass cleff are off the top of my head.

Since there are by far more cover bands out there than original bands, the loss of internet tabs would really, really be a problem.  Especially considering cover bands actually promote the band it's covering.  I know more than a couple punk kids (no offense, just kids who listen to punk) who started listening to (and would eventually buy) Megadeth because they saw us playing Peace Sells.  My then guitarist even started listening to BOC when we decided to do a heavy cover of Godzilla.

EDIT:  I just read the link to the definition of tabs, and realized the second paragraph is just kind of a reiteration of that.  Oops.

I'm not saying that the ability of reading sheet music makes you a real musicians, but the ability to create something yourself without it sounding shetty does make you one.

tab is not a full form of notation, as there is no directly laid-out and straightforward method regarding rhythm. Whether or not someone plays using this technique does not dictate whether or not that person is a true musician. Even people who read proper notation can not always be considered musicians just by this standard. Musicanship can only be measured by an understanding of both technique and at least some theoretical knowledge. An imitator is not a musician, but someone who can at least on some level translate from the page to the ear by a technique other than rote is a musician in my book.
