My Somewhat-annual I-hate-My-Job thread
« on: January 25, 2006, 09:24:58 PM »
yes I've made threads about it before. However, I can't find that thread where you just rant and leave. I've decided to post in here since it will most likely get mod-rushed in All of All.

So, here is a list of why I hate my job, starting with the most recent instance:

1. WTF, is that propane? Why do I smell propane!? Why is someone spot welding in the store?? Great, now I have a headache.

2. Cleaning up messes. I just have the worst luck. Someone screws up, even months before, and never has to see this customer again. I, however, just happen to be working when they want to bitch at me about something I had no control over. Since I'm the one working, I have to fix the problem, which is never simple. They will tell me some lengthy story about how the other person screwed up and conveniently leave out the part where they dropped the phone in the toilet.

It usually involves many calls to customer service and between my manage, who will in turn tell me what I already know: We can't help the customer. Explaining this to the customer just makes them more mad. No matter how I phrase my dismissal, they will not leave but insist that I go even more above and beyond my duties and punch [Phone Company CEO] in the jaw and give the customer a new phone and a gajibbitybillion free minutes.

3. Ignorant, uneducated customers. Just how hard is it for you to activate your own prepaid card? Your not getting a signal where you want to use your phone? Dear god, no! Let me alert the authorities as you are the first person to whom this has happened!

4. Poor sales. Manager is constantly steamed that the store is not making enough money and the employees are to blame. Apparently, we are not executing sales, asking questions, and closing the sale. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the store is located within Food Town (let me count the number of things wrong with this) which is (1) a grocery store primarily for low income families living who may or may not be using food stamps to do their shopping, (2) the majority of them, in all truthfulness, having horrible/bad credit and (3) who speak 100% spanish and 0.1% english (not being racist, unfortunately). Right outside in Food Town's parking lot is a corporate T-Mobile store, who can now offer better deals on upgrades thanks to new policies from T-Mobile. Literally a 30 second drive from out little kiosk/booth in Food Town is our main store, where the manager works. In a nutshell: our customer base cannot afford cellphones and have way too many options as far as stores to visit within a mile radius (maybe less).

This job is so bad we've had many employees come and go in the time I've worked here. The longest working employee, other than me, was here for about a year. The shortest working employee, who was officially hired, didn't show up for his first day of work. Many quit within the first few weeks of starting. I will attempt to run through them:

When I started, the booth I am currently at was closed because the entire staff had quit. I was the first hire, at 17. After me was:

2. Tom - Quit a year later. Second longest working employee.
3. Jamie - Quit because manage yelled at her.
4. David - Worked for a week then pulled a noshow. I got him this job. :|
5. Dustin - Had worked here previously, was pissed, quit about a month or so later
6. Miguel - Got angry with manager and quit. He would return periodically now and then afterward for short periods of employment.
-I quit sometime around here. Tom quit a few months later at about his year mark.
7. Shiree - Got angry with manager and quit. She would return periodically now and then afterward for short periods of employment. Most recently pulled a noshow.
8. Lara - Got angry with manager and quit.
9. Whitney - Typical teenage worker/quit.
-I was rehired about 7 months later, after failing to acquire new employment. 789 and I went well for a while. 7, 8, and 9 all quit a good while later, leaving me alone.
10. David - Good worker, but didn't get along with manager.
11.  ???? - I'm drawing a blank. The period where boss was looking for new employees was definately filled with a few 1 week workers, as well as a return from Miguel (who was caught looking at beast porn by David and confirmed true by myself). I quit and was hired back as manager (simply meant I had more responsibility for same pay) of this crappy booth within a week during this time.
12. Luis - The third longest worker. Got mad and quit. He was hired back, then quit again a good while afterward, mad again.
13. John - Graphics Designer looking for work. Took this job till he got one in his field. Probably the only other employee to leave on good terms. I was stripped of my manager position (hooray!) and it was given to John.
14. Wes - Got him the job, he stayed for about a year, then quit. He is still looking for work. Loser.
15. Shamier - Quit to go to college
16. Darius - Quit to go to college/mad
- 14,15,16 and I held up the stores for a good while. I was the unofficial manager during this time and up until now. It just means that there is weight to what I say.
17. ???? - Another slew of hire/quits/noshows.
18. Kevin - Currently working
19. Justin - Currently working
20. Eddie - Worked for about a month or so, then quit, somewhat mad at manager.

That brings us up to now: Me, Kevin, and Justin. Thats twenty people that I can vouch for working here, not counting the many people who have quit before I got to know their names. If I could I would probably add another 5 to 7 names where you see the ????s (the [letter]???? just means I can't remember their name but it starts with [letter]).

So, at this moment, I'm not too happy or unhappy with my job. There are pretty nice aspects about it (such as being on forums and downloading things while at work). About the only thing I haven't done is play computer games at work, though I'm sure I'd get away with it if I did. This is the first and only job I've ever had. Sad, perhaps, but looks good on a resume. If I don't find other employment before I graduate I'll probably be here until October of this year. That should make about + or - 4 years.

I wonder whos going to read this....  :mrT:

"I'll post this thread here so it doesn't get moderated as fast as it would where it belongs."

Oh Drighton, you crazy diamond.

So, that was an interesting read, however, I am rather tired, and have forgotten what it was about. The amount of people that have come and gone from your workplace since you first started?

Semi-Annual? More like every three months.

Aside from that, I feel pity toward you.

I actually was not feeling like that when I posted. It had taken me so long to write that by the time I was finished I had "cured" myself. But I spent so much tyme writing it out that I decided to post it anyways.

I've seen bits and pieces of Clerks.

Diamonds are forever.

I've learned that no matter where you work, you'll have to work with or handle tards. It is inevitable. ZKX, you can't run from it. :|
Yes, I mean graduate college.

Gajibbitybillion. I just made it up. If I can get it used/published five separate times, it will go into a dictionary.
