Nowadays games.
« on: March 20, 2006, 08:33:47 PM »
It's just me or they're getting just smaller and smaller and SMALLER?
Back at the SNES era, there were games that, if not big, at least dificult enough so we wouldn't beat it so easly, as an example, Knights of the Round, playing with my cousin, in easy mode, we could never finish it, we now can, but only in the easy mode, and even so we have some dificulty and never both of us made it to the end, as I or he aways dies in the last level.
Then we have RPGs. The main reason I got to RPGs, is because they're (or they were) long, and I wouldn't need to play another game so soon. Even now, 4 years after playing, I can't beat FF7 (I'm actually stuck, could you help me saying what I have to do after taking Red's gramps to where Aerith died?) or FF9 (What do I have to do after getting that boat?) nor Breath of Fire III or IV (I know what to do, but I can't beat the bosses.)
Most of the games I got to beat, it was using Gameshark or walktroughs after I got bored of loosing and decided I seriously needed help. There are some, such as Star Wars: Jedi Battles, that I can't get past the second level, even is easy mode (yes, both me and my cousin suck that much ¬¬).

Now, one day of these, I've decided to stop relying on others to get games, and picked one that semeed alright. It was the Ultimate Spiderman (tm) and it was a great game, in my opinion.... for the three hours it lasted.
Yes, three hours, I beat the game, now what? The other's spiderman games back in PSone had secret outfits that gave you powers and you could restart the game with them.
 This one has outfits?
 Yes.
 They do anything?
 No.
Can you restart the game with them?
 You wish.
So, what can I do now?
Well, you can fight those random thugs.
What, like those I already did to unlock new levels, but got repetitive and I moved on?
 Yes.
 No, what else.
 You can race through town.
 Cool, with who?
 No one.
 What, alone?!
Well, Human Torch sometimes race with you.
Better, can my friend control him?
 What? No!
Well, is he at least hard to race against?
 Not that much.
 *sigh* Anything else?
 Play as Venow.
You got my attention, what can I do with him?
 Walk around and smash things.
 Yes, yes, and?
 And what?
 What else beside smash things?
Well, you can smash MORE things!
 ...
 What?
Sorry, I don't guess I'll be playing you again so soon.

So yes, old games were not just longer, but there was MORE things to do.

Heh, try downloading some normal(what we call normal) japanese games. Newer games are getting shorter and easier.

If you want to play a hard old school rpg try out the first Alundra. That game will make you swear, curse, and use profanity like no other.

The only hard game I have played out of the newer ones would be Kingdom Hearts on expert mode.

Some RPGs(like Star Ocean Untill the end of time, Xenosaga, Deagon Quest 8) I beat witout getting killed once. Too easy.

Oh, yes, Alundra, I have it, and I completaly know what are you talking about, though I curse mostly because in most scenes we can't skip what they are talking and you talk too much! >.<

I'm not talking about all games, though, MGS3 is something that I consider relativaly long, and has secrets enough to keep me playing more. As for KH, I only finished it in normal mode, and I swear I won't go to anything harder while I don't beat Sephiroth.

I know exactly what you mean. An example that sticks out in my mind right now is Mario and Luigi. The first one for the GBA was excellent in every way: involving battle system, memorable music, innovative gameplay and an endearing storyline. But best of all, it was nice and long. There was much time to be spent on it.

Now, there's the sequal Partners in Time. Well, before I get into the other stuff, I want to point out what this thread is all about. I've played a little over 12 hours total and I'm already at the final boss. I'm underleveled so I can't win, but come on... 12 HOURS!? I believe I spent at least double that on the first one. Besides, that everything was toned down. They could have reused the gameplay elements in cool new ways, but instead they used all dumbed down new ways. The music was nice, but not as good, and the battle system had somewhat less depth to it. Brothers items weren't as cool as brothers attacks. So in other words, yeah some games today are just downright disappointing.

To answer your questions about FF7 and 9. In FF7, I know where you are but I'm trying to think of what to do. I haven't played it in a while. Did you get that little key from underwater? Anyway, in FF9, could you maybe be more specific? I think you are talking about the Blue Narciss, so I'll go with that. I believe you are supposed to go to the Lost Continent, ya know the snowy one, but I kind of forget that too. If you really want to know there's always online guides.

Well, in FF7, it's probaly the underwater key then. As in FF9, it's.. just after Dagger lost her voice. And I do think I have to go to the snowy continent, but everytime I go there I get an interessting and very cool nothingness that follows me around. I've talked to each and every NPC of the game. Twice. Didn't change a thing.

FF9... hmm... Its been a LONG while since I played that but I think you go to Lindblum and talk with cid first. Because the purpose of going to the snowy continent was to find Cids Wife. I dont know Its been a LONG while since I played that and from talking about it, I may play it again and beat it my 4th time :P.

K, I remember this and I know where you are now. :P You have to go to the snowy continent up north. Go thru the areas of that one city you see there (*You should've seen like a cut scene with Kuja walking by with all these Black mages.) Afterwards you reach a moogle (female) in the city and if I remember correctly you make a right at the moogle straight to the entrance of mount Gulug. (Which I think shows another cut scene with Kuja opening the door to mount Gulug.) NOTE: Remember to open all chests and whatnot there because that is the only time you go in.

Yes... FF9 shows its true difficulty if you try to fight Ozma... "try" being the key word most of the time _sweat_

KH Expert Mode isn't so bad... I find it a lot more fun than the normal game. Even small battles often become epic! Though Sephiroth is really tough in Expert... still not as bad as the Final Fantasy superbosses anyways!

Star Ocean Till the End of Time easy, hmm? I assume you're referring to the lower difficulty modes... you CANNOT refer to 4D mode as easy. All enemy stats x1.8, optional enemies x3? That's REALLY nasty! Besides, the optional dungeons are challenging enough on Galaxy Mode (the Normal Mode)... meh. I love the game anyways :D

Oh, and for FF7... there's not really much more to go after where you got stuck lol, unless you intend to challenge the might of the WEAPONs and finish the other sidequests (highly recommended)
The Key of the Ancients is located almost directly underneath the Forgotten City, btw. There's a recess in the underwater wall which leads to it somewhere near the Gold Saucer area... if I remember properly. DO NOT ENGAGE EMERALD WEAPON!

RPGs are getting easier on the whole though. For instance, if you compare the earlier FFs... FF1, 2, 4 and 5 (I haven't played 3) are much harder than 7, 8, 9, X or X-2. That said, the secret bosses are much easier in the older ones, but of course there are less sidequests.

Personally, I like my games to be fairly challenging with incredibly hard secret bosses (FFX's Dark Aeons are a VERY GOOD example) and a lot of sidequests. I like extra challenges :D

I love long games! *hugs Dragon Warrior VII*
That game took me 170 hours to beat the first time, and 120 the second time. @_@ Plus there's a ton of stuff to do even after you beat the game, and it's not a very easy game. A lot of the bosses really pissed me off. >_< Damn you, HellCloud!  :yell:  It's definately one of my favorites games ever.
