Wants to get into Flash

I've been wanting to make flash games and movies for a long time, but i'm really not sure what i'm getting into.

What do i need to do it?  I was told you can use game maker, but I don't think that's true.  

How hard is it to do?

You can't use game maker.
You should practice animating and drawing smoothly and exploring the program for a long time, then start learning buttons.

Macromedia/Adobe Flash 8. You can download a 30-day demo from their website, which is easily cracked from that point.
