How I make the background of my avatar transparent?

the closest thing would be to change the color of the background to a relatively close color to the background.

Okay, there's a problem with making your avatar transparent. Open it up in paint (or another program) and zoom up on it. Look at where the face stops and the white background starts. See that? There's no clear-cut background colour. Fill in the white with black, you'll see. Now, you can do gradient transparency (for some browsers) with PNGs in photoshop. The problem is, you've already made the picture smaller than the original PL FaceMaker result, right?
If you posted the original picture, the one with a clear border, it would be easier to do this.
I've posted a picture to explain what I mean.
Diagram A results in a nice transparency, diagram B results in a bad one, with superflous colour around the edge of the shape. Your avatar (shown in the middle) is like diagram B.
