Midis not playing?
« on: February 03, 2007, 10:45:37 PM »
This may go in programming, but the only thing it seems to affect is RPG Maker, so I'm posting it here.

I've heard a lot of complaints (not recently, but over time) about music not being able to be heard in RPG Maker games. I've found what I think is the reason for this, and I will tell you what it is and how to fix it.

In the windows media player, you will notice a volume bar:

In the volume control, you will notice this volume bar:

The bar above is what controls the volume output of midis in RPG Maker. If that bar is all the way down, you will not hear any midi sound in your games.

Now, why did I also so the windows media player bar? Because, sometimes (I've noticed), when you put the volume down, the SW Synth follows it. This means if you nearly mute the media player, the SW Synth might go all the way down as well. The easy way to fix this is to just check your SW Synth when you don't hear a midi playing, and put that back up if it's down.

There may be other reasons why music isn't playing, and those reasons may have other methods of being fixed. If anyone has another method of fixing it, other than uninstall/install, feel free to post. If anyone has a question, or if this didn't work for you, post that as well. I may just have a buggy computer, I don't know :p

Ok, here's my problem. I dont hear midis at all. They don't sound in RPG Maker or Windows Media. They will however play in a midi developing program, but only if I set the Output to Microsoft Wavetable GW synth, as opposed to the other setting, MPU-401. The MPU-401 settings says it has 0 voices and 0 notes. Any ideas what could be wrong? Also, do you know any way I could maybe change my Window Media Player's midi output to Microsoft Wavetable? If that's possible....

It sounds like you need to redownload your midi driver, or just reinstall it from your manufactorers disk, or motherboard disk if you custom built your computer.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

I had this problem for about 2 months. I eventually gave up on RPG maker altogether. Turns out it was muted. If you have the same problem I had, go to control panel, sounds, then look for the midi part. There are many volume bars, sometimes one of them is on 0 volume or the "mute" box is ticked. Try that if all else fails.

Always go to Control panel and check the definitons there first, whenever you have a problem. It's where most problems start.

Also, I think the best MIDI setting is Microsoft GS Wave Table SW, I never got any troubles while using it.

Check to see if your sound drivers are correctly installed,  or make sure your windows media player is up to date or real player.  Cause I had the same probelm but my drivers was just acting up.
