Pirates
« on: February 04, 2007, 04:34:25 AM »
FINALLY
RPG Maker 2003
After 4 months, Pirates has finally reached the end of its development.

About Pirates
For the last 4 months I've been working on what had first seemed to be a small project, but as ideas continued to build it turned out to be a full-fledged game.
I'll admit it isn't the most graphically appealing games I've made, but it certainly makes up for it with its gameplay.
Since the last release there have a been a few additions, none in terms of extra minigames outside of the actual story but that doesn't matter, the story is the most fun part of the game.

What I had set out to do was make a game that portrays the stereotypical view we have regarding Pirates, of course I twisted things around a little bit, shooting gulls, sword fighting penguins and so on, but the cliche's are all still there...

The result left a game consisting of 21 levels, 3 methods of playing and many different ways of doing so.
Throughout the course of it all, small snippets of text appear, giving a brief overview of what I'm trying to get across in the game, or atleast, what or how I thought Pirates were...

Starting Up

Title Screen...
Not very flashy looking is it?
No matter, it's not what we're there for.
You can either go straight into story mode, or go to your options menu...

Here is your options menu, this is where you save your progress and access other unlocked features.
Practice Mode and Surival Mode are there to begin with, of course this is so you can brush up on your skills... but more can be unlocked by doing well in Survival Mode...

OLD SCREENSHOTS

It may not look like much, graphically anyway, don't underestimate the difficulty of this game, it is considerably toward the end.

Go through each level shooting all enemies that cross your path, hitting multiple enemies or hitting them in different ways will make bonuses like this appear.

Of course, every level is followed by a Level Complete sequence where your performance from that level is shown...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/5.png
The whole game isn't just simple enemies though, you get your boss levels too.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/6.png
With each boss level completion comes a nice little bonus to go with it...

http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/44244/Ship%20Change.gif
Your ship has 3 different looks and speeds over the course of the game.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/7.png http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/8.png
Now aside from the gulls, there are other enemies, explained further down.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/9.png http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/10.png
Some bosses don't obey certain laws that they should, the ghost ship makes a good example.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/11.png
Here we have the main heroes of the game, throughout their brief appearances you'll grow a small attachment to them.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/12.png http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/13.png http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/14.png
It wouldn't be a game about pirates if there weren't any digging games now would it?

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/15.png
What treasure do you get by the end of it all?
Wait and see.
Well that was a mouthful...
Prepared for more?

So what's new?
Let's see...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/16.png
2 new characters, well, more like NPCs but they're still new, these are pretty much your evil counterparts...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/17.png
Watch the 2 penguins have it out in a very Piratey swordfight.
Unfortunately I didn't have any ideas for the enemy duck so he kinda disappears...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/18.png http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/19.png
Wow, a new ship you say?
With new abilities too?
Like what?

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/20.png
The mirror ball enchantment gives you the ability to reverse your cannon ball's direction.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/21.png
The jumping and rear cannon are bound to make the game more interesting...
We don't want another titanic scene now do we?

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/22.png
Let's play spotlight!
Playing the game is always more fun in the dark...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k214/_Carius/Games/Pirates/23.png
And just when you thought you'd seen it all, there is of course the Kraken, a boss of which I am very pleased about, I'm not going to say much about it, although you've all seen the youtube video of it.

Okay, we're coming to the end of this presentation now, I'll throw one more thing your way to try and entice you moreso...
Here are all the videos that I have recorded over the 4 months of construction.

Thankyou for reading through all of that, now what you've all waited for...

DOWNLOAD PIRATES HERE!

Patch for those who have already downloaded it but are having troubles with levels 11 or 13.
To use: Simply drag all of the content from the zip folder and overwrite the materials in your existing Pirates folder.

Comments welcome, criticism will be acknowledged but not acted upon.
NOTE: Don't overwrite the save files that say "Don't delete" for obvious reasons, I've made a folder with backup files for the first 3 options but future ones unlocked will be lost if overwritten.

Thankyou everyone and enjoy!

I've only got to level 4, but this game seems awesome, good job!

My only problem is the lag, especially when moving the red aim line.  'Dunno if it's the game or my computer though, depends on others' responses.

Computer definitely, the specification requirements for this game aren't very high especially since this is the only case of lag I've seen...

In any case, make sure you have no downloader programs running or any other programs that can be taxing on your CPU.

Also:
Pirates is also a commercial game made in 2004(or later) so you know, you can laugh at them for having the name too I guess...

Lol, well I have nothing against the name or your game for having the name, I just thought it was a funny coincidence.

This game is unbelievable fun. It's one of the few RPG Maker games I've picked up more than once.
Great job. You really oughta change that title though, seeing as there's two professional games called Pirates. (The PC one mentioned before and an NES one..)
