It's more than just competitive play. For a lot of people it's about trophy whoring and comparing (bragging).

I started using my steam account very recently and only have a few games on it (a couple I've downloaded and others that I haven't gotten around to yet) and I don't play nearly enough PS3 to have a million trophies (though I do have 100% in Skyrim, like that's hard to do) so if it's about the trophy whoring, I'm pretty pathetic too. =P
