Facesets for Children in RTP Style
« on: April 21, 2007, 01:01:23 PM »
I was just making a game for my three-year-old nephew when I realized that I have all of ONE face for young boys.  Same with girls, though that's less of a problem (my nieces are age-distinctive, but I have twin nephews plus their younger brother who was born within two days of his cousin).

I've been making a lot of recolored and cut-and-pasted kids for the RTP set, but I doubt I have the skill to make good facesets based on the RTP.  I would like to see someone who has the skill make some new faces in RTP style for kids.  Even cut-and-paste hair is great, so long as it looks pretty seamless.

Three possible choices here:

1. Expressions.  Now, if I get a face I like, I can later request for a set of expressions, or maybe make them myself, so that's low priority.  But each new boy's face having a different base expression might be a good thing.  That way a game with four such faces wouldn't look like the same guy wearing different wigs.  Still, it's low priority.

2. Skintone.  The kids in the RTP are Caucasian.  I'd love to see some black, brown, olive, red, or Asian kids.  I vaguely assume that the facial features would be a bit different, but I don't know whether that would be significant given this medium.  But I'd love to have, for example, a grinning little black girl with very short curly hair and maybe red ponytail holders or hairclips.  (I have a puppet of a girl like that in my Brite Music stuff, and she's always been my favorite.)

3. Hairstyle.  This is the most significant change, the most widely alterable, and the one that most matters to me (as all my nephews are Caucasian anyway).  So my basic request is for someone who can make distinctive hairstyles for the kids, or at least for the RTP boy.

I can recolor on my own, so haircolor isn't a big deal.  Blue is probably the best color to go with, since it's the direct opposite of skintone and therefore less likely to get confused with the pixels that represent skin (for when I recolor).  My basic hairstyle thoughts are these (though of course many more are possible):

1. Curly hair (along with a blue one I can recolor, I would love to see something that looks like light blond, almost white hair with the sun shining through it--you know that angelic hair some kids have?)

2. Buzz cut or crew cut (that is, short)

3. Wavy hair, perhaps a bit longer than the RTP boy

4. Braids a la Hollywood Indian boys... you know, where two braids drop down in front of the ears while the hair behind the ears falls down behind the shoulders

If anyone can do these, great! I love you!  Even just a small choice in faces would be great.

Additional possible choices: Girls' faces, of course.  And with my nephews who are twins, one is much thinner than the other (they were both premies), so maybe someone out there has the skill to make two little boy faces that are identical except for one being a bit thinner.  I except this would be very hard to pull off, and I don't really expect to see it done, but just putting it out just in case.

I don't think anyone has submitted a child faceset before. We rarely get faceset submissions period, actually.

Well, the children's base is there already, but we need more resources for a seperate section.

There doesn't appear to be a child's section; there is a child's head, but the eyes don't go with it.  And, in general, although I much enjoy the possibilities inherent in a generator, and I love browsing through the charset generator, the faceset generator is lacking in not only resources but quality of final product.  It may be the medium: The charsets deal with a quite limited palette and one piece doesn't affect nearby pieces, whereas with the facesets, shadows and highlights definitely affect each other, and the colors at play cover a much wider range.

Anyone around who actually can make RTP-style hand-made (non-generated) faces?  If there's no one here who has the skill, time, and inclination, then I'm just out of luck... not that it matters that much.

Without more resources than just a base head, we aren't going to make another section, but if you do find someone who makes child-specific facesets, inform them that we'd love for them to submit their stuff for consideration. :P

Wow, lonewolf, I totally forgot about those faces you posted!  I even saved them, too... but then, my filing system is horrible.  Thank you for reminding me about them!  Some of them look like I could use them for this project, even if they aren't exactly RTP style.

And Osmose, I realize that a child's section in the face generator would be tough and would require more resources.  I'm not asking for one; as I said, I don't think the quality is going to be that high.  Generators are very good for character sets, but not so hot when things get a bit more complex.  Eh well.
