Yay spoilers.

Actually, I made Balthier and pretty much everyone else use Greatswords. :P

FF12 was indeed about the war and not the characters. Certainly there was a bit of development - but most of it was the kind of stuff you didn't see - every so often you'd notice that Vaan was acting a little more mature or that Ashe was cozying up to Basch.

All of the romance was established in the beginning, except for Ashe and Basch due to the fact that she hates him at the beginning. The game realizes this, and moves on to more important things. There's a war going on, and quite frankly I'd rather hear more about the war and less about whether Penelo thinks that Vaan is handling the situation well and how it will affect their relationship and their plans for the future and blah de freaking blah.

What I got out of FF12 was this: Square made FF11. It was online, but the battle system was weak. It really made it difficult for a single person to get far without partying (Something I myself am not great at). So, they took that baseline, improved it into a very fun and entertaining system, and used it for FF12. They provided enough missions, sidequests, etc. to make just playing the game a very fun experience, regardless of the story. Not to say it wasn't a good story, but the gameplay really shined in comparison to the emphasis on story in past FFs.

I feel so behind... I've only played 1,2, parts of 7, beginning of 8, watched ending of 9, played the beginning of 12...

Gah, stretching.

Best: Zidane, ::SPOILERS:: He was a flirt, a battle stud and a soul harvester who was intended to destroy everything around him.

Worst: Edward, That spoony bard.

I almost wholeheartedly agree with you. They focused more on the gameplay instead of the storyline. The storyline wasn't bad, but it wasn't Matsuno's best either.

What I got out of the story was this. This is why we need our spoiler tags.  :p

*Spoilers

A bunch of gods decide one kingdom should rule a certain continent. They are not exactly evil, but instead more like parents. They do not approve of anything withouth their concent.
Two empires branch off of this middle kingdom, abandoning the gods. They each fight for the Middle Kingdom in order to free the world from the Gods. The problem is that they need to take over the world and kill people to do it.

I thought this storyline was pretty deep, focusing moreso on a central theme. I haven't really seen a storyline like this since FF7. I think this is just opinion, but I like a lot of unanswered questions.
-Where the gods actually gods or just black mage throwbacks? Also, they were machines. Who built them?
-The Gods were only there to stop humans from doing something stupid like creating a holocaust. To a certain extent, they're right. Should they still be there though?
-In Tactics Ogre, Ogre Battle, and FFTactics, countries beginning with Ro-are always the most powerful empire in the world, and yet you never see them. They are an empire, what's to stop them from taking over the over the world as well?
Everything focused on a theme of Freedom. I wish it was as complex as FFTactics or something, but I've never really seen a storyline this focused.

I'm being a big meanie to FF8 and Squall. I like the gunblade, and I liked his personality in Kingdom Hearts 1. Certain scenes I thought were wonderfully done, like when he danced with Rinoa and when he was rolling on his bed thinking.

I just like to see actual themes in storylines. While Squall fell in love with Rinoa, the game didn't really have a theme of love like it was portraying. It felt more like Romantic Ideology. The sorceresses were picked, persecuted, and sometimes murdered even though they were born with what they had. They just wanted to live in a Castle with their fairy tale prince. When they weren't massacring people, their story was kind of sad. They just missed that mark in FF8.

That's bizarre logic, lol.[/B]

I see nothing bizarre on it. Doglike creatures raping young ladies is what Japan has of it's finest.

Best: Zidane. He was such a cuttie!

Worse: ... ... Gogo for not showing "it's" idenity... >_> Everyone else is fine becasue they have a past ^^ ... besides Umaro. Cait sith sucks too, in a wiered, strange, cattatic (word?) way.

Zidane definetly.  I loved FF9 for all it was, and it is and will most likely remain one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.  Zidane had everything people wanted to be.  Very personal-like qualities if you know what I mean.  That entire cast just worked together so beautifully.  Zidane is by far the best frontman.

As for the worst main character, I'd say Squall.  He was way too quiet and anti-social.  I don't mind an anti-social character, but  I didn't think he had that much reason.  It was stupid IMO.

P.S.- Auron is the man.  Most badass FF character in my book.

Final Fantasy 11 is an online game. It doesn't really have a central character since you make your own.

For more information, go here:
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XI

I'm a little surprised that it wasn't released where you're from. I've never played it because I don't like montly fees. To be honest, who has actually played this game? I know Saikar is well respected at it but that's about it. It looks pretty too...

I can't play 11, i have dial up.

Damn it, stop giving spoilers for 12, I'm still playing it, well i just started playing it again last week. I have to skip so much in this thread :p I'm close to the end now, just doing all that side crap. Or mainly last night I just wandered around aimlessly and I ran into two espers  :viking:

And i think we're all forgetting someone, nameless warrior from FF1! Who else can beat the final boss right away at the beginning of the game?

I personally like the non human characters. I'm a human all day, how often can I be a horny red dog?

Hmm.

Auron was undeniably badass. You always forget how cool he is, and then you play FFX and he goes "this ends. Now" and you want his babies all over again.

I didn't like FFX-2, but I loved Paine. Best lesbian swordwoman ever.

Cait sith wasn't an amazing character, but his death was actually my second favourite bit of FF7 (I cried at his death first time, and grinned at Aeris's death, go figure)

Prplmage has FF12 pretty much summed up. I liked it, but it ended way too quickly without building up much substance.

danielturipa, my shoulder fanboy wants to stab you but the devil and angel are holding him back.
FF11 was an MMORPG which was apparently really addictive but that's not my field.
Next one to come out is FF13 which has the turn based battle system back (This isn't a good thing; I have a feeling they'll abuse this and have constant confusing FF-AC like battle sequences running behind the menu system, turning it into even more of an interactive movie, but who knows)

Erm, who else said stuff...

Apex, Edward was in my final party. I haven't of heard anyone else that used him XD

Balthier was the only character with a personality in FF12 so I guess he gets my vote there. After all, he was the leading man.

Balthier is hawt, I like him too... Edward wasn't that bad, just his romance part was ugh. Cecil was decent, he coulda used a bit more character tho. Auron is awsome. Squall is hawt too.. Celes is my favorite female character. I liked locke and Edgar (?) too. Freya was pretty kewl too.

Kuja and Kefka are the best bad guys me thinks. They made me laugh all the time <<

Best sub character, Vivi. He got this cool, completly normal boyish personality that makes him intresting unlike Vaan...
Nah and Vivi got a nice twist when you come to the village, when he hears about his kind "stopping" and all that.
(Still havenīt figured out if the blackmages in the end are Vivi's children or more manufactured ones... Hell I havenīt even understand how he has lived fro so long... He is a strong guy that little mage).

Best villian? Well, the only one (of the games I actually completed) that even had a reason was Seymour for wanting to end all suffering by becoming Sin... Kuja tried to do it for such an odd reason... Same with Sephiroth, nah Seymour had at least a "logical explaination" to why he wanted it and he never gave up, not even in death. Pretty bad at being evil though...

I just gotta say that Mid, you got quite some favorites there, not just one but a whole bunch hehe.

And yeah, FFXII could have been a lot longer, at the end when taht guy do thing in the FMV I though that the other evil guy would go all Grandall/Invicible(FFIX) on the place and absorb it so that he would be the last boss...
But no, the game ended there and now they are making some DS game with Vaan, Penello, Kites and a girl on a hovering skateboard that controls various armies of FF creatures, reminds me of Chocobo dungeon in a way...

And I heard that there will be two different FFXIII, one with a KH/DMC battle system and one that is a mix of the earlier FF games, letīs see when it comes.
