Video Game: Midi of the Week
« on: July 17, 2007, 08:47:09 PM »
I random idea off the top of my head. Basically we, the charas members, put up a selected midi that we enjoy listening to as a nomination. We then vote to see which one of the nominations you enjoy listening to the most. There will be the first place song and 2 "Runner-Up" songs.

RULES:
-- The selected songs for nominating MUST be from a video game and/or at least be created for a game. (Original music created for games is fine)

--The songs CANNOT be from a well-known video game. (ala final fantasy, chrono trigger/cross etc.) This rule is here to help promote the midi, to keep voting somewhat fair as well as making sure the most well known songs doesnt automatically get the most votes. (Because most people have already heard those song before.)

--Since this is fairly new, a member can nominate up to 2 songs for the first week. Once everything gets situated, only one song per member can be chosen as a nominee per week.

!!NEW!!
--No song longer then 3mins 30secs will be accepted. (This can be bypassed if the song loops. However the actually "loop" must be less then 3mins 30secs or else it will not be accepted.)

--You MUST provide a source. You can provide an author name, tell which game the song is from, link to the original author's webpage etc.. If you found the midi randomly off the net and can't provide any of the above, the song CANNOT be nominated. This rule is here is to provide some sort of evidence that the song was made for a game. (Unless you are the original author of the midi, NO you cannot use your own game as a source. You can bypass this by providing evidence of some sort (no screenshots) that the song IS in your game and you ARE using it appropriately.)

!!UPDATE!!
--You MUST provide a way for others to listen to the song. Simply selecting a midi without providing a link, download, w/e. Is not accepted. If you're having trouble finding a place to link your midi, you can upload it via Charas "Complete Resources" then linking to it.
VGMusic's "403 Forbidden" pages are allowed.

(NOTE: Since this is fairly new. I could update this with more rules as the contest goes on if necessary.)

(NOTE2: If you feel that a song a member has posted comes from a popular video game, PM me and we'll discuss it.)

!!NEW!!
(NOTE3: This thread is not limited to "Nominate posts only" If you would like to discuss about video game music in general, you will be allowed to. Anything beyond that is considered spam.)
--------------------------------------------------------

After the deadline date, a compiled list of all midis that are eligible to vote for will appear within this same post. At this time, you will be able to discuss which midi you think will win for the week. To submit your vote Private Message (PM) me, Rowan, with your selection. "DO NOT VOTE WITHIN THE THREAD!" That vote will not be accepted if that is done. All votes MUST be in by: Saturday July 28th 12:00 A.M EST" The winner will be announced during that same day at a later time. The winners will be featured and recorded in either a brand new Charas Wiki Page or a brand new forum thread. (Haven't decided yet >_>..). On July 29th (Sunday). A new voting week will commence with changed dates and a new thread.

--------------------------------------------------------
FAQs:
!!NEW!!
--Am I allowed to vote for my own file that I nominated?--
NO! The nomination phase consists of people who want to participate to go look for music they feel is of good quality. If self-voting was allowed, there's a chance of people who will just vote for their own song without listening to any of the others. Like I said, this contest is here to also help PROMOTE the MIDI. I want people to actually listen to other people song's.

--Why are you doing this?--
I feel that this forum could use some activity and fun events. Having small little events (towards games in general), could attract newcomers into staying with the community as well as being active.

--I think I found a song that is better then the one I chose. Can I switch it in before the nomination deadline date?
If you found another song that you feel is better then the one you nominated, feel free to edit and update your post containing the song. DO NOT create a new post. If you do this, the new song will NOT be eligible for nomination until you do it the correct way. You WILL NOT be able to change your song by the nominee deadline date. (July 24th, 6:00 P.M. EST for this round.)

--If my song doesn't win one week, can I renominate the song during another week?
Yes you can. However, this still counts as towards your "One song a week per member" rule.

--How do I check and see if this song is NOT popular enough?--
This may not be accurate but a good way is to go to either www.gamefaqs.com or www.gamespot.com, and search the game up within their respective search engines. Next, select that game's message board. Now if that game's message board is filled with 40+ (or w/e) pages of threads all about the game, chances are that game is too popular.

!!NEW!!
--What is actually being judged?--
What is being judged is whether or not a song is qualified for nomination. Judges will check that each midi and each member abide by the rules. During the voting phase, Judging commences of tallying each qualified vote. The judges are also responsible for recording each weeks winners via charas wiki or a thread dedicated to recording. Judges can also submit nominations but will still have to abide by the rules like everyone else.

!!NEW!!
--Can I be a judge?--
In order to qualify for being a judge you must have over 300 posts, and have been registered with charas for over 6 months. You also must be VERY active (since this is a weekly thing.) If you feel that you want to be a judge PM me with a small little resume consisting with a reason (or reasons) on why should I choose you as a judge and a overall reason on why you want to be a judge. I'm not strict. This doesn't have to be a 1 page essay (not even a paragraph). A couple of sentence will do just fine.

--Why only MIDIs?--
Cause there are plenty of VERY good contests dedicated to those of the MP3 format. There is hardly (if any (outside of VGMusic)) contests dedicated solely towards MIDIs. This will enable those with SERIOUS speed issues to participate in the contests as well.

--Will there be any more updates to the rules?--
Since this is fairly new, there's a good chance of updates. Please check back often for new rules until things get situated and organized.

--ROFL!! This is stupid and such a waste of time! LOLLERS!--
Then don't participate nor post. I saved you time for posting this.  Any comments related as such will be treated as SPAM.

Current Judges: (3 Max NOT including myself.)

===============================

Again, Since this is fairly new. I could update this with more rules as the contest goes on if necessary as long as people are interested in participating. Do not be shy with this, EVERYONE can participate :).

Oh, you can go ahead and start nominating right now. :) Good luck!

So we just pick a midi from say VGMusic as long as it's not famous?

I've got three choices in mind.

You can start now if you please. The voting will commence on Tuesday the 24th at 6:00 P.M. EST. NO more songs can be nominated after that time. Afterwards we will find out the winners sometime next Saturday. :)

Good luck on finding appropriate and excellent quality Midi's :).

Dammit Osmose beat me to it. :P

Nevertheless here are my two songs. You said two to start until this gets big.

Ragnarok Online: Streamside
http://www.vgmusic.com/music/computer/microsoft/windows/Streamside.mid

Valkyrie Profile: Through a Thin Haze
http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sony/ps1/Through_A_Thin_Haze.mid

My links have been forbidden, so...you'll have to retrieve the songs yourself to listen to them.

Valkyrie Profile has some of the best music I have ever heard.  As such, I nominate Fighting the Shadowy Gods for MIDI of the week.

I'd like to be a judge, if possible. I've got nothing better to do. Also, I don't play many video games, so I can't really benefit those midis from popular games.

Well, here's a couple.

Gundam Wing: Endless Duel: Airbase Stage
http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/snes/airbase.mid
Wings of Fury: Title Screen
http://www.vgmusic.com/music/computer/commodore/commodore/wing_of_fury_main_titles.mid

Same Gist as About's links. They say they're forbidden, but there's links in the forbidden pages that lead to the actual songs.

I have a nomination.

Streets of Rage 2 - Ending Theme (Composed by Yuzo Kojiro I believe).
http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sega/genesis/Streets_of_rage_2_-_Ending_Theme.mid

The MP3 version sounds much better, but this is a MIDI contest. ^_^
