Drifter
« on: September 03, 2007, 10:05:24 PM »
Premise:

Years ago, Earth’s scientists discovered a planet not unlike our own in a neighboring galaxy. The planet seemed to be our owns exact duplicate, so it was named Gemini. Astronauts were sent to the planet as “peace bringers,” though their real mission was recon on this planet. The research showed that Gemini contained beings of a superior height, physical form, and intelligence to our own citizens. Concerned that these beings might try to start a war, Earth, determined to remain the more intelligent of all life forms, created a device that could absorb Gemini, and send it into another dimension. The device was launched shortly after development, and did it’s job well. The device created a black hole-like anomaly that sucked up Gemini, and disappeared shortly after. Earth thought it was rid of Gemini’s inhabitants. However, there were survivors. One hundred thousand warriors of magic and swords stormed Earth’s surface, led by the Knight Grisalmoore, and proceeded to destroy everything they could. Somehow, without Earth ever finding out how they did it, the Gemini Remnants detonated every nuclear missle we had, turning Earth into a wasteland. Before the Heradon Kingdom fell victim, it managed to trap Grisalmoore and his eight generals in magic circles called GRANs (Gemini Remnant Astral Neutralizers). The other Gemini Remnants fell from either the nuclear gasses or from defeat from the humans.

It’s four hundred years since this event, and Earth is in no better shape. Forests have returned, and water has been safe to drink for decades. However, Earth is still covered in desert plains with three major kingdoms, ten major cities, and twenty two villages remaining. The human population, as you can tell, is low. The nuclear gasses have caused all kinds of catastrophe such as the dead reanimating, animals becoming more humanoid, some animals gaining the traits of others, and even more odd occurrences. Very few people are brave enough to leave civilization to explore alone without anyone to aid them. These people follow the beat of their own drum in this world caused by jealousy and fear. They are called Drifters.

Story:

You play as Jet, a young orphan drifter who makes his living raiding ruins for treaure, doing odd jobs, and even bounty hunting. While on a job, he finds that his mark is standing at a GRAN, and the GRAN shatters, a Knight standing where it once did. The Knight kills the mark, and flys off. Jet, not caring, just cuts off the head of the mark and walks off to return for his bounty, claiming he killed him.

Not long after the Knight is released, and increase in hostile activity from animals starts to concern the world's kingdoms. Without any idea of what's happeneing, they figure it has to do with the eight GRANs remainaing. So the Kingdom's come to an agreement and send troops to each gate. After hearing from one battalion that a GRAN is destroyed, the kingdoms enter a panic. Soon, they hear from another battalion that a Blue Knight destroyed the other gate, then the Blue Knight and the new released Mage flew off without destroying the troops. This Blue Knight is undoubtedly Grisalmoore, and he seems to be freeing his Generals...but why?

Important Characters:

Jet
A drifter who will discover that he is the only one on Earth who can stop Grisalmoore
Age: 21
Weapons:
- Long Range: Sigma Rah 8A/V3 (One-handed Machine Gun)
- Short Range: Desert Light Cleaver
Bio: Jet is a pessimistic person who cares not for anyone else but himself. He gets the job done the fastest and easeiest way without questioning fate. If something requires a lot of work, he'll do it, but he likes being heavily compensated for it. He's been an orhpan for only six years, so he's relatively new to the drifting life, but he seemed to have a natural talent for it. His Sigma Rah was his father's favorite gun, and he stole the Cleaver off of a dead body, and cleaned it up a little. He prefers trasure hunting to bounty hunting, as despite his cold exterior, hates killing human beings unless he has to. Throughout the game, his personality will undergo subtle changes.

Grisalmoore
A Knight from another world who wants revenge for the entrapement of his world.
Age: 443 (Includes the years trapped in the GRAN)
Weapon: Sword of Treknah
Bio: Grisalmoore was a family man on his planet. He had a loving wife and two kids, one of which had a kid of their own, making this Knight a proud grandfather. However, after being sent on a mission, he returned to see that his home was gone. Knowing that Earth had recently sent people to "visit," he put two and two together. He and his army attacked Earth, and were eventually defeated after sending Earth to a post-apocalyptic state. After being released by Frederick Van Duran, he killed the thug and set off to release his Generals. What is it he's planning?

Conen
A mysterious person whom helps Jet through a lot of the game. He appears to have is own motives for doing so.
Age: It's a secret *shhhhhh*
Weapon: Uses his mind to create all types of weapons from nothing; Prefers to create Scythes
Bio: Not much can be revealed about this character. He is the first of his unique race, of which there is only one other. He race is created a special way. The mixing of DNA causes the one of that race to have random genetics that seemingly match up. How it's achieved is unknown. Oddly...he can enter the Altar state like Jet and Grisalmoore can.

More characters to come later...

Planned Features:

Custom Battle System

- Altar, a state similar to trance that grants Jet different attacks depending on the range mode he's set on and the skill set equipped. This mode will last three turns. During this time, besides the skills changing, he will have a different appearance. Altar is a key plot point in Drifter.

- Range Mode is a system in the game that allows you to switch between short range and long range. Enemies in the game will be vulnerable to different ranges. All flying enemies are vulnerable to long range, as are dragons and shelled enemies. Humans are weak against short range, as are most beasts. Other than those types any weapon will do. You WILL have to relaod your gun if you're out of ammo, and you will have to purchase ammo for your gun.

- You will only control one character throughout the game, but the battles will not be boring because of it. There will be times that you have to switch modes to win against a boss. One boss, Mandragora, has a jewel trapped in it's bud as a weak point. If you get close while the buds closed, you'll be interrupted by the spiked roots/tentacles, so you must for from afar, then strike the exposed jewel with your sword.

Custom Menu System

- The menu contains Supply, Tecnic, Tecnic Set, Range, Status, Save, Exit, Quit

- In the menu, you ill be able to switch range modes, and equip different Tecnic Sets.

Tecnic Sets

- Tecnic sets are different skill sets that you can gain within the game. They include: Physical, Buff, Debuff, Mental, Elemental, Nonelemental, and others.

Now, for a game like this, I will need some help, as I've posted in the request forum, which everyone seems to be reading and ignoring. I am in need of two spriters, one for charsets/battlers for the CBS and another for facesets/portraits for the Custom Message System.

C&C appreciated

How about a Q: What happened to your other RPG? I was anxious to see my character's boss fight.....
Although this one looks good too.

It was honestly going no where. I tried spriting on my own while waiting for MIC's sprites, but it was a no go, and his never came, so I stopped.

I like this one better, though. ^^

Wow, nice dude. The only problem I really have with it is the spontaneity of the events. Its sort of "And it happens" kind of thing. Maybe instead of fearing war just to fear it, the race of Genesis had begun to revolt at what they saw of the people of Earths subtle monopolization of their world, Lenin and the Blosheviks (I'm pushing at that comparison but you get it). They gained enough members to start the revolt, and fearing a war THEN we sent them off. Plus it would take FAR more than 400 years for the nuclear fallout of a simultaneous nuclear strike of every nuke in the world to allow anything at all to live.

Perhaps they attacked to try to take Earth as their new home, and so used our weapons like scuds, guns, bombs, viruses, tech and such as weapons, but in order to preserve the planet refrained from nukes. Then have a War of the Worlds type thing where they were poisoned by some trace element in our air (like N or whatever) that we don't require to breathe but wasn't present in theirs.

Don't get me wrong with the ideas though, it's a solid idea, but the details are just funky. But its your game so whatever you wanna do man.

Thanks man.

The fear goes a little deeper than how I described it.

The fear is Earth thinking:

"They're more advanced...they're superior....just overall better than us. If they see that, then they may see us as obsolete. If they see us as...as obsolete, then they'll do away with us. Well, we can't let that happen. If they know that we know that, then they'll surely try to destroy us. We have to destroy them first. That's it, yeah. We'll just have to destroy them before they understand how inferior they are"

I see what you mean by the simultaneous Nuclear detonation, and that's something I'm currently reworking. I'm steering towards that in response to us destroying life, they'll make us suffer and destroy what's giving us life. That would cause the destruction of forests and tainting of water and etc. The War of the World thing is good, but I'm thinking that would be too easy to identify it to the actual movie/book, so I figured out this way. But if worse comes to worse, that's the route I'll take.

Thanks for the input man.

I'd like to sprite for you - which I've never done for anyone before - your game deeply interests me.  I think I'm technically well at spriting - nothing that looks RTP - I did a custom Naruto sprite - I had another one a full set but something came over me and it accidently got deleted - but it let me learn about creating a good sprited facial structure.  Whatever - I'd like to - help - give me details and I'll sprite something custom chara-sets.

Right now I'm working on Terranigma's Ark - for my own game - apparently what the creators did was have arm-less body's and attach different set of arms for different actions - which I thought was an ingenius idea.

Attached is my Naruto sprite - which I look now at and can do better:

Well, do you think you could do sprites in a Rudra's Treasure style?

http://img489.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture037qy71uk2.jpg

That's the character. Ignore the marksin his face, I didn't erase.

Hair brown, the drap thingy tan, shirt black, pants blue, boots green

If you can't get it like Rudra's treasure, than get as close as you can.

Attached is a sample of Rudra's Treasure's style.

I show you something tonight and see if you like it - I've never done graphics in the style of ff3 or rudra - I'll work off your character sketch.

if you use rpg maker '00, no need for battlers.

This is a truly awesome idea. Only problem I have with it is the kingdoms thing. its the future, why not some sort of communism, or a confederation or something? kingdom and space travel just doesn't sit right with me.
