So... I'm trying to make a game.
« on: March 09, 2008, 12:40:27 AM »
Hi there. I'm Suzuricho, and like the title states, I'm trying to make an RPG with RPGM2K. I had 2003 and XP, but I was so frustrated trying to get things to work right, I thought it'd be best if I just went with what I knew... somewhat.

Now, I started this project waaaaaay back in August or something like that, since I was preggers and I wanted something to do with my time. Now my little one is four months old and I can work on the computer while she just mumbles at me, so I have a bit more time than I did before. So I started it again today. Yay.

I am the only one working on my project, as it will be a present for my friends - who are actually the stars of the game, as lame as that may sound. I've known about Charas for quite some time, I just didn't decide to join until today pretty much out of fear of rejection by the community. I am using the original RTP package mostly on an outdated software that's horribly translated. I look like I was supposed to be submitting the stuff I'm doing back when I was still in high school... Oh, if only I knew about RPGM stuff back then!

Anyway!

The game hasn't a title yet, but our band's name is "Buster Beckett" (we have a website at www.busterbeckett.com too), so I'm going to either make that the title, or make something else with it.

Story: Randi, an eccentric baker of Bulch, has been having nightmares involving her best friends and the King of Whistersnivet - something about a Forlorn War. The King has launched a despirate attack on all revenue in his kingdom. Every store in his lands either hands over 95% of their profits to him for taxes, or is destroyed... Randi and two customers are almost destroyed with her Starlight Bakery, if it weren't for a ninja that happened by. The ninja offers to take them to a safe spot, Eric's casino, to find out that his entire place was kicked around by the military. Exactly what is driving the king? Is it really just greed? (SPOLIER: No, it isn't.)

Characters (that have all ready shown up as of programming now):

Randi
Female, 22
Our main protagonist, Randi is loud and opinionated. She weilds a spatula and other cooking utensils in battle, as she says she's too weak to fight with anything else. Her vibrant expressions are a bright additions to anyone's day. All she wants to do is cook and love on her husband, but if someone or something wants to interfere with that, she's got another thing coming for them!

Eric
Male, 29
Eric loves to gamble. He even fights with items known for gambling such as dice, cards, and darts. He is laughable, lovable, tolerant, and understanding. When it comes down to it, he's also not that bad of a battle mage, but he doesn't like fighting. Eric is a pacifist until something motivates him to do otherwise. As it stands, all he's ever wanted is a peaceful life with his wife.

Heather
Female, 25
One of Randi's most notorious customers that visits Bulch just for her Chocolate Cake, Heather fights with a spear. She's dark skinned, which has some bad favor in parts of the main continent. She's also a fangirl of certain people, but she doesn't spread it everywhere around like Randi would. She's supportive and upbeat - a big sisterly type of woman.

Ralph
Male, 18
A ninja with a goal: to assassinate the king. He is quick to insult, has a hair trigger, but shows deep affection for his older sister, Randi. He begs her to leave the continent in fear of worse events, just so he doesn't have to "rush in and save your ***." His disdain of maltreatment of his family leads him to pull some very hairbrained stunts without thinking.

Linz
Female, 25
Heather's best friend that often follows to Randi's bakery. She's usually clueless, but she's not a bad swordfighter. Her past is shrouded with mystery, or she wants to make it seem that way. She often copies the fangasms Randi and Heather have just because she wants to be accepted by the only other girls she's ever been friends with. She's lonely on the inside, but she won't admit it.

There are more characters, of course. I just don't have them in yet.

Anyway, I've been abusing the charas creation system on this site for this and other gaming projects. But what I've programmed is using just the RPGM2K RTP and the packet of extras that I found with it. Not an original battle system, but every item is uniquely mine. I have fun with programming items!

You are more than welcome to give ideas or offer support. I just wanted to finally tell someone about what I'm working on. A full, finished game could take me years. I only work on it when my husband's at work and when the baby is sleeping or able to play by herself in her little pen.

*sigh* Big post.

Welcome. I'll eat you with marinaded chicken and lettuce in lightly toasted Pita bread.

Game looks good so far. Sounds nice and free from the usual perfectionist stresses. Keep it up :)

Post some screenshots of what you have so far using the print screen button, that always helps.

It sounds like you like the Turkish sandwich - the doner. I wouldn't mind being a part of that sandwich. Heh heh!

I can't be a perfectionist, I'd die of frustration if I were.  I'd rather spend my time just working with what I know, catching what I can (I test play A LOT), but if I don't get it and it's something small, I usually don't go back and change it. It annoys a lot of my friends, but when I want to get a project done, I have to actually do it - not just nitpick over the fact that I'm human and can't do every single thing perfectly.

I'll post a few of those screenies when I get the chance. You've all ready answered my question about how to get them.

I forgot to add that I'm trying to program a custom accessory creation system! My main character collects and carries plushies with her - and she gains special abilities through them, and Eric knows of her adoration for them, so he is always trying to make more of them. The first one is (of course) Suzuricho, a plush that I have in real life. Suzuricho is a spirit fairy of high intellect, so having him with her raises her intellect in battle. This is based on a real life psychological condition that I have... I'm the only one I know that has this strange problem.

Only problem is I'm trying to figure out exactly how to make a custom item creation system - blacksmithing makes hardly any sense.

Good luck with this, Screenshots are usually the best way to get some oppinions on the game though.

Well, keep it up and I'm looking forward to hear how it's going.

Either you're hiding how much you've done on the game, or you haven't done enough to start a game thread. :\  I like the characters, especially that they're not the cookie cutter characters most games have (seventeen year old sword master orphan) but my biggest problem at the moment is their names.  They're very generic @.@
