(Noob) Make a character jump

making a mario type game like a sidescrolling one and i want mario to be able to jump over things my first guess would be making an event that is autostarted and then have a switch to make mario jump. My dilemma is that i wanna bind the switch to a key not to an event.

and also a small explanation on how events work.
