PC Battery myth
« on: April 16, 2008, 11:21:32 AM »
Okay, I'm confused...

Lately, Chi (who's more than a year old now) hasn't been lasting that long when she's unplugged--her battery, which used to last about an hour and a half, now only lasts about an hour.

A friend of mine claims that the more you use a laptop's battery (that is, unplugged), the shorter it's going to last. My uncle, though, thinks the opposite is true--that the longer you keep a laptop plugged, the more overcharge the battery will suffer, thus lessening the duration of the battery.

Which theory is true?

You named you laptop? moreover you come to charas while reffering to it like so?

A battery loses power over each recharge... that for regular little batteries tho

Yeah, I named my laptop.

Anyway, what I'm truly worried is, will keeping my laptop plugged in make it last less in the long run?

using your laptop in general will cause your battery to **** out.

Im under the firm inpression that its a money making sceme. Usually by the time you battery is near useless for more then a half hour, that particular model of better is no longer in production, and a new one will cost in the low hundreds.

From what I've heard, the best way to maintain your battery's life is to use it while unplugged, run the battery down until it's totally flat, and then recharge it to full power. That's a hassle though, so generally nobody bothers.

I just change my power plan thing to "power save" whenever I'm unplugged, and "high performance" when plugged in. As of yet, I've not experienced any loss in battery life.

I have a laptop, but never use it as such. I've got an external monitor, ext speakers, keyboard, etc. She's just small.

I named mine DelLouise. Obviously named after Dom DeLuise, so it's not that bad.

I have no idea actually, have never heard either of those. but you'll know something's wrong if your computer yells "PANTIES".
My laptop's name is Grimoire, because my brother was playing dirge of Cerberus and I thought it was hilarious that Vincent's dad was named after a book of nefarious spells and such. Very hilarious, so now this is my little book of evil. ^^

Because the things it does are so awesome you have trouble understanding them?

Or because it has a slightly amusing accent?

Um yeah it dies. I believe keeping it plugged in all the time kills it, because my battery use to go almost two hours and now only lasts for about six minutes.

But honestly that happens with most batteries. ><*

Right, thanks!

I've also noticed that, even if Chi is plugged in, and the battery is almost dead, the battery won't recharge. I need to move the cable around to a certain position for it to work properly.

Should I buy another (admittedly expensive) cable?

If you're moving the cable around it could be the laptop's socket, not the cable. You should test that somehow before you fork out for the thing.
