Pokemon Hunter
« on: April 27, 2008, 03:31:51 AM »
Okay, the first guy who posted this was bogus, so here's the real deal!

Pokemon Hunter

Premise:

The other guy said it was a game about killing Pokemon, but that's a little off the mark.  You see, Pokemon is a very unique RPG series that satisfies peoples needs of throwing metallic objects at various forms of wildlife.  But what if it weren't such a unique game?  What if it were just a normal fantasy-style RPG, with heroes, in-depth plots, and the Pokemon were just the enemies/bosses you fought along the way?  That, my friends, is the essence of Pokemon Hunter.

In short, it's not a Pokemon game, but a game with Pokemon in it.  If Pokemon were a normal game like other RPGs, this is what it would be like.

...probably.

Systems:

This game doesn't have any custom systems.  It uses the DMS and a modified DBS.  The mod is what makes the special skillz Metronome, Mirror Move, and Destiny Bond take effect.  Other than that, it's everything you would expect from RM2K's DBS.  And, please note, that's RPG MAKER 2000, NOT 2K3.  None of that ridiculous ATB garbage.

Spoiler-Free Plot:

Baise Town.  Your average, run-of-the-mill town.  It's nestled into an area with many diverse terrains.  It's near an ocean, a forest, a mountain...even some ancient ruins!  It's a little out of the way, but that's what the folks there like about it.  Above all other things, the area surrounding the town is peaceful as can be.  Life is easy and carefree.  Until one day...

All at once, without warning or explanation, the local fauna began to attack villagers.  Their numbers were so great that many fled the town while most holed up in their houses.  The town fell under siege, and the Mayor sent for help.  The answer came in the form of a capable hunter, named Eli...

The Cast:

There are a lot of characters in the game, but it mostly focuses around:

Eli:  The main hero.  You start out playing as him.  He's a powerful swordsman, but also a capable healer.  Balancing his offensive attacks with his defensive healing skillz is key.

Phat T.:  A thief Eli meets early in the game.  He's multitalented, so he can use any of the game's weapons.  His main abilities are all offensive, so he's best just going all out.  Since he has no particular specialties, he's a perfectly balanced hero.

Lilith:  A female archer also met early on.  She's capable with a bow, but can't use any other weapon types.  She can also cure many status problems.  As she levels up, she learns more skillz that cure different status effects.  She's also the fastest hero, so having her use healing items instead of Eli casting healing skills might be a good idea.

Farris:  A wizard met a little later in the game.  He fights with all manner of staff-like weapons.  He's not particularly strong, and he can't hold shields, either.  His two specialties are his powerful mind and ability to revive fallen comrades.  This skill is invaluable, but it only works 3/4 of the time, and Farris is the slowest of all the heroes.  Pair that with his low HP and lacking defense, and all of a sudden things aren't quite so easy.

The World:

The game is divided into 8 areas of ascending difficulty.  Each area has three sub-areas, with two puzzles in each one.  By "puzzle" I mean "anything that makes getting from point A to point B more difficult than just walking there."  The final area has a few more puzzles than the previous seven, making for 20 puzzles in all.  This is excluding sidetrips, though.  All in all, this makes for roughly 24 different places to explore.  Yes, this game is huge.

The Beasts:

As the game's title may suggest, almost all the beasties are Pokemon.  The game includes 69 of them, and they all have distinct move sets.  I arranged a setup that guarantees that the beasts will rise in difficulty, regardless of the order in which they are placed in the game.  For example, a Caterpie in area 4 will always be stronger than a Charizard in area 2.  As screwy as that might seem, it makes for a decent and progressively challenging game.

The Skillz:

The magic system is unique in that the heroes can pick up all of the skillz that the enemies use against them.  They find skill books within the areas where the beasts appear, and reading them will teach special attacks.  It's possible to beat the game without any enemy skillz, but it is much easier to do with them.  The books are all well-hidden secrets, but definitely worth tracking down.

Guarded Secrets:

Occasionally, the beasts you're fighting will evolve in the middle of battle.  It's a rare occurence, but it can really stir things up.  Even more interesting is the 1/50 chance of an evolved beast dropping a useful rare item.

At the end of the game, the player is given a completion rating, based on how many books they found and sidetrips they completed.  A rating of 100% earns them a special surprise...

All the series' game downloads are through that link.  On the actual download page, scroll to the bottom for the actual download link.

In Conclusion:

That's about all there is to it.  And yeah, I know, the game uses *ugh* RTP.  But you shouldn't let that stop you from trying it out.  Believe me, I am well aware of the appearance of an RTP Pokemon fan game, but this is one of those odd cases where looks don't mean a thing.  I polished this game until it shined, and I've never heard a bad word about it (except from people who'd never actually played it before.)  So, I encourage you, don't just dismiss this as another crappy newb fan game.  Try it out, you might be surprised.  And it's only 7.5 MBs, so it won't take that long to download...

Whatever you decide to do, have fun!  And give feedback, no one ever does.

Well, I'm not to fond of the "I can't se my own heroes" thing, that kinda brings me down.

And well, you mix the menu sprites of pokemon with the RTP wich I suppose will work as long as it looks bright and happy. But those pokes in the dungeon didn't seem to fit in as well as Charizard did.

And what more... Erhm, was that Strong Bad in one of the screenshots?

I must unfurtunable say that I won't download this, memories of Pokemon Blood will remain forever and I doubt that there will be a better non-classic pokemon game ever.

I'm sorry halibabica, but with RTP graphics, the defualt rm2k battlesystem and a titlescreen that makes me regret I woke up this morning ...This isn't looking particularly awesome.

Close...it's Stinkoman, the only cameo aside from all the Pokemon.  He's just a recurring miniboss, and doesn't really play a significant role.

Looks can be deceiving.  It's bad paradigms like those that I try to challenge with games like this.  As I said, I know how bad this looks, but I can almost guarantee you would not regret trying this game.  And what don't you like about the title screen?

I see.

The problem I have with your title screen is that it's a default aswell, and that it says RPG-blahblah-2000 in the lower right corner. I also don't like how the pokemon font and the hunter-font doesn't match, but I guess that's a matter of taste.

Also, I admire how you took my criticism. I thought maybe I was a little too ruthless for your own good. But you accepted it in a good way, instead of starting to shout at me like many others probably would, and for that I'll promise to give this a chance despise of how the graphics may look. :)

This game is pretty fun. I think (and probably many others) the game would be a tad but funner  (maybe alot funner who knows) if we could see our characters in the battle. I dont know how it would make people react or if it would make the game funner or more boring. One more thing, are you in the progress of making pokemon hunter 2? cuz this game is fun. It would be kinda cool to see a sequal. If you are or already did make pokemon hunter 2 could you pot the download link somewhere or send me the link at bahumat0527@yahoo.com
It would be appreciated.

Thanks.  Yes, there is a sequel, and it's already released at GamingW.  I'll post it here later, because I want to see how this goes over first.

As for being able to see the heroes, it's not a normal function of RM2K's DBS, so I'd have to do some tricky script work to make them appear.  So, that ain't happening.  Get to know them through their dialogue.

You can change the game for ATB to Turn-based ones in 2K3.

The main site's been down since 2005.  They're working on a new one, but it's been delayed countless times.  The community's still alive, just homeless.  There's also a sister-site in the works called Gamecake that's going to be for submitting games, but that's still in beta.
