A dark time for resources?
« on: August 31, 2008, 08:36:31 PM »
So it's been a while since I've looked up RM resources online, but I was just looking around it seems like all the places I used to use are down or gone. Phanx Games is switching sites and is temporarily down, The RM2k3 Resource Library has exceeded its bandwidth limit and the RPG Advocate site which I'm pretty sure used to have all the Phylomortis games on it seems to have just completely disappeared. And as we know, even we are experiencing difficulties with our resource section. Though I'm not sure if everything that's missing is gone forever, I know that currently we've lost tons of resources online.

Has anyone else noticed this? What are you doing to deal with it? I'm personally just digging through all the stuff I already have.

If I ever need a resource, I either make it myself or google the japanese words to the resource I need. Japanese material is always better in quality.

I'd share some site, but I really don't feel like having the material get to popular with... you know... the nubz.

Hmm... Good point. And I just noticed we didn't lose any resources on CR. I must've been thinking of somewhere else. However, those sites I mentioned are all down. Chipsets are the main problem for me. That's usually all I ever have trouble with, especially now.

Phylomortis is dead too, and from talk in other places, it looks as though it may be staying that way. Shame, I got a lot of my good stuff there. We're one of the last bastions of RPG Maker stuff.

If I need resources, I just find something that's pretty close to what I want, and then edit it to get it spot-on. Saves time.

Yeah.  That could explain why we could be getting more people recently.

You know, alot of pepole came here for the CR. Thats how I found charas orginaly.
I came for resources and help, and stayed for the talk. Our CR is the bigest out there, if we lose it, it could mean less members..We must preserve it. If only there was a way to back it up.

These are dark days for RPGMaker in general. It's getting to be a pretty old program.
People are losing interest.

That's because that's not Phylomortis, it's a backup which was taken shortly before it died. The actual site is long gone.

We need to get around to cleaning it up. We have a lot of poor quality resources mixed in there, and we have no keywords to help with searching. Sure we wouldn't have an arseload of resources, but we'd be left with high quality stuff that people would come here for.

Yeah, I remember a conversation a while back with some members (I forget who, some of the older members). The question raised was why poor quality resources are allowed. The answer was that they couldn't just deny someone resources simply because they didn't look very good.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand I agree. On the other hand I doubt we need 2,000 edits of RTP Alex or Goku takin' up bandwidth and hiding all the actual custom resources. Maybe if it was a strictly custom resources only policy(there could be exceptions for rips, mainly monster rips) maybe that would solve a few things.

Either way, to clean up the complete resources would take a damn long time and a lot of effort.

We've been planning it for a while, but we need the CR finished first. First we need to sweep through and delete everything that fails hugely. Then we need to add better descriptions and keywords for the remaining stuff. It'll take a while, but it'll be worth it.
