How can I speed up my coputer for free?

My computer is driving me nuts. It can't even buffer a small file. When i'm on the internet my open windows keep crashing saying: "This program is not responding." Can anyone tell me how to make my computer faster and fix my problem? It's itnerupting my PMing on this site as well.

Other than that, all I can really tell you is to anti-virus your computer and delete old crap

Go through all your programs, delete **** you don't use.

And also, the last time I had a problem like this, it turned out it was a virus. Got myself a nice, good quality anti-virus, found and disposed of the virus... It made a full recovery. Works like a charm now. (Mind you, that computer is like, 8 years old.)

And if it's not a virus, like I said before. Clean everything up, get rid of stuff you don't use.

And, er, if you go through these steps and it's still running slow, you might want to consider:

A) Get a new computer
B) Upgrade your current computer

Happy trails, and lets hope you don't have to resort to those last two steps.

How do I defrag? And what excatly does that do? It won't destroy my files, will it?

I'll have to take a look, but I think I have disk cleaner.

I'm currently in the process of deleting everything that's pretty much useless now. And by the way I can't resort to those last two steps as i'm dirt poor, Seriously i'm not joking.

When I read the thread title, I thought you were referring more to speeding up your computer in a gaming perspective... Heh. For something like that, you'd do a little something called Overclocking. For your problem, this is definitely not what you want to do, as it can be quite risky, and is done often very specifically in a gaming sense.

The last time I used Fire fox, it nearly destroyed m internet. I could try though, can it be a secondary browser? I don't wan't to lose my own.

Thanks but I can't take any risks with this computer as it may have to last a good while, and besides anything with Over in the title can't be good for a computer in general.

I just reccommended Firefox because I've always used it and it's never given my any problems, no viruses, spyware, and like, 1 popup per month. But IE seems to have a problem with this, and uses a crazy amount of memory.
