Orc & Impy: The Great Escape

ORC & IMPY: THE GREAT ESCAPE

Life isn't easy when you're a low level monster. Sure, heroes have it real cushy, the gil, the girls, the glory. Even the boss gets to have a little fun before he's inevitably dealt four kinds of death by the hero's party.
But what about the guys in between? What about those faceless, countless, thankless, dungeon-filling minions? Who's there to congratulate you when you actually manage to knock out the priest character? Who's there to pat you on the back when your encounter is like, so random? No-one, that's who. When you're little more than a speck of vaguely sentient cave-debris, the most anyone ever sees in you is a quick XP boost. Face it, no-one's even gonna go up a level on you.

Orc and Impy are two monsters who aren't gonna stand for this sh*t anymore. There's a whole world out there that they're missing out on. There's only so much one does for a good dental plan, and waiting around in a nondescript room until some jock-boy arsehole comes to slay you is not one of them.

There's only one problem. If the "chosen" heroes find it difficult to get through the dungeon, you can bet your sweet tusks that two beasts with the combined IQ of a lemon sorbet aren't gonna find it easy. They'll have to combine thier powers to get out of here alive.

Orc & Impy is a puzzle/platformer game. It can be played with two people but, honestly, you'd probably find it just as easy to play alone. Orc and Impy have distinctly different abilities and must compensate for each other's failings.

ORC
HEAVY: All those greasy chocobo legs means that Orc is overachieving, weight-wise. If you encounter a weight-activated button, only Orc will be able to press it.
*SMASH: Some problems need to be solved the old fashioned way, with a fist. See something that looks breakable? There's only one way to find out.
*SHIELD: When he wants to be, Orc can be as sturdy as a dam. With this ability, Orc can block certain moving objects from going their path.
*TOUGH SOLES: Orc is the kind of guy who thinks "exfoliating" means killing plants. Use this ability to walk fearlessly on spiked floors.

IMPY
NIMBLE: DOUBLE JUMP: After Orc, gravity is Impy's best friend. He can jump twice as high as his buddy, allowing him to get to hard-to-reach areas.
*SPIT: Considered disgusting even by his peers, Impy's spitting ability is unmatched. Use it to hit far-off targets.
*HIDE: That knight just got his sword blessed by the Seer of San'tedyth. They don't give that **** out for free. Face it, there's only one way you're gonna pass him alive, and that's hiding behind a bush. In a hole.

COFFIN
You'll find these scattered around levels. At first they'll seem apparantely useless, but if you should be so careless as to let Orc or Impy perish, you'll need to track one of these down and smash it to bring them back. Be cautious, however, for if you die searching for one, it'll be curtains for you.

KNIGHT
They're not the brightest of the bunch, it has to be said, but who needs mental dexterity when you can cleave a cupboard in two with a sword? They'll pace left and right across their area in search of monsters to kill, and if they spot you, they'll go beserk. Best to stay out of their way.

ARCHER
Patience is a virtue these guys have in spades. They're content to lie in wait for something to cross their cross-hairs. Unless a job as a pin cushion sounds attractive, it's a good idea to avoid entering their line of sight.

MAGE
For men of a certain ilk, the secrets of the universe lie unravelled and exposed, the fold of reality is pulled back and powers of the deities is accessible. And what's the first thing you do when you get them? You torch some goddamn imps. Their enhanced awareness means they can see you even when you're not in their direct line of vision and will mercilessly pelt you with fireballs. (At the moment) The most dangerous foes you can come across.

MYEEEWZIKS:

This is the game's theme song composed by the lovely Sofie Kay. Seriously. Check her out.

SCREENSHAWTS:

VIDDEEEEOWWZ:

Here's an early gameplay demo. I decided a screenshot couldn't really depict the BLOODY SPLATTER DEATH properly, so here's this.
Video 2 featuring: Knight Enemy (Complete with patrol and slash) and Impy's hide ability.

*Asterisks mean that I'm not sure I want these powers in the game, or that they might be modified. I'm still developing and am open to ideas; if you can think of any abilities that would be cool, do tell me. More to come.

This actually sounds really unique and fun, I can't wait to try it out. I can imagine some amazing boss battles against RPG heroes. It'd be awesome to get to fight Cloud from FFVII as a boss, I've always wanted to knock him around  :D

This sounds way better than I originally thought it was going to be, no offense
I'd definitely enjoy playing around with it

As you play two piss-weak monsters, the game isn't combat oriented. Which isn't to say you can't kill anyone, you just have to be a little... creative. Boss battles are a possibility, but this would up the tempo of the game and make it difficult to play one player.

And thanks to everyone else for the kind words!

Added Mage Profile and a proposed new power for Orc: TOUGH SOLES. I feel like Impy deserves another power to balance it out, though. BUT MY MIND IS DRY. SUGGEST ME SOMETHING

Also, SCREENSHAAWTS:

Very bare, but just showing a weight-activated button and a door it connects to.

Testing out using gold coins as a collectable in-game. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

YOU SHAWL NOT PARS

Everything in screenshots may be subject to change. Again, any input is good. I'm open to ideas.

I like your graphics style
Alot
Also, what are you using to program this?
If your using GM, I might be able to help you with certain things

And my idea for a power for Impy: Light Footed
Add some platforms that break when you step onto them with Orc. However, they stay non-broken when you step onto them with Impy
Kinda cliche-ish...but it works

I'm using Games Factory, which is a bit different. I'm actually trying out Game Maker on and off, learning the ropes.

It's a good idea, but I think I might just remove Orc's Heavy power to balance the scales. See, it is kind of obsolete because if I want orc to press a button exclusively I can just stick some spikes under it. Hence the lack of weight button in the video.

Why use The Games Factory when you can use Multimedia fusion. which is the same program but better?

*Shrug* Habit I guess. I'm not used to MMF. Plus. It costs money.

However, tGF can be pretty buggy. I might just move the project into another program should things get out of hand.

Too little challenge.
You mean, to know what switch activates which door?
