What do they taste like, anyhow?

Generic citrus, probably, since I've tried it but can't remember how it tastes. The nifty shape is the real selling point, not the flavor.

Sort of. I've tried a lot, and I still believe the old standbys (oranges, bananas, pineapple, apples, etc.) are standbys for a reason.

I read a book once that tried to name the best food in the world via taste tests of obscure food that was rumored to be the best. They tried some of the stuff you'd expect -- filet mignon, black truffles -- as well as the three fruits that were named the best by some famed explorer. The fruits were the mangosteen, the durian, and the pineapple.

I'd be surprised if anyone's tried mangosteen since it's an illegal import in most places last I checked, but it's rumored to be extremely good. Pineapple probably doesn't sound like a contender for the best food ever to you guys, but I still say that a fresh, ripe pineapple (none of that canned stuff) is pretty damn amazing.

Mangosteen

http://www.streetdirectory.com/food_editorials/health_food/fruits/mangosteen_the_queen_of_fruits.html

From what that article says, this truly sounds like the greatest fruit in the world... I want it, but I may have to travel to Asia for it... Lousy US climates! *shakes fist*

Here is why it is illegal.

Quote
Because of governmental regulations, import of the fresh mangosteen fruit into the United States is illegal. Fears of introducing the devastating Asian fruit fly into the country have mainly kept the fruits themselves from crossing the borders, although occasionally one may find a mangosteen fruit on the shelves of a small Asian grocery store. And because mangosteen trees only grow in certain climates, attempts to cultivate the fruit within the country have yet to "fruitfully" succeed

I think I could have the courage to. I mean, I eat oysters which are pretty strong in smell and I can stand various pungent odors (except heavy body odor which I rank as the highest currently). I even at times drink apple cider vinegar, not in large amounts, it is very strong in taste and smell. I believe I could handle a smelly fruit if it has a nice taste. =D
I figure I could do it, too, although for a different reason. You see, my nose is basically broken. When I was young, I was so stuffy-nosed so often that I almost never got to use it. Well, eventually, we learned that I was allergic to a number of things that were pretty common in my house (like dust and smoke). I was about ten when I started taking medicine to help counter-act the constant barrage of allergens on my ultra-sensitive nose. Well, it seems like one of those "use it or lose it" situations, because now, I can rarely get enough air from breathing through my nose exclusively (it's been getting better over the years), and since I'm usually unable to breathe through my nose, I tend to not notice most smells.

Used to. Something about being a mouth breather made making friends ridiculously difficult, especially if I wanted friends who weren't social outcasts.

I'm past that now (thank God), but it's still annoying having to watch your breathing all the time.
