Has any part of you changed since you started RPG Maker?
« on: June 26, 2011, 07:58:24 AM »
If you don't know me, I used to frequent this forum a lot. Hi!

Now back to topic, I was going through the old Screenshot Topic looking for some old graphics I made and I noticed I was a total sissy in my posts. I was also a bit of a prick. Some posts were even making me lol -writing small essays, WRITING SCREAMING LETTERS a lot, that sort of stuff.

Are you a different person now than when you started using Charas/RPG Maker/teh internets? If so what are the events that led to said changes? Did you carry anything you learned here to the real world?

For me, the military made me a tougher person. The art skills I learned here did help me with becoming a singer/musician. (Anyone asking how I came to that switch, I only considered it once I found out I was really good. I even performed in London a couple of times. :)

-There probably is a similar topic to this already.

Let's see, considering I was 14 when I discovered RPG Maker. Yes, I've changed quite a lot.

RPG Maker did one really good thing for me. It motivated me to write a ridiculous amount of midis, most of which sucked and were experimental. But this experience has helped me so much with my own personal understanding of music.

Hey aboutaso!

In general I think RPG Maker and the internet changed me a bit, I started spriting more (now I've slacked off since I don't have huge amounts of free time) I started to draw more, and again have started to slack off due to life. But all in all I think the internet was a good thing it didn't change me much or influence me negatively so I consider many parts of it being good.

'Sup, bro. Anyway, I've changed more through age than through RPGM. Really, all it did was inflate my ego a little and fall apart when I realized how lazy I am. Ego inflation are permanent, though. Ask Duke.

It was all fun at the start. I joined like 2005. Great engine, great way to get something out of creativity. Came here for resources and programming advice. Stayed for the people and the opportunity to use my knowledge to help others. Games were made, then my large project died with the first computer crash. Then a virus ruined the next one and so on.

I learned that I need backups. I have those now.
I learned that starting with resources is a bad idea. I make stuff when I need them now.
I learned programming. It all makes a lot more sense now.
I learned that no matter how original your idea sounds - someone beat you to it. So I don't care about that now.

Art, well. I have my moments where I burn for a style, but my inability to stick with a style is still causing some problems. And that I don't bother sitting down drawing on orders or like once every day. It happens when I feel like it and the outcome is rarely good enough.

As a person. Well, in real life I'm a lot less of an arse these days. I think my kindness and helpfulness had a horrible impact on my personal life. People tend to tolerate me nowdays.
Still, my future will probably be a the future of a teacher. However much the government can screw over the school system during these years I have to study.

The moment that changed on how I acted was when I got the bitching of my life from Meiscool.  But I needed it.  He put me down to earth and I finally started see my noobness.  RPG Maker has certainly inspired me musically, but it also got me more into RPGs as a whole.  I didn't own any RPG games (Pokemon kinda counts but I'll make it an exception, meh) and now I enjoy them much more.  I also began to understand graphics better, and I got better at spriting (even though I still need to work at it more).

But yeah, welcome back to us about!

I started making rpg games on a nintendo emulator back in.. uhhh..   ???

I then got involved in that gerbal maker or some ****. I can't remember for the life of me what that damn thing was called but that was a pretty lame maker and very unfriendly to the user.  Then a miracle happened and Don Miguel translated Rpg Maker 95.  I got into that program and started making noob maps and noob monsters and actually created a game called Asilla which was my first rpg maker game. I hope some of you remember it, because it was a complete piece of **** hahaha. Yes, that was me!
The snowy asilla and horrible political humor.  Back in those days I didn't know jack or **** and a variable was like alien language to me.

Eventually you grow and become better through self teachings and explorations and finally you start to learn the complex stuff and master how to work with it. Creating your own DBS or little picture based screens that fool the eye into thinking there is some kind of new awesome sauce system this game was created on etc. Or you stick with basics and make those basics scream with originality and fun. There was one game which was sort of a joke I made that had a crappy ABS.  I didn't know what I was doing really.

Rpg Maker 2000 came out and than 2003 and boy let me tell you 2003 was..  :o HOLY ****ing ****  :o    It's got a final fantasy battle system!!!!!  I'm sure you all experienced that one lol.

Anyways, to make a long rpg maker story short I have learned it's probably better to leave some kind of simple legacy through art and game design. (even if it's just a hobby and for fun) than it is to never express or show the world what you're made of. I've gained a good deal of confidence in my abilities and in being a little more social through the internet and this website and especially rpg maker where not only do I create my own worlds but I can also show others work. (even if it's crappy) to people all around the world through my reviews.

Overall, I think I've learned a lot because of rpg maker and I've met a lot of nice friends.

You know, this thread got me inspired to try to make an RPG Maker game. Not an awesome game with custom everything as I'd want to, but I will give the good old RTP a try. It used to be fun, back in 2001, when my seven year old self downloaded RPG Maker for the first time and spent hours and hours playing around with all those awesome thingies. Maybe now I'll be able to use those awesome thingies a little better. :P

Right on! You're a good artist, dude. I think you should give it a shot. Hell, I made the original Aftermath and I sometimes see people talking about it even though it's a discontinued project. Little things like that really do make you feel good. Imagine if you made a game and people liked it and years later you heard people talking about your project? It's a very motivational experience. Most importantly have fun with your project if you decided to make one.

Custom menu, Cbs and other things people seem to be stuck on that eventually frustrates the hell out of them and they quit their project is completely unnecessary to create a good game.  Also, take pride in your work! That's the major thing a lot of designers don't do. If you don't have confidence in yourself it's a huge turn off (especially to ladies).

You should. Rmxp and vx sucks balls. Mostly the graphics and sound player bother me. I love rpgmaker's classic 16 bit feel.

VX isn't that bad. Give Aftermath VX a try when you can.  I am however looking forward to project Rpg Maker 20XX.   2003 greatly enhanced.

I've heard of 20XX. Looks promising. The capabilities of those programs are great. I saw someone code a mode 7 for the world map in VX. That's probably the coolest thing ever. Still, the graphics bother me for whatever reason.

In between 1999-2000 I was 23 y/o, and i met RPGMaker.
You know the story: I was so bad in creating sprites that i decided, just for fun, to try creating a sort of Character Generator.

Long story short, now doing online generators is my main job. So I'd really say Charas changed my life a "little bit"! :)

You know, then we should thank Don Miguel for RPGM itself, too!
But I know what really leaded me to RPGM, and so i know the very source of this all: it was CHRONO TRIGGER!!!!
I found about RPGM only beause i really felt in love with CT, and that was the first step for whatever happened later.

If history is to change, let it change. If the world is to be destroyed, so be it. If my fate is to die, I must simply laugh.
