Movin' on to higher ground!
« on: October 19, 2011, 12:01:10 AM »
Hello lovely people! I had a long, hard think about my life. I've decided that I hate biological sciences. Not because they're wrong
or boring, but because they're just too difficult and unrewarding. Every time I got back from a lecture at University, I'd run back and work on
Quasigen Island. Anyway, I've switched to Computer Science with Games Development. 3 weeks in and I'm already learning how to make
a basic platformer!! So excited!! There'll probably come a point where I commission people on here to do a few favours for me. Also,
if I get the resources and time to make Quasigen Island in XNA, I'll be sure to discuss payment or changing the graphics with anyone
who contributed to my project with artwork. Yeah, it's a tough one, but I know how tough games programming is! I'm so excited! :D

Oh, man, I thought you were going to say "I'm leaving Charas because life blah blah".

Well, glad you found something you actually like! Perhaps if I get some skills at something, I could contribute.
But chances are that I won't. But hey! Hey... hey... hello.
Hope all this goes well and better than your previous choice.

Welp, have luck in your new career choice!

Although upon seeing the topic title, I thought this would be about Zombines in England or something.

Good for you man, that's awesome. I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm very interested in biology, but I'm not sure I want to major in it. I'm fighting myself switching to game dev focused classes or music.

I think it's good that you're going for something that appeals to you more. People who goes on with educations that aren't really their thing don't really feel any satisfaction. It's more of a duty in the end.

Got a friend who spent 2 years studying something he didn't really burn for as much as he thought and ended up quitting.

Its always nice to go for what you love.  I'm in my second year of Music Ed and the only thing I can't stand is the general education classes.  If it was just all music and teaching class I'd have a 4.0 >.>

I'm not actually going for a job in the field. Apparently the game development side is so difficult that
it acts as a credential into any area of software engineering. The game developing will be done as an indie
project in my own time! :D

If you're having doubts, drenrin, then switch. I wasted a year, but I'm better off for it, and it's better than
wasting the rest of my life. Biology is fascinating and difficult, but the lab practicals are just dire and
unrewarding. I couldn't be stuck in that environment for the rest of my life!

Clever girl. It's really a bitch of an industry to get into, but if it's going to help you out in other areas on top of just being enjoyable for you, then it's a good way to go.

I'd think actually getting pay would make them more rewarding :P

Good choice in your career! As long as you have a computer science certificate you should be able to find a job pretty easily.

When it comes to graphical programming, it is really hard to get a job in game design or special effects in movies/shows; however, there is a high demand for graphical programmers in most other areas like simulations in medical biology. If you ever wanted to work for an actual game company, I would recommend starting off in one of the other graphical areas, make some indie games, and then switch over.

I know XNA is simplified and all, but if you get a chance, I recommend working with the new version of openGL. You learn very quickly about everything that goes on in the background, especially when you program your own shaders. It essentially forces you to create everything on your own because there is no built in lighting, no built in model view or projection matrix, no shaders, etc., but once you do all of this on your own, you'll understand graphical programming and the graphics pipeline much better. Then when you go back to something like XNA, everything will make more sense, and you'll be able to do all sorts of neat tricks :)

Anyway, good luck!

It's pretty sweet! Gone from zero programming experience to making an XNA fighting game in 5 weeks. This is the course for me
clearly! :D

I'll post some game screenies up soon. I wanna get this bad boy on Steam!
