Kim Jong-il
« on: December 19, 2011, 04:50:04 AM »
He's dead, according to North Korea.
His son, who is apparently "exactly like his father" is heir apparent.

Personally, I was...erm, relieved, happy, something along those lines until I read that quote about "exactly like his father".
Meaning the poor kid is brainwashed etc.

So...discuss?

Yeah, pretty weird.
I mean, first bin Laden, and now Jong-il.
Good year?

I hope he won't be worse than Jong-il was.

This. I'm stationed in Korea right now, and I really don't want anything to go down. (I'm almost at the six month mark. ^_^

What's next? Is Fidel still alive?

This is going to be an interesting one. Kim Jong-il wasn't much of a danger; he was certainly a tyrant who starved his own people, but he wasn't exactly out for blood 24/7. The general opinion was that he exaggerated his claims of military power and nuclear stock.

Kim Jong-un is completely untested as a leader, he's going to have a lot of leaders from a lot of countries that don't get along with North Korea saying he's not respected and unfit to rule, and he's got full control of a lot of powerful toys that would make them reconsider. It's going to be one to watch.

Yup!
Judging from the first paragraph in Wikipedia, though, he's no longer in any position of power.

But yeah.
Agreeing with Drag. It's going to be pretty interesting.

Yeah, been like that from a while now. His brother took over after he got sick.
"A while" meaning "this year".
:V
He stepped down as First Secretary, apparently the head of the political party, in April.

There's been speculation that there may be internal turmoil in North Korea. Kim Jong-il was the "great leader". Now his young son is taking over. To assert his power, and get the people to follow him, he may try to attack South Korea, which would just be ugly.

Most likely nothing is going to change. North Korea is working pretty well as a country and I doubt that people will try to revolt or anything, it will just continue being what it is.
