So, Soul calibur V is out
« on: February 28, 2012, 08:02:40 PM »
And I got it. Anyone else got it yet?

I'm surprised about the direction the series is heading this time. The guard impacts are more or less gone, no more timing that guard button with the direction button... I loved those impact duels.
Anyway, I've always liked soul calibur for being a fighting game that you can actually play by yourself because of all the stuff in the games. Soul calibur 3 had that tales of sword mode, the story mode with many different paths to take and challenges. Soul calibur 4 had the story mode(which actually kinda sucked), the tower of souls with difficult fights and one that was survival mode.
But this time the story mode consists of 20 episodes. Each one either involves a 3 round fight against an enemy or 1 round fights against 3 enemies. Each episode is started and ended by drawn pictures that tell the story of Protokolos and his sister Pyrrha. And after those 20 episodes there's just arcade left.
Speaking of the story mode, a lot of characters don't even get any space. For example - Mitsurugi, Cervantes, Aeon, Raphael and Yoshimitsu aren't seen or mentioned. Some of the characters only appear as encounters as well.
So the classic storyline mode where you pick a character and play through their story is gone. I don't have a clue why Cervantes is still alive and even look younger than usual.

This game is all about the player level while the previous games had some sort of currency thing going on. For each won battle or mode you gain some exp, and when you've got enough exp you gain a new level. And on each level you unlock an online title or some equipment, maybe even a character. Which I'm not really into. I prefered when I could spend the money on what I wanted. And this time I don't even know what I could get.
And speaking of the equipment, I wasn't a big fan of the whole "armour gives stats" that SCIV had, I prefered SC2 and 3 where the weapon decided what bonuses you'd get. But in this game, there are no bonuses. Everything you choose your character (beside fighting style) seem only to affect your looks.

Bottomline, I'm a bit disappointed. But they said that they were going for a new direction. The customization is all flashy, but there's not enough stuff to start with to make it that special. I liked tekken for pure fighting and SC for the adventure.

PS. I customized my character to have an arrow in his knee.

Ha.

Only Soul Calibur I played was...I think 2, on the Dreamcast.
It rocked.
Never really got interested in the others.

Dreamcast? Had to be the first Soul Calibur (and we're going to ignore the first first game, but that's to keep it simple).

I've only played Soul Calibur 2 and 4 and I liked them. I thought about getting the 5th, but I'm uncertain.
Kinda sucks that you can only get Dampierre with the collector's edition, though, even if it's only $10 more.
But that's $10 more for a single character because I actually like the guy, but I don,t give a crap about the rest that comes with the collector's edition.

I'll see if I'll ever get this one... but what you're telling right now seems disappointing.

According to them namco people he's gonna be a dlc. But it might take some time before he's released. That special preorder from bestbuy (or whatever it was) is just supposed to give you the guy earlier than everyone else.

It's out now? I had bought it weeks ago.

anyway, it's crap, and the sad thing is that gamers nowadays support that kind of thing. You want more offline single player content and they are all like "THERE IS ONLINE STOP COMPLAINING YOU DON'T HAVE ANY FRIENDS LEAVE THE POOR BEAVERS ALONE WILL YA GEEZ YOU'RE A CREEP, GO AWAY, WE WERE HAVING A GOOD TIME UNTIL YOU SHOWED UP GRANDY UGHHHHH GO PLAY AN RPG, WITH LEVELS OR SOMETHING, BECAUSE I'LL TELL YOU SOMETHING, THIS IS A HAPPY GAME"

Also "Protokolos", i see wat u did dere

I friggin hate nightmare. He's like the Golbez of soul calibur V. Far too fast for his own good. Just can't seem to read him or get a hit before he does. Many times have I failed hardmode because of him.

After completing the "story mode". There is basically just arcade, quick combat and that super-hard arcade. And I just keep getting less and less points for winning. I wonder how I'm supposed to get to lvl 50.

Also, is there any way to get more weapons for the characters? I'm kinda bored with the 5 you start with. Also, I just now realised that both Kilik and Elysium are random style characters. So that fight at the end of the story was in fact against Pyrrha Omega. Go figure

PS. What characters should I go for? Since I'm having some trouble with the better AI I'm kinda thinking that Aeon and Deviljin might not be the best choices.

So I've heard Taki, Cassandra and Sophitia are all gone... is that actually true?
Because these are characters that I actually liked. Having 3 taken away kinda sucks...

Edit: Wow, okay, I checked at the character list and they removed so many characters that I'm already losing interest.

All 3 mentioned above, Talim, Xianghua, Seong Mina, Amy, Setsuka, Zasalamel... sure, some have "clones" but still.

I don't think I'll buy this game. Too much stuff and characters removed.

Damn, you. I wanted to make a thread of this. I mean, I even enter tournaments.

Oh, definitely go with Devil Jin. I mean, it's really really different.
Elysium has different stats than Pyrrha, and also a different special, which really mixes things up.
The thing is, Pyrrha Omega is just as borked and and derp as Cassandra. Way too fast for her damage output.

I'm going to an anime convention next month, and entering a SC5 Tournament there. I've been practicing my juggle combos with Devil Jin a lot.

I like the new sidestep feature, and just guards, and impact edges are more skill based, requiring critical gauge to do an impact guard.
The combat itself all around is well rounded. Cervantes got nerfed to hell and back when it comes to teleports, but they realized the reason everyone spammed teleports with cervantes is because he was slow as hell and had a terrible 8way run game.
He has more low hits, and 8way run options in this new one. Gave him a quick + shaped slash. A.B

Overall.
I'm using Devil Jin for his v v K.K. (~fly)
Followed by the down lazer. 3 of those in a row = instawin.

Taki is replaced, and better. Cassandra and Sophie have been shoved into Phyya and Pyrra omega.  Xina got cloned, Kilik got cloned and changed.
I still like it.
patroklos is cool, Aeon is cool, Devil Jin is cool. Z.W.E.I is kinda terrible. Nevermind, really terrible. Viola is really cool. Algol is back, Dampierre is not well known, but he actually kicks ***. A patroklos is impossible to use as good as the computer uses him.
Ezio is fun, but simple.

Dampierre is fun, I liked on on the PSP. Wasn't good with him, but still liked. But losing 9 characters to replace them with clones... meh.
That and removing story mode for each characters. I don't know... maybe I'll try it, but I won't buy it until I'm sure all the loss don't make the game bad.

It's mainly fun if you enjoy creation, and online combat. I seriously hope they somehow make storyline DLC or something. Just like UMvC had the Herald and Heroes DLC.
I'll buy any sort of DLC involving extra story.
