Common even? Interesting, where else may I encounter this glorious idea? And I suppose that FF7 doesn't count seeing how magic was involved.
There's an indie game that just got kickstarter'd that's basically that.
It's some sort of RTS with planetoids that you can launch towards/capture/use as weapons.
...i can't remember the name, though, other than it's by some people quite famous in the RTS industry.

I used to be scared to death of those movies when I was a small boy.

It shouldn't be too hard to weapon-ize meteors: The same tech that makes it possible to move them out of the way can be used to do the opposite.

Is it worth it though, or would it turn out to be more cost effective to just send a bomb?

I liked what dead space did with space mining where they sent mining ships into space to haul in asteroids and mine them for minerals and such. Of course, they even had planet crackers where they tore entire planets apart and mined them but still.

PS: apparently the thing that struck is in fact a meteorite and not a meteors a friend rudely pointed out. Meteors are stuff that don't reach the surface, meteorites are stuff that creates an impact. Comets are stuff travelling around a star and asteroids are solid forms of mass rather than ice.

The subject was brought up and he was part of the conversation, people talked about it and he freaked out.
It was that kind of "OH MY GOD WHATS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??! ITS NOT A METEOOOR, ITS A ****ing METEORITE! METEORS DONT REACH EARTH THEY ARE JUST SHINY STARFALLS! THIS THING STRUCK DOWN AND RUINED THE LIVES OF PEOPLE AND IS THEREFORE A METEO-RITE."

To which I answered: "uh... what?"

He's had a hard time of it. His father was an abusive meteorologist.

"What speed would a 1 meter meteor have to be travelling to break free of the moon's gravitational pull passing three kilometers from its surface, son?"

"What, daddy?"

"Do you want me to get the belt, son?"

"No father nooo!"
