Dragon World
« on: December 02, 2004, 01:14:35 AM »
Go to the following link and click the part where it says "click here to download.

http://www.angelfire.com/dragon2/world2
I'm sorry that you have to go to a differant page to download it, I know it always upsets me when someone is too lazy to put the actuall download link on the site, but angelfire won't let me remote link anything or they'll delete my site...

I wasn't going to say anything about this project till it was done, but I am in need of beta testers, so I guess it will be allright if I released a demo  :).

First off, let me just say that this game was made for an event at a site I go to. The guidelines were to just make a game of a world that reflects you, or something like that. Well one thing led to another, and this is what I got.

Background info: You are one of four "dragon sword masters" (I'll just say DSM for short). They're basically just what the tiltle sugests, dragons who fight with swords. The swords they use are forged by there very soul, and thus they are connected to it forever, even after death. These swords are known simply as "soulblades".

Story: Seven years ago, a dark dragon known as Zersevick (who is actually yellow), leads the DSMs into a forest to attack a group of humans, for no other reasons than just because he thinks they are inferior. Even though you don't think its right, you follow blindly, untill at last you can't take it anymore. You stand against Zersevick and the other two DSMs, and it leads to a battle. You fight your hardest but alas left lying on the ground in a pile of blood uncouncious.

You wake up a few days later to find your sword is gone, and thus your spirit is gone as well. Giving up on life you return to your home hoping to be executed, but instead your made to fight. The massicre didn't go to well with the humans, and needless to say it led to war.

Now seven years later you're on a mission to take a near by town. Will the sight of innocent blood spilt recindle your feeling for standing up against the DSMs once again? But even if you do, will the humans even exept your help? Join DragonBlaze on his quest to find his place in the world, and his journy to regain his soul.

Gameplay: Instead of the traditional leveling up system, you level up by gaining followers. There are many ways to do this, for some people, all you have to do is talk to them, and for others you have to go on various quests from a tug-o-war match, to rebuilding a city. Since there is no reason to go out and battle (cuz you cant level up this way) there will not be any random battles, instead the game will be full of mini-games, side-quests, and other fun stuff to keep it interesting.

Throughout most of the game your free to do what you want. Its up to you on how you want to restore the city, gain followers, and everything else. But the game won't be entirely without structure, you will have a set path to follow for the first 30 - 60 minutes. This area is basically just introductions, and developement.

The game isn't designed to be that long, its probably only going to be 2 - 6 hours (depending on whether you go on side missions and stuff). But that advantage of that is that I'll have the full game done somewhere around christmas :D

Oh and there will be lots of features like a CBS, world map display, special message boxes (you'll see in the screens), many poses for characters, lots of custom gfx, and a bunch of other stuff that I want to keep a surprise :D

Characters:

DragonBlaze -  http://1.forumer.com/uploads/xeterous/post-27-1101172672.png

Soul Element - Fire. DragonBlaze is only a nickname that your character goes by. After he lost his soulblade, he felt as though he died, and cast off his real name. Besides loosing his blade in that battle, he also lost his wings, and lost most of his power, which makes things a lot more difficult for him thoughout the game. At the begining of the game, you don't know much about him, but as the game progresses, you unviel many secrets.

Zersevick -  http://olls.impressur.com/forum/viewthread.php?action=attachment&tid=334&pid=6633

Soul Element - Darkness. Even though he is yellow, he is refered to as the dark dragon. Reason being is his soul element that is reflected through his sword. He believes that dragons are superiour to humans and is determained to kill or enslave them all. His other motives are unknown at the time. And simply by being the leader of the DMSs, the Keckshio and Valere (the other two DMSs) follow him blindly like DragonBlaze used to.

TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO TEST THIS GAME: If you want to test this game, pleast let me know. I have a demo made, but I don't have time to upload it right now (dial up connection). This demo is only around 20 minutes long, basically because I don't want to get to the part were you are able to go off and do your own thing. Even though its a big part of the game, it won't be good for a demo untill the whole part is done. And remember, if you sign up as a beta tester, I expect you to give me feedback, I had a few other people say they would test this game, but then when I gave them an earlier demo, they never really talked to me again  :|

And finally, a few screenies :D

 http://1.forumer.com/uploads/xeterous/post-27-1099531845.png
Title screen

 http://1.forumer.com/uploads/xeterous/post-27-1099532022.png
This image shows the message system I use. When the message is done in quickly scrolls out of the screen to the left :)

 http://1.forumer.com/uploads/xeterous/post-27-1099531906.png
World map. When you come to a location where you can enter, the name box scrolls in from the top, and the enter one scrolls in from the left. (if you leave they scroll out of the screen). The world map display is alwasy up on the world map, and there are things flying overhead (birds and other "things")

Yeah umm, e-mail. That won't work, my game is just under 20 megs, and my e-mail only allows sending files 5 megs or under. Plus it would take me just as long to send it to you as it would to upload it to my server (which would take around two hours). I'll just upload it tonight or tomarrow and give anyone who wants to beta test it the link for the dl. Then if the beta testers don't find many bugs, I'll put the link up for everyone to download.  :)

Well this game was suppose to be top secret untill I was completely done with it, but my previous beta testers never got around to telling me what they thought of it. I only have the first 30 minutes of gameplay included, and the last little scene is a tad differant for this demo because the one in the full game would have a big spoiler in it that I don't want anyone to see just yet.

And Yay thanks for the coment! I'm uploading the demo right now. I wanted to have it done a little earlier, but my brother was being a Jackass about letting me go on the internet...

I played it a while back, because somebody asked you for a couple of resources, and you put up a little demo thing, and I played as far as my comp would allow, which was until it said "could not find (some file)"

IT WAS SWEET DUDE!!

Thanks for the comment! If I recal correctly the first error happened right before you entered the city. Let me just say that it gets a ton better once the attack begins in the town  :D

he missing files were sound files. My rtp is a differant version than most peoples, so if I have rtp gfx or music in my game, it will cause an error. Usually I don't use any rtp at all, but since this is just a quick thing I'm doing, I have a few rtp sound effects and battle animations (only a few, and I don't use the defult sequences)

That demo was for my original testers, since then I added a new little quest in the begining that explains a little more about whats going on. It also has some action which the begining of my game lacked in the first demo.

Robotam just played the game and this is what I thought of it:

In the beginning I was very amazed, I L - O - V - E - D the part when you were to fix that bridge. You even had graphics to that pose when he held those woods, that's awesome.
But I started to dislike it alittle when you got to the Megatown, that was an extreemly boring part it felt very empty.
And maybe there was aittle to much blood in it, I think a RPG shouldn't have much blood in it, it destroyes the RPG feeling completly. And I didn't like the battles at all, I thought the battle chara and the monsters was too big. I'd made me feel like that there were no fighting arena at all. I'm sorry but it felt very boring in those battles. But the character Dragonblaze is a very interesting character, I really liked him, and the battle animations made me very amazed. They came exactly when they should  have. I couldn't do it better myself!
And the storyline was okay I guess, I kind of liked it.
And oh I almost forgot, the mapmaking was very good too.
Over all it was a pretty good game, but the first 5-10 minutes was much better than the rest.
Well I guess that's all. Good luck with the game in the future and I will check out that Silverfire game I think it was called. :D

Sorry about that, angelfire deleted my site  :(
I've been using it for the past two years now as a host for my games, so now I gotta find a new one. So untill I get it re-uploaded somewhere, I guess you cant play it, sorry.

EDIT: Allright I'm uploading it on a friends server, with any luck I'll have the demo back up within two hours

Allright, I'll try to add some stuff in there to make it more entertaining

I'll probably add an option before the game starts in the final version for how much blood there will be. I got critisized a lot two years ago when I made a game for when I had people just dissapear instead of actually die. So yeah I'll make an option so the player can decide weather or not they want to see any blood.

Yeah I agree, that was a battle system I made around two years ago (for the same game that I got critisized for not having blood   :) ). It was the first CBS I ever made, and well as you can see it wasn't too good. I'll probably put in my CBS from SilverFire which is a lot better, or I have an idea for a cool battle system that will be a lot like an ABS.

And the storyline was okay I guess, I kind of liked it.

Since the game won't be too long, I don't have much time to develope the story like I would in a normal game, but since its only a small side project I'm working on, I'm trying to concentrate more on the more gameplay than on the story.

And thanks alot for all your positive comments as well!

Awesome I must say. But it makes me wonder how will we have other party members in battle if we will at all. But besides that I was just amazing. Its very good and I agree with Robo, Megatown got a bit dull but I can't wait until its finishing up a bit.

Oh and the one thing I saw extremely wrong was when the gaurds were being killed in the assualt the town people would just walk around doing their own thing like its no big deal and no reaction at all. So I just thought you might wanna change that a bit.

To download, click on the following link and click on the link that says "click here to downlad"

I'm sorry that I can't put the link to the actuall download here, but angelfire will delete my site if I have any remote links. So this way it should stay up...

The current battle system only supports one player, one enemy, 3 items, 2 spells, no critical hits or misses, and no elemental weaknesess. So I'm pretty sure I'm gonna make a differant battle system for this game. The two I have in mind will only support one person battling at a time, but it will also support character switching mid battle, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll keep the rest of the info on the cbs a secret untill its completely done.

I may fix that in the full version, but it would take a ton of work to get the timings done and all. If this wasn't just a side mini-project I wouldn't mind spending the time to do that. I'm kinda anxious to finish this project up so I can get back to my SilverFire game, I'm not gonna rush anything, cuz thats easily noticable, and it ruins the entire game if its rushed, but I won't spend as much time on certain scenes as I would in SilverFire.

Thanks for your comments  :)
