In Regards To Illegal Downloads
« on: December 05, 2004, 04:32:54 AM »
Downloading music for free is illegal. So is downloading ROMS. And RPG Maker, for that matter. And although I'm sure that no one on this forum has done any of the three, I was just wondering how exactly anyone could be caught. Does anybody know how the FBI or whatever deals with this can find out?

PS: I don't think this topic is illegal because I'm not asking for links to download these things, nor am I asking for aid in taking part in these activities. Of course, if a moderator or administrator objects, I will remove it as soon as possible.

Large file sharing networks like Kazaa can be monitored by anyone with the program. The government has agents, similar to the ones that patrol popular chatrooms for pedofiles, monitoring these networks. The thing is, there are so many people using these that only a small amount can be caught at a time.

As for ROMs, they simply find a site, find if they can succesfully download a commercial rom, and bust the site. Contrary to popular belief, the "delete in 24 hours" law is totally false, as is the "owning a cartridge" line. Any commercial ROM, no matter what the circumstances, is illegal.

But ROMs are so easy to find because they don't actively search for ROM sites. Many people think that downloading ROMs takes money away from the devolopers, but that is a lie. The gaming industry sees barely, if any, profit loss from ROMs. The fact is, the consoles that are emulated are either outdated, or have the benefit of being portable, which doesn't come with downloading ROMs on a computer. ISOs are big files and usually aren't hosted. So they aren't as big of a deal.

Lastly, unless Enterbrain goes on a rampage against translated and illegal RPG Maker downloads, not too many sites are going to be busted. But it's the same deal - see if they can download, find if it's illegal, and go after the site.

government spyware i guess or site download records

dot worry though they give you a 24 hour warning to remove all illigal material from your computer, enough time to save it to disc lol

i know this because they emailed my cousin and told her she had 24 hours to delete everything and she got locked out so she was soooo worried but she somehow got it through her window to delete everything. she had 730some songs

Ok, thanks. That was one of those things that I've been wondering about for quite a while, but never remembered to ask about. Now I'll regain the 37.316 seconds of sleep I've lost. And by the way, Revolution, are you referring to my style, or Mr. Gangsta Chicken's post above you? If you were talking about me, then thank you. If not, then... well, okay, whatever, have a nice day.

It was probably a hoax email. When the government emails you about having illegal software, it's to tell you that you're going down. Think those kids that got sued got a warning email?

I don't think the FBI e-mails or something but oh well...

Also some Yahoo.com's cookies have for name F, B, and I. Is quiet strange and leaves you wondering whata heck.

Also below is a fake e-mail. When I read this, I thought "OK?" Because it had a virus attached o.o XD

I heard from a reliable voice that the FBi would send you a letter instead of an e-mail. Cuz..."hello!" an e-mail can accessed from anywhere.

So yeah read the fakey below!

Oh yes! This is probably about a year old!

But come on people, think about it. We all know the main sites for roms  Supr, paradise, center and others...if we know of them, then they do. SO why haven't they done anything? BEcause they can't. Simple as that. But after New years Eve....alot of ppl will be busted.

They say Kazaa is "watched" it's not. They just put out an *** load of fake files and that's it. The truth is. they can't do nothing alll they can do is shut down the site and nothg more. lol they could do more but it seem they don't care...maybe they're geting moives and such too..

Wow, you sound like one of those conspiracy freaks(no offense). And we don't all know the main sites for ROMs. I just google for them, as do most other people. Reread my post and you'll see the reason why they don't go after ROM sites. But they can bust them if they want to. I don't know why you think they can't, or where thise new years eve crap came from.

And Kazaa is watched, and they find people. A LOT of people were sued a while back, if you remember. The publicity died down a bit, though, but they still patrol Kazaa and other networks. Don't underestimate the man, let them underestimate you.

i dont know much about this except that i download songs, roms and i own RM2K and RM2K3 and that alot of you frends from school think downloading songs IS legal. so what ever the goverment is doing i think it should achauly say that it is illega cus that would put alot of kids off and that if i got a e-mail from the "FBI" i wouldent give a dam cus i could just download it again, and if my site got shutdown i would just make another one one ripway with a new e-mail addy, so yeh the goverment and the FBI cant realy do much without people countering them

There's a whole community of Rm2k fans, so shutting that down would be almost impossible. Same with MP3s and such.
