Basic Map Outline
« on: May 30, 2005, 08:08:48 PM »
Map do's and dont's

1. Choose what kind of map you want to make (Ex. Town, Inside,
Ranch, Beach, Camp or anything else)

2. Once chosen you have to find the proper chipset. You usually can't find what you are looking for and there is little you can do to make your own. There is a way to edit. When you find a chipset resmebling what you want upload it onto paint, ultimate paint, idraw or whatever other editing program you use. For example say you want a goldmine but can't find it.... Well a soluton look for say a coal mine and just edit it with shading and such so that you can make gold instead of coal. This is only the beginning to mking your map.

3. I call them detail slots, detail slots in my opinion are slots on your chipset that have say a clock or a flower. A good idea is when you find a map that you like just transfer a detail slot from another map through copy paste. Details are what make a map. Shading also helps alot, hwen on your favorite program go ahead and use an shading and add it on to the chipset, this way you can put shading in the corners and make your map look realistic.

4. Never make 2 of the same map. When you create all the houses in the town exactly the same people quickly lose intrest. You want to give a differnt feel of the people in each map and make it your origonal piece.

5. Always make sure you have a moving object on your map. Such for example on an outside map besides people make sure you have a well with water or a stream through the town to give it the enviorment feel. On the inside it is a good idea to tweak the light system. Use a moving fire syst. and make a fireplace if you are making fnasty medievial. Candles and lamps also are great, give it a wavy feeling that looks like the light is radiating off.

6. Map building when you are building your map say a town make sure that the outside matches the general inside because when there is a mansion on the inside and a shack on the outside it tends to confuse people  . On the inside you want to make the walls and try and make it resmeble the apperance of the outside. Especially if you are using a glide syst. Glide syst is when you walk into a house in say a castle setting and you can see another house. (Ex. make a large map and when you usem teleport system so when you walk into the house you can see the other house.) So try and match the outlook of the house and the inside. Make windows on the inside where hey are on the outside... Its the little stuff that counts!

7. Last but not least in your town settings! Choose the type of town you want(Ex. Bustling city, Quiet town, average medium) Before you create a City map you want to have this chosen. For bustling citys you want fast moving citizens doing somthing and choose mucis to match the enviorment. Quiet you want them going slower and on a contious it gives that feeling like you have all the time in the world!

These are the map outlines!

All and all it's good. Nice job. This should help newer map makers. :)

Unless of course, the king of the town wants everything to be perfect, and all the houses are built the same way, so that nobody can be jealous of eachother, and the only thing that differs is tiny things such as clocks or where something is. :p

It's fine. I think your next step should be to post pics to pose as examples. Why? Well, people learn differently and learning visually is a godo thing, especially with RPG Maker maps.
