The first one was translated into English, but it wasn't released. Maybe it'll be on VC some day, but that's it.

Wasn't the GBA compilation of the first two released in English?

Also I'm pretty sure there would have been at least a slight profit margin in it for them if they finished MML3, it was hardly looking like a big budget blockbuster after all, and the fanbase has only grown since the original games.

Wikipedia that ****.  Only Mother 2 was released in the US, as Earthbound in 1995 for the SNES.

Earthbound was very "love it or hate it." And I understand people that hate it. The graphics are completely awful, from the battle system to the interface menus. And it's actually really, really hard. Simple encounters with normal enemies at certain points just totally destroy your party, and boss battles turn into spamming ice and rockets before you get hit with some horrible move that one-hit KOs you, disables you, or otherwise wipes you out.

I ultimately enjoyed the experience for the story, the music, and the strange sense of humor. But I would have made a considerably different game if I was in charge of Earthbound, and I have no interest in playing any of the others in the series.

For me, the battle system was a big deterrent. I also wasn't fond of the music (don't care what anyone says, I found it annoying).

Main reason why I didn't play Earthbound is because I hated the battle system.
Couldn't stand it at all.

I'm pretty much at the point where respect points are worthless. I could lose them all over the place, and still have more than I know what to do with. They're worth less to me than Boondollars.

Earthbound's battle system and graphics were pretty awful. Mother 3 improved massively on those two aspects (well, not massively with the battle system but I find it a lot more engaging due to the rolling HP counters and combo system)

Yeah, earthbound is a really special game. Grinding is the way I went with them though.
